The Safari would continue its trek on US.319 east to SR.206 which would take us south to Osierfield by way of Osierfield Dr and Wray Rd. All of the occupancies of the van had been here before at one time or another which for Tim, Rudy, and I was last August. The sweeping curve just south of the S.E of Osierfield Siding would help make this shot the favorite CSX shot of the trip as all including Mike have long for a shot like this. AC4400CW #5108 leading #122 and #5229 front my favorite intermodal at speed.........priceless.
Roster shot of CSX AC4400AH 5107, the W. Thomas Rice Special script writing unit, trailing 4th of 5 on CSX Q143-02 at Howell Tower in Atlanta, GA.
While Q613 was pounding the diamond at Baldwin, Duval Ramp kicked out a southbound lined toward Baldwin. We would relocate to the Yellowwater Rd crossing near the S.End of East Pass. There we would record the passage of Q741 with the usual look and the usual looking power. AC4400AH #561 and ES44AH #943 had the juice train in tow this day. The panel track in the foreground will eventually tie the S.End of East Pass with new track that will parallel the original bypass on Baldwin Yards east side.
We would return to trackside at Screven Ave to wait for and shoot the out bound Q692. Bound for "Clinchfield Country" the manifest had the usual "Clinchfield" power in this case ES44AH #805 and AC4400AH #551.
CW44AH #576 leads inbound freight Q551 at Atwater Rd. Two other GE's and an EMD trail the "Heavy AC4400AH" as they work to drag a long line of manifest out of one the many dips in the right of way.
Sitting at Nicholls St for a crew change and the arrival of Q491, was Q101. The Savannah bound intermodal with export and domestic container loads was the next train to come by our position at Screven Ave. ES44AH #842 and the last purchased AC4400AH #5122, led the train off the "Fitz Sub" and north on the Jesup.
One of the coal trains that Mike was looking for was N172. Normally it would have come down the Nahunta to Moncrief or West Jax. But there was the curfew and so went down the Callahan Sub and would pass the train pictured above at Crawford Siding. Having missed the Orlando bound coal train, we settled for the Unit Ethanol train ID'ed as K422 which came up to our position at CR.108 and past the now finished but not in service 2nd main at Callahan Jct. AC4400AH #5104 and SD40-2 #8100 powered the train today
One train that was highly sought after by Tim, Rudy and myself was the JAIX unit coal train. Power was AC4400AH #539 still in its original YN2 paint, Ratty Dash 8 #7633 with the "CSX" on its flanks missing, and YN3 AC4400CW #45. Seen from US.319, the empty Jacksonville Power park unit coal train would be our last train in Fitzgerald.
From my perch on top of the Train Chaser II, I along with dozens of other Railwatchers catch Q034 climbing up from the St. Mary's River. The depression does little to slow the Hi- priority intermodal down as the 3 GE units DC GEVOs #5408 & #5322 and AC4400AH #555 hustle thru town.
BIRTHDAY BOY TOLGA MINDS HIS CAMERA WHILE CATCHING THE PASSING OF THE ORLANDO BOUND Q188 AT SOUTH LAKELAND. AC4400AH #506 AND ES44AH #850 DREW A LENGTHY INTERMODAL THAT NIGHT MUCH TO EVERYONES DELIGHT. WE WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN THIS TRAIN HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR A FAULTY EOT, THAT ISSUE REQUIRED Q188 TO STOP AT GAY RD. WHICH GAVE US THE CHANCE TO CATCH IT HERE.
The ES44AH's get all of the attention from most CSXT fans. We tend to forget about the AC locomotives that preceeded them the AC4400AH"s #495-599 and the #5100-5122. #557 caught our attention as it rested along with a pair of SD70M's on an industrial spur that parallels SR.60. Originally obtained in YN2, the unit is now in YN3 paint and has held up well.
ONCE K789 CLEARED THE EAST LEG OF WINSTON WYE, A LONG AND HEAVY PHOSPHATE UNIT TRAIN BILLED AS THE K820 HEADED FOR SOUTH LAKELAND. POWER FOR THE DAY WAS AC4400AH #556 AND A PAIR OF C40-8W'S NUMBERED #7311 AND #7736.
The last train of the night for us was Q188. AC4400AH #558 led 4 other GE units and a rather short train of IM.
