Due to ACL...

With the bedroom on the second floor, 19 steps up, the plan all along was for me to spent the next few weeks with her inthe living room near her. From day one she has always insisted on staying "near" so naturally besides spending many a night at my side here at the computer while I beat on hibbies or watch the Pats try to make it to another Superbowl while she chews a rawhide on the couch she also spent every night near the bed-on the second floor. Her first day back she looks beat and spent most of the day resting while an ocassional drink and a light supper. In her condition I thought I could spend perhaps one more night in a nice warm bed while she sleeps in the kitchen, on her bed, with Tobie (her bud) and a nice bowl of water by her side.

The first problem arose when she drank, and drank, and drank throughout the day and her refusal to go to the bathroom outside. Her usual spot to "go" is approx. 50 yards behind the house, into the edge of the woods. In her condition I thought for sure she wasn't able to make it so the day was spent trying to get her to go a few yards outside the door on a nice spot of green grass as NH has yet to see winter yet. Her gimping on three legs assured me she couldn't make it to her usual spot and the day went with her showing signs she had to go yet her refusal to show an interest while outside. That only solified my thought that it would be best for her to stay in the carpetless kitchen for her first evening home. To be sure she would stay in ther kitchen a few precautions were made, a child's gate was put up to keep her in the kitchen and another was put at the bottom of the stairs just in case she made it through the first defense, after all this works for the cocker spaniel, and to be extra sure she would show no interest in making the journey upstairs two baskets of clean laundry was put in front of the child gate in the kitchen to make is seem impossible to get through. Off to bed I go after seeing her starting to dose off on her bed.

Fast forward to 6:30 am, I awake to sounds of a dog panting near the bed. In horror I see Riley moving about in the bedroom. Sometime during the night two baskets of laundry piled on top of eachother were moved aside as well as two childs gates and 19 steps were taken so she could lay near her friend. In horror I jump up to see if she is ok and all looks fine. I carry her down 19 steps and carefully put her down in the kitchen being careful not to step in any "mistakes" only to find none anywhere in the house. We make our way outside to a nice nearby spot for her to do her thing. As she glances up at me I know what is meant and we make the trek/hop all the way to the edge of the woods to a familiar spot and with a sigh of relief on her part she squats. We soon make our way indoors to breakfast. Tonight, we sleep in the kitchen together. Those that own Labs know what I mean.

I have that same bag.

Riles is on my "new" sleeping quarters.

Feeling better by the day. After this workout she was quite lame but oh how she enjoys the snow.

Actually, she's doing quite well indeed.

And we were doing so well. Just last week we settled into a routine of 30-40 minute walks, with shorter walks on some days just in case the knees needed to recover some, but she was walking so, so well and seemed so happy.

This was taken near the pharmacy school, our old haunts.

"This is where we walked, swam,

Hunted, danced and sang,

Take a picture here, take a souvenir."

Lately trying to get her outside to go to the bathroom has been her making a short trip into the woods and coming back with an item for her to retrieve. Sadly, that will have to wait a bit longer.

Overview

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a ligament located in the knee joint that helps to stabilize the joint and prevent excessive forward movement of the tibia (shinbone) relative to the femur (thighbone). An ACL injury occurs when this ligament is stretched or torn, usually as a result of a sudden, forceful twisting or bending motion of the knee.

ACL injuries are commonly seen in athletes who participate in sports that involve jumping, cutting, or pivoting movements, such as soccer, basketball, football, and skiing. However, anyone can suffer an ACL injury, regardless of age or activity level.

Symptoms of an ACL injury may include pain, swelling, instability or a feeling of the knee giving way, and difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected leg. Treatment for an ACL injury may include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligament. Rehabilitation and recovery time can take several months, and a return to full activity may take up to a year or more.

Symptoms

The symptoms of an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury can vary depending on the severity of the injury, but may include:

- Pain and swelling: Pain and swelling in the knee are common symptoms of an ACL injury. Swelling may occur immediately after the injury, or may develop gradually over a few hours.
