Across coastal Algarve towns and much of Portugal, the beauty of historic architecture hides a sobering reality: a surplus of abandoned homes. Rising real estate costs make purchasing these properties inaccessible for locals and new buyers alike. Further complicating matters, strict renovation guarantees required by the government add a significant financial burden to restore properties to habitable conditions, dissuading potential investors.
The situation leads to many historic homes falling further into disrepair, trapped between heritage preservation laws and economic impracticalities. Addressing this issue may require incentivized restoration programs or subsidies to encourage sustainable housing solutions that preserve cultural legacies while addressing housing shortages.
When I looked across the desert at the mountains, I liked the contrast of colors on the very clear blue sky, red rocks, and green-gold ground cover. The late afternoon sun was making everything glow with a hint of gold.
The La Sal Mountains run along the border of Utah and Colorado. The tallest peak is Mount Peale, reaching 12,721 feet (3,877 m). The name of the range dates to Spanish times, when the Sierra La Sal (meaning the "Salt Mountains") was a prominent landmark on the Old Spanish Trail between Santa Fe and Los Angeles.

I first saw this scene as I was walking Cook's Meadow without my camera. I liked the way the shadows darkened the foreground and let my eye move easily across the view to the far granite walls. I noted the time and returned the next morning at the same time. I was lucky to also find some clearing clouds to add to the scene.

A section of my village has been cut off by a major road built in the 1950s. This is one of the houses beyond that road, sitting much deeper in the flood plain of the River Ver. It is actually a gatehouse, guarding one of the entrances to Markyate Cell (Hertfordshire), an Elizabethan mansion - also cut off from the village. Samyang mirror-reflex lens fixed at F6.3.

Looking out across the wide trough of Coverdale to Great haw on Carle fell from Melmerby moor..a proper winters day up there today...about time too.
Dawn light sweeps across a prairie dog town as a small group of Mule Deer does and fawns crosses the open ground. The rut was on, but for some reason none of the big bucks had rounded them up. It was a little disappointing, because I was out there looking for photo ops showing such interactions. On the other hand, I couldn't complain about the light!
The Mule Deer rut is the last "big wildlife event" of the year. Things will be pretty quiet until the migratory birds begin returning next March. Nevertheless, random encounters can happen, and I can always find other photo ops: landscapes, close ups, indications of weather. Really, what I photograph is life.
Besides, I love winter light on the northern prairie. The sun's shallow arc keeps the light warm even at midday. In August, it's all over by about 10 a.m. if not earlier; during winter months, the light is good all day long. The rest is up to us photographers.
