CSX M426 approaches the crossing at Still River Depot in Harvard on a harsh but somewhat warm mid-February afternoon in 2023. Leading the way towards Ayer and eventually Maine would be CSXT 467, a GE CW44AC equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory. Winter 2022-2023 was mostly snowless in southern New England, meaning that everything was gray and dead from November to mid-April. I was getting pretty sick of it by this point, and the absolutely awful lighting for this shot only added to that.

On June 23rd, 2022, I made my way up to District 3 to see two things: ST LGT with a pair of BNSF GEs and NS 23K with an SD60E leading 2 UP GEs. The first find of the day was the second half of LGT tied down at OX in Fitchburg. On the head end was BNSF 8029, one of many GE ES44C4s on BNSF's roster. Since MBTA uses ACSES PTC, 8029 would not be able to lead the final miles from here to Ardent Mills in Ayer, and would be capped by a Pan Am dash 8 later that week. But while it was by itself along with the other GE behind it, I got some BNSF nose shots in New England.
CSX M427 crawls down the Worcester main towards Still River Depot on a chilly mid-January afternoon in 2022. Serving as the leader on the five-unit lashup was CSXT 465, a GE CW44AC equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory.
CSX M427 rounds the corner onto the east leg of Ayer wye on a hot and hazy late-May morning in 2023. Leading the way into the yard with the cut of cars to be left here was CSXT 8872, an EMD SD40-2 equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory. They separated the Ayer cars from the rest of their train in Graniteville and would run lite back east to grab their train afterwards.
ST NA-1 heads west through CPF-297 in Wamesit with a cut of cars bound for Nashua. MEC 501, a GMD GP40-2LW, was the Nashua unit at the time and would lead the consist long hood forward back towards New Hampshire. I don't know where they got these cars since 501 can't go to Lawrence on account of no ACSES PTC, so whatever this operation was will continue to confuse me.
Norfolk Southern’s Geometry Train made a run over Pan Am Southern in mid-August 2021 and I made a quick visit to Ayer to see it. Before reaching MBTA territory, MEC 7594 was added to the head end since it’s equipped with ACSES PTC to run over MBTA territory. I would wind up getting this shot at the Ayer MBTA station, and while it’s not my best framing by a long shot, I’ve got to be content with it.
Norfolk Southern 265 departs Ayer and rolls by trash cars at CPF-Camp on a sunny early-May morning in 2023. Leading the way as far as Binghamton, New York was NS 6958, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA trackage. I would wind up chasing this train all the way to East Deerfield getting a mix of decent and awful images.
Norfolk Southern 265 comes off the west leg of Ayer wye at Moore's after assembling their westbound train in the yard. Serving as leader for the elephant-style lashup was NS 6964, an EMD SD60E equipped with ACSES PTC to lead over MBTA territory between here and Westminster. I would wind up chasing this train all the way to Gardner where it would meet 16R.
