RKO_3803. How extraordinary is it to watch these beautiful and colorful little birds doing their diving act!

This male Common Kingfisher achieved its goal and had a wonderful, though relatively small, meal!

It was a challenge (and objective) to get some nice shots of the diving Kingfisher and I guess I too achieved my objectives.

Transforming a deer photograph into a Van Gogh-style masterpiece using AI is a fascinating blend of nature and artistry! Here’s how you can do it:

Capturing the Deer

- Lighting & Composition: Opt for soft, natural light, preferably during golden hour, to highlight the texture of the deer’s fur.

- Background: Consider framing the deer against a dramatic landscape—perhaps misty woods or a sunlit field—to enrich the final aesthetic.

- Movement vs. Stillness: A standing, contemplative deer might suit a portrait effect, while one mid-stride could add dynamic energy.

AI Style Transfer

To achieve a Van Gogh effect:

- Use Style Transfer Tools: Platforms like Deep Dream Generator, Runway ML, or Prisma allow AI to overlay famous artistic styles.

- Adjust Brushstroke Effects: Van Gogh’s style is known for bold brushwork and swirling patterns, so tweak settings to exaggerate movement in the image.

- Color Enhancements: Amplify the saturation and introduce warm yellows, deep blues, and contrasting greens—hallmarks of his palette.

- Texture Refinement: Some tools let you emphasize impasto-like effects, mimicking his thick paint application.

Would you like advice on the best software for achieving this transformation? Or perhaps some tips on fine-tuning the AI-generated output?

If so maybe ask here

This photo was a pivotal photo for me. Even though it is not as excellent or as sharp of a photo that I wish, wish, wish that I had taken, I recognize that the experience itself will always be something that I will cherish. How many people can say that they spent a half hour with a Lynx in the wild?

I think that every photographer probably has a “bucket list” of photos they would like to achieve. I too, have realized that I just might have one as well. I would love to photograph the Aurora Borealis, a Lion, an Eagle with a fish, an Owl with it’s supper, Lightning streaking across the sky, BigFoot, (Yup, I think I saw it - but that is another story), a Whale breaching, a Puffin, a Cougar, a Wolf, another Fox (I don’t want to get greedy though), an enchanted forest, deep in the woods with a mist rolling in, and perhaps, a Polar Bear - though I think I am done with bears for a while…

Oh, and I want to drive across Canada and take an amazing landscape that represents each province.

Well, I guess that’s it - for now anyway. Gotta go. My battery is charged and I have so much to see and so little time to get it into my camera…

PS: to +/- achieve the desired abstractions for a subject i usually choose the camera and (expired) film of batches i somehow know what to expect from. But i have to confess, that i have know idea what happened here. ^.^

our care for nature is also our care for the entire Earth…

On one of our outtings earlier this year, Jannie was encouraged to "go find a stick" in the nearby woods. This is what he found...

Taken in April 2007.

Officially offered for sale on February 10, 1955, the first Chrysler 300 was athletic looking with 300 gross horsepower aboard, it was among the quickest cars of its time. It was able to achieve 60 mph in just 9.8 seconds, according to a test in Mechanix Illustrated by “Uncle Tom” McCahill. Uncle Tom also spurred the car up to a full 130 MPH. Tom McCahill and others in the contemporary automotive press used the term Beautiful Brutes” to describe Chrysler 300 series cars.

Besides being the most powerful production car of its time, the first Chrysler 300 was also among the best handling, thanks to a heavy-duty suspension. It can very well be considered an ancestor of the later muscle cars, though much more expensive, luxurious and exclusive.

The most prominent display of the first 300’s attributes did not come in any showroom, but on racetracks around the Southeast. Back in 1955, NASCAR stock cars were, in fact, stock production vehicles. Except for some crude safety equipment and numbers on the doors, they were almost indistinguishable from the cars the public could buy. With absolutely no financial support from Chrysler, Mercury Outboard founder Carl Kieckhaefer campaigned a fleet of white 300s during the 1955 NASCAR and AAA seasons with drivers like the Flock brothers (Tim, Fonty and Bob), Norm Nelson, Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson and Frank Mundy to name a few.

The Kieckhaefer 300s were spectacularly dominant and overwhelmed the factory-backed Chevrolets and Fords. Tim Flock took the driver’s championship while winning 18 races. He finished in the top five an astounding 32 times. His brother, Fonty, took another three victories, while Chrysler campaigner Lee Petty took home three trophies. Suddenly, the 300 had a glorious racing heritage in addition to its advertised Hundred Million Dollar Look.

Considering the short model year for that first 300, 1,725 were sold at an expensive $4,109 base price.

This was the car to start the legacy. Virgil Exner, then Chrysler's design chief, called his new styling direction "The Forward Look". The 1955 300 had a 2 door coupe body and clean, simple Chrysler Windsor side and rear quarter trim. Up front were two large Imperial “egg crate” grilles. This first of the letter series cars did not actually bear a letter. Chrysler’s original manuals named it the C-300, which was an appropriate name for the car. The “C-” designation was applied to all Chrysler models, and the 300 stood for the engine horsepower.

It was THE first modern American production car to achieve this 300hp output. Power came from an updated source already available; the fabled “Hemi” 331 cubic inch hemispherical head engine, modified with a “full race” cam, solid lifters, larger dual exhaust, and topped off with 2 4-barrel carburetors. The suspension was made firmer, allowing it to handle far better than most cars. It was given a special performance PowerFlite 2-speed automatic transmission, while the inside remained pure luxury.

Notably, it was fast. The battle lines would be drawn when it ran 127.58 MPH in the flying mile on the sands at Daytona Speed Weeks, and averaged 92 mph in the Daytona Grand National stock car race. This car dominated the stock car circuit, earning the NASCAR and AAA championships its first year out.

The car was available in three standard exterior colors: Black, Tango Red and Platinum, combined with a luxurious tan leather interior.

After L134 passed we'd achieved our goal but a quick check revealed there was another train not too far off so we hung around for it, our 7th here at Doswell and 17th of a fabuloud day, before heading down to Richmond town for some fabulous food and adult beverages. Amtrak regional train 95 from Boston to Norfolk slams south over the Buckingham Branch diamonds on Main 3 of CSXT's RF&P Sub at about MP CFP21.7. The train is framed between HN tower at right which was built in 1929 and has been closed since 1958 and the passenger station at left built in 1927 and now home to BB offices.

After a week when temperatures across the UK have hovered above a sweltering 30C/85F, I found myself longing for the chill and fog of early spring, and revisited a shot which I captured at the centre of Richmond Park in early April. On many mornings I'd hoped for calm conditions that would bring heavier fog, and before this particular sunrise the low wind speed and near-freezing temperature near the Pen Ponds created fog so dense that, for a couple of hours, visibility dropped to about 20 metres. As the sun finally crept above the woodland and created various shades of orange and pink on the horizon, I came across the bare branches of an oak tree, and next to it the remains of a broken tree trunk, part of which now lay on the ground. Something about this scene captivated me, so I stopped to capture it.

The image is a blend of seven bracketed exposures, and proved to be a fun editing project because of the contrast between intense foggy light around the sun and deep shadows covering the trees and foreground. I began by blending my exposures using luminosity masks, bringing up visibility of the tree trunks while toning down brightness around the sun. I then refined my own masks in order to select and intensify the fog in the background. This was achieved by duplicating the blue channel in the Channels Panel and using a Levels adjustment to increase the channel's contrast between Darks and Midtones, effectively removing the trees and grass from the selection. After extracting the highlights around the sun using a selection from my Brights luminosity masks, I was left with a selection of just the foggy background, where I blended in my brightest exposures using a combination of linear and reflective gradient masks.

Colour-grading the image was very straightforward, as the mixture of early-morning blues across the landscape and intense warm tones in the sky only needed a little emphasis. Using Colour Balance adjustments with Apply Image as a layer mask, I gave the midtones and shadows a colder finish, and targeted the brighter area around the sun to increase the reds and magentas in the highlights. Setting two low-opacity Colour Lookup adjustments to Soft Light, I then used the Foggy Night preset for the foreground and the Soft Warming preset for the sky.

Using Nik's Colour Efex Pro, I brought out a little of the tree trunks' texture using the Detail Extractor filter, and at the same time softened the detail in the sky using the Sunlight filter, which helped to bring out the hazy glow across the scene when I'd captured it. While I thought that viewers' eyes would gravitate to the sun emerging between the tree's branches, the tree and the trunks among the fog were what drew me to the scene, and I felt it was important to try to emphasise their weathered texture and, ultimately, their "character". There was something hopeful about the colour spreading across the horizon as the sun rose, but at the same time something poignant about a scene that seemed to tell a story of nature's brutality and illustrate how certain things, once broken, can't easily be healed or repaired.

The Milky Rises over Sedona's Thunder Mountain as seen from one of the many sandstone caves that can be found in the area. The orange glow is from the city of Sedona. The purple hues along the horizon is from smoke from nearby wildfires.

The exposure time shown is for the blue hour shot I took earlier. I then moved to the mouth of the cave to shoot the night sky an hour and a half or so later with a star tracker. That exposure was 4 minutes at f/4 and iso 800. The resulting images were then blended in photoshop to achieve this final image.

There are a few keen photographers in the team I'm in at work, so we have re-instated the team photography challenge. The first challenge was f/8 and 50mm. Now as you know, I usually shoot in as narrow a depth of field as possible. So, what to do with f8 and 50mm??!!

Well, it turns out you can still achieve some lovely background blur at these settings - a good reminder to step outside the usual comfort zone :-) Will post a few more photos over the next few days.

For the people who were wondering, why I wasn't taking pictures anymore...

I was very busy in the last 3 months with the writing of my phD-Thesis.

Today I finally submitted it!

Now I have to prepare my disputation...

and in 6 weeks from now it will be the end :) !

Images with a black background are extremely popular

and are highly requested in portrait photography because it gives a professional look to the images.

Portraits with black backgrounds are powerful because they do not distract from your subject. The viewer’s eye is not drawn away as it can be with a white background. On the other hand, portraits with white backgrounds are popular with designers. They lend well to having text and other graphics placed on top in editing.

High speed sync - a technique available to many modern cameras and flash units that makes a black background easily and quickly almost anywhere. (This shot was created before I had a flash capable if high speed sync; so it was actually taken in a dark room with a torch).

This article explains the technique and how to achieve the effect:

China, Harbin, City Impressions, St. Sophia Cathedral Place.

Heilongjiang Province, the most northeast part of China, when viewed on a map has the shape of a swan. Its capital city is Harbin, which is located south of Heilongjiang.

Not only for its special position, but also as the centre of Heilongjiang's political, economic, educational & cultural life, Harbin is described as the pearl beneath the swan's neck. Lying on the east of the Songnen Plain, what is more, Harbin plays a vital role in communications between South & North Asia as well the regions of Europe & the Pacific Ocean.

Harbin was the birthplace of Jin, 1115-1234 & Qing, 1644-1911, Dynasties, the latter of which had a very considerable influence on modern Chinese history.

At the end of the 19th century, Russia built the terminus of the Middle East Railway here. Later, more than 160,000 foreigners from 33 countries migrated to Harbin, promoting the development of a capitalist economy in the city. The economy & culture of Harbin achieved unprecedented prosperity at that time & the city gradually grew into a famous international commercial port. Assimilating external culture, Harbin created its unique & exotic cityscape. The majestic St. Sofia Orthodox Church & Zhongyang Dajie each built in a European style have the effect of bringing you into an 'eastern Moscow'. Even though you are sure to be attracted by various exotic buildings, the Dragon Tower which embodies the wisdom of the Chinese people is a must on your journey.

Besides these rich cultural heritages, Harbin is favoured with beautiful natural scenery. Based on meandering Song Hua River & subject to severe low temperatures in winter, down to -30°C, when I took this Pictures the Temperature varied between -20°C & -26°C but dry air, Harbin boasts a unique ice & snow culture. So, Harbin is also called the "Ice City".

The impressive "Ice & Snow Festival" is the greatest & unusual one in the world, therefor Harbin is also called the "Ice City".

As well the large Siberian Tiger & white tigers research centre, with about 500 tigers & a few other species, does an important work to prevent this species from extinction. The Research centre can be visited, tours in small a bus are available, passing through wide natural, separated, sections, however the focus point is to save the tigers.

DAYBREAK - ΧΑΡΑΜΑ

Photo taken the weekend of November 28th-29th, 2015, whilst my English wife Theresa Jane Brown and me were visiting friends in Limni, Evia island.

LIMNI - ΛΙΜΝΗ

Limni, on the island of Evia, is a small port, beach and tourist resort, which is beautiful the whole year round. It is located 80 km NW of Chalkida and about 150 km from Athens.

The island of Evia lies along the Eastern coast of Central Greece, and is accessible to the mainland via two bridges, an old wooden bridge and a contemporary suspension bridge. There are also frequent ferries to several parts of the island. It is 175 km long and is the second largest island in Greece, and the third largest in the Eastern Mediterranean.

I'm sure that this great egret was quite pleased with the big branch it acquired to take back to its mate to add to the nest. Not quite sure if she might feel the same. Seems quite awkward in dimensions. Overall, I'm not sure how they do it. Repeatedly for weeks, many times daily, the males get sent out for sticks to initiate the nest or for reinforcements for the nest. Either way, it's seemingly a never-ending task, which they gladly perform.

Yes, it's all fun and games until the babies are born and they get their legs and begin to develop their wings, but still need to be fed by their parents. For those of you who have witnessed the feeding of needy juveniles, you'll agree that there's nothing pleasant about it. Those pesky teenagers are quite demanding and tackle the parent and won't let go... screaming the entire time! LOL. Not sure how they continue to feed them. :-O

Hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend and ready for a new week ... I know that I am!

Excerpt from www.rbg.ca/events/chrysanthemum-and-dahlia-show/:

The Hamilton District Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society annual show includes dahlia blooms from the entire array of the ADS classification and is a highly impressive spectacle of size, colour, and form!

These blooms are “exhibition quality” and typically not found in local garden centres. There will also be a Design section of the Show which will highlight dahlias and chrysanthemums in various themes according to the Design Show Schedule. There is currently a judging school program running at Royal Botanical Gardens through GCO and many of the students are anxious to enter the show in order to achieve their credentials requirements.

Actually, this was part of a presentation called "Rise of the Jack o' lanterns". They are Jack O'Lantern sculptured from individually carved and formed pumpkins. Then illuminated and joined together to create different sculptures - Dinosaurs, cars, animals, TV characters, - etc Some carvings are 1 pumpkin some are many of them. www.therise.org/ This one was made with more than 30 Pumpkins and stretches across 3 bails of hay.

If you like Jack o lanterns these are some of most impressive I've seen. very cool. If you get to see one of these displays they do not allow tripods or monopods in the display area. Bump-up the ISO and hold steady. I found ISO 4500 worked for me. That got me in the 1/8 second range on many shots and better for some. (This was f5.3, 1/8 sec, ISO 4500 at 90mm).

Pixie doesn't go outside much these days. But she asked to go out and she nibbled a few grasses before heading back, but the cool concrete and the warm sunshine were calling her, so she succumbed. And purred for a half an hour.

For 40+ years, I've wanted to photograph a northbound UP train on the old Provo Main between Lakota Junction and Pleasant Grove. Specifically, a morning train at or near the Summer Solstice when the sun shines in the north for optimum lighting. My goal was achieved on Friday, June 16, 2023 when the LUL41 local departed Provo Yard early, and marched up the Provo Industrial Lead by 9:00 a.m. They had a sizable train, too with 18 cars. Pictured, the 41 is crossing Center Street in Orem, Utah. Decades ago, a short set out track stood here named "Vineyard" in the timetable, likely for sugar beet loading. The thistle plants were a welcome addition.

On this recent 28th anniversary trip to Yosemite NP, Alice and I were on a mission to find a Pileated Woodpecker and have some photo opportunities with one. We heard some, saw a couple at a distance, but this one, discovered by our Yosemite Conservancy Naturalist Guide was the only one in acceptable photo range. The habitat was dense forest with high contrast lighting. Considerable LR and Photoshop work have been done to make it presentable; Pileated Woodpecker; Dryocopus pileatus; Yosemite NP
