Oranjestad is the capital and largest city of Aruba. Oranjestad is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to simply as "Playa". As of 2015, the population of the capital was around 35,000.
The town was built around Fort Zoutman shortly after it was built in 1796. Initially, the town had no official name, being known only as the town on the Bay of Horses (Paardenbaai in Dutch), a place from which native-bred[citation needed] horses were raised and exported to neighboring Curaçao. The town has ever since been the capital city of the island.
The city is named after the first King William I of the Netherlands. The name was conferred on the city in the 1820s when interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of (alluvial) gold deposits.
Air Aruba once had its headquarters in Oranjestad. Air Aruba suspended its operations on October 23, 2000.
Tiara Air has had its head office in Oranjestad since 2006, except between 2014 and 2016 when the company suspended services due to the Venezuelan Airline Crisis.

The four companies comprising the Royal Dutch Shell refining operation; the actual refinery, oil bunkering, the tugboat company (KTK) and the local distribution of refined products (CurOli/Gas) were each sold to the government of Curaçao in 1985 for the symbolic sum of one guilder per company, or a total of 4 guilders and is now leased to PDVSA, the state owned Venezuelan oil company. Schlumberger, the world's largest oil field services company is incorporated in Willemstad.
Numerous financial institutions are incorporated in Willemstad due to Curaçao's favourable tax policies.
The Avalon University School of Medicine is located in Willemstad. The Caribbean Medical University is also located in Willemstad, close to the city centre.
Major League Baseball players Jair Jurrjens, Wladimir Balentien, Jurickson Profar, Andruw Jones, Ozzie Albies, Kenley Jansen and Jonathan Schoop are from Willemstad.
Pabao Little League has appeared in five Little League World Series, winning in 2004. They were crowned the International Champions in 2019 after a victory over Japan. They were defeated 8-0 in the World Championship by River Ridge, Louisiana. In 2008, another Pabao Little League team won the Junior League World Series, after winning the Latin America Region, then defeating the Asia-Pacific Region and Mexico Region champions to become the International champion, and finally defeating the U.S. champion (West Region), Hilo American/National LL (Hilo, Hawaii), 5-2.
Willemstad is served by Curaçao International Airport, located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) north of the city, which is annually used by about two million passengers.

The Fort Oranje Lighthouse is located at the southern end of downtown Kralendijk on the island of Bonaire. It is next to the cruise terminal. The 44-foot lighthouse was built in 1932.

This photograph was taken during our stay on the Caribbean island of Bonaire in 2009. The Onima Cave From a website: Small signposts direct the way to the Indian inscriptions found on a 3-foot limestone ledge that juts out like a partially formed cave entrance. Look up to see the red-stained designs and symbols inscribed on the limestone, said to have been the handiwork of the Arawak Indians when they inhabited the island centuries ago. The pictographs date back at least to the 15th century.

The Queen Emma Bridge (Dutch: Koningin Emmabrug) is a pontoon bridge across St. Anna Bay in Curaçao. It connects the Punda and Otrobanda quarters of the capital city, Willemstad. The bridge is hinged and opens regularly to enable the passage of oceangoing vessels. On the opposite end from the hinge is a small shelter where an operator controls two diesel engines turning propellers. The propellers are mounted perpendicular to the length of the bridge and allow it to swing parallel to the shore. The process only takes a few minutes to complete.
The Punda neighbourhood in Willemstad is one of the Caribbean’s few UNESCO World Heritage sites. It showcases the typical Dutch colonial architecture found in the Netherlands in a very colourful way! / Le quartier de Punda à Willemstad est l'un des rares endroits des Caraïbes déclaré Site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Il met en valeur l'architecture coloniale typique qu'on trouve aux Pays-Bas d'une façon très colorée!

Atop the Sablica Hill, 68 meters (223.09 ft.) above the water of the surrounding Schottegat, stands historical Fort Nassau.
Near the end of the year 1796 the owner of the Sablica Hill and the surrounding plantation, Mr. Hubertus Coerman, received a letter from the Military Committee of the Curaçao Council, announcing that a fort would be built on his property. To the discontent of the citizens it was also decided that they had to come up with the necessary funds to build the fort: sixty thousand guilders, an enormous amount in those days. Moreover the people had their doubts about the use of a defending fort, justly so as it turned out. The fort never played a very active part in the defense of the town. It had mostly a preventive function. Only on January 1st, 1807, the fort came into action against an English invasion, but to no effect.
The Curaçao forts owe their existence to the expansion wars that were fought by the Spaniards, the Dutch, the Portuguese, the English, the French and the Scandinavians in the Caribbean area.
This fort was originally called “Fort Republiek” (Republic) after the Batavian Republic that was founded near the end of the 18th century by the French rulers in Holland. In 1807, when the English invaded the island successfully and took control in spite of the fire from the fort, the name changed to “Fort George” to honor England’s king George III. In 1816, due to lasting peace between Holland and England, the island was given back to the Dutch. In honor of the Dutch royal family the fort was renamed “Fort Orange Nassau”, soon to be called in popular speech “Fort Nassau”.
Other than the name, the fort has relatively changed very little over the years. In the period after 1825, when it ceased to be active, it has gained more experience in supplying good food than in conducting of wars. In 1958, just after Curaçao became autonomous, the Curaçao Foundation for the Preservation of Monuments was given a long-lease contract in order to exploit the fort as a recreational and tourist attraction.
Furthermore the fort remains important for the harbor, serving as a signal-station for the incoming and outgoing vessels in the St. Anna Bay.
From 1959 there has been a restaurant atop Fort Nassau. Fort Nassau restaurant is unique in all aspects. Situated high upon a hill at the harbour’s entrance, it has a beautiful 360º view over part of the island and the city of Willemstad with the unique bridges that connect Punda and Otrobanda. Oranjestad is the capital and largest city of Aruba. Oranjestad is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to simply as "Playa". As of 2015, the population of the capital was around 35,000.
The town was built around Fort Zoutman shortly after it was built in 1796. Initially, the town had no official name, being known only as the town on the Bay of Horses (Paardenbaai in Dutch), a place from which native-bred[citation needed] horses were raised and exported to neighboring Curaçao. The town has ever since been the capital city of the island.
The city is named after the first King William I of the Netherlands. The name was conferred on the city in the 1820s when interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of (alluvial) gold deposits.
Air Aruba once had its headquarters in Oranjestad. Air Aruba suspended its operations on October 23, 2000.
Tiara Air has had its head office in Oranjestad since 2006, except between 2014 and 2016 when the company suspended services due to the Venezuelan Airline Crisis.
