Ugh, I missed my own day and never got to post my take on Kubrick's Look.

Better late than never.

The novel is set in a near future English society that has a subculture of extreme youth violence. The teenage protagonist, Alex, leads his gang on a night of opportunistic, random ultra-violence. He is the narrator of the book and describes his violent exploits and his later experiences with state authorities intent on reforming him. He is convicted of murder and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Characterized as sociopath and a hardened juvenile delinquent, Alex also displays intelligence, quick wit, and a predilection for classical music. He is particularly fond of Beethoven, referred to as "Lovely Ludwig Van".

After Alex's fellow cellmates blame him for beating a troublesome cellmate to death, he is chosen to undergo an experimental behavior-modification treatment called the Ludovico Technique in exchange for having the remainder of his sentence commuted. The technique is a form of aversion therapy in which Alex receives an injection that makes him feel sick while watching graphically violent films, eventually conditioning him to suffer crippling bouts of nausea at the mere thought of violence. As an unintended consequence, the soundtrack to one of the films, the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, renders Alex unable to enjoy his beloved classical music as before. When the state undertakes to reform Alex—to "redeem" him—the novel asks, "At what cost?"

“A Clockwork Orange” was included on Time magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923, and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. [Source: Wikipedia]

The novel was the basis for a 1971 film adapted, produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick:

I like to take pictures of the books - I cannot help it - I recognize a light Kien Syndrome in my behavior :) Here is a detail from Burgess Clockwork Orange - 1973 Penguin Edition. Cover Design by David Pelham - it reminds me the best years of "Polish School of Poster".

It's the return of Mr Potato Head after an extended flickr break - for FGR and Drawing on Faces.

It's also a copy of this shot by asicas as part of TRP admin competition. Old spuddy went slightly OTT on the eye makeup front - I probably shouldn't have let him watch A Clockwork Orange again last night...

there's an old catholic church on wangfujing which always has skateboarders in front of it. I've never seen them skating anywhere else.

"There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence."

I guess synthemesc would be mescalin, and drenchrom would be adrenochrome. Vellocet might be speed?

This is a bar in Tokyo based on the millkbar in the book "A Clockwork Orange". They only sell normal drinks though: no synthemesc or vellocet. That's probably for the best though.

Part of the reason for this was that I tried to remove the background from the image. It was taken on the frontage of the bar, and there were things in the background that I felt detracted from the sign. I was quite pleased with the result as it looks like an icon or a button or something.

Our media/foosball room is the most overlooked room in the house. Technically a 3rd bedroom, but only measuring 8'x8', with no closet. We have crammed an insane amount of stuff in here. Without exaggeration, thousands of comic books, thousands of CD-R/DVD-R/BD-Rs backups, all our old almost-trash hardware that occasionally gets re-used, floppy discs, audio cassettes, some DC2120 tapes, routers, hubs, an Odyssey 2 console, vinyl records, empty cd spindles, spare keyboards, headphones, floppy drives, hard drives, torn up remnants of tee shirts & posters....... A veritable junkyard of stuff that we don't use very often, but also don't want to throw away. I've been looking into the idea of climate-proof comic book boxes, so they could be moved to the attic. It's an expensive prospect, and I'm not sure what we'd do with the extra space. It's not like we'd throw away the shelf the comics are on. We'd just put new stuff on the shelf. So the real question would be: From where would that new stuff come from, and how would it benefit wherever that new stuff comes from? It's hard to optimize when there's not a super-specific goal.
