1989 British Grand Prix, Donington, Mat Oxley

Bike racing fan of the 80's was not only about the racing, the innovation around access to watch saw a revolution.

This era of the 80's saw the beginnings of Satellite TV, suddenly access to these races for generality across continents was possible. We were in a world where we could now follow riders, racers across a season, at the time also free.

That is, if you had a satellite dish.

Eurosport, and those early German channels were a great way into the world of Grand Prix, Superbike, Club racing. Following a British rider as said through a season was of course a new luxury.

Up's and downs of a year in racing to view in real time was to me a new exciting innovation in access.

Scotland's Niall Mackenzie timing wise was among those in this new media of satellite tv. Print media readership was still strong, social media was not a thing as now where riders can manage their own content to a degree. With that in mind.

Took it upon myself to file up what was in storage at my once parents house and garage. The T-Shirts I kept going and do pick up occasionally even still now. Old racing T's now a collectable it appears..

Road Racer magazine and RPM issues I have just filed up Mackenzie although do have some other back issues. Birthday cards were designed by Kevin Sheppard, T's Mostly by Mick Fisher. .An assortment of memorabilia from mugs to phone cards.

Reasons for, worked as a photojournalist and researcher, archival. A case of news desk national and, which I still do, 17th Century archives. So kinda what I did and do.

Mackenzie files really are a source file, looking at 80's 90's which was a golden age really racing wise.

History

Garden near north entrance

A blossoming tree at night in Washington park.

The City of Portland purchased the original 40.78 acres (16.5 hectares) in 1871 from Amos King for $32,624, a controversially high price for the time.[3][4] The area, designated "City Park", was wilderness with few roads. Thick brush, trees and roaming cougar discouraged access. In the mid-1880s, Charles M. Meyers was hired as park keeper. A former seaman without landscape training, he transformed the park by drawing on memories of his native Germany and European parks. By 1900, there were roads, trails, landscaped areas with lawns, manicured hedges, flower gardens, and a zoo. Cable cars were added in 1890 and operated until the 1930s.

In 1903, John Charles Olmsted of Olmsted Brothers, a nationally known landscape architecture firm, recommended several changes to the park including the present name, location of the entrance, separate roads and pedestrian paths, and replacement of formal gardens with native species. The name was officially changed from City Park to Washington Park in 1909.[5]

When the county poor farm closed in 1922, the 160 acres (64.75 hectares) were added to Washington Park.

Portland's zoo was founded in Washington Park in 1887 near where the reservoirs are presently located. It moved in 1925 to what is now the Japanese Garden, and moved again in 1959 to its present location at the park's southern edge. The only surviving structure from the old zoo is the elephant barn, now converted into a picnic shelter and decorated with tile mosaic of various animals and a life-size brick relief sculpture of an elephant and calf.

The City of Portland plans to demolish the existing number 3 and 4 outdoor reservoirs, then replace them with underground reservoirs covered by reflecting pools, due to their age and a federal mandate to cover all reservoirs.[6] The $67 million project has attracted opposition from historical preservationists and residents concerned about construction impacts.[7]

Student activists from CT Students for a Dream (C4D) and supporters rally to demand justice in higher education for undocumented students with legislation that equalizes access to student-generated funds: State Capitol, Hartford, Connecticut, Thursday, April 13, 2017.

"In Connecticut, public colleges and universities set aside a proportion of tuition revenue to be used as ‘institutional aid’ to assist students with a demonstrated financial need. However, immigrant students who have grown up in CT and have graduated high school here are not eligible for this student-generated aid. All Connecticut students, including undocumented students, pay tuition and therefore contribute towards this institutional aid pool of funds. Yet Connecticut does not allow immigrant students access to institutional aid themselves. This aid is student funded, we believe all students who pay tuition should be be eligible to receive it.”

Springdale is a tiny settlement along the interstate in south central Montana. I had fun photographing their beautiful little school and an interesting old storefront I saw in town.

"Springdale derived its name from the many hot springs in the area; it was a way station for travelers on their way to Hunter Hot Springs. Today, Springdale Bridge is a state fishing access site along the Yellowstone River." -travelmt.com

Once upon a time, you could drive down a short dirt road in the foreground and access Coal Run Junction with ease. Nowadays, a recent arrival of a trailer-type business has replaced the old soccer field and has blocked off direct access, except by a much rougher dirt road closer to the tracks. Though it is now much more difficult to access, this public road that crosses over the tracks gives an interesting angle for anything heading west. Seen here is E402 doubled up with a northbound manifest, having 7 motors on the head end on its trip towards Russell. We had noticed the green signal and had waited a good half hour to see what it would be. We usually have a pretty good idea, but this completely caught us by surprise. The train would meet C760 on up ahead at Wagner before continuing west.

Thanks to Tearfund’s partner in Uganda, the Diocese of Kigezi, more families in the district can access clean water. Thank you for supporting this work through our Connected Church programme. (long image)
