Airbus A320
I was not on the runway centerline, but I was lucky to be aligned with the axis of the aircraft
It isn't just an extensive fleet of Boeing aircraft that United Airlines operates, since the mid-1990s, the carrier was a large customer for the Airbus A320 family, both the Airbus A319s and Airbus A320s arrived to retire to allow the withdrawal of their remaining Boeing 727-200, Boeing 737-200 and eliminate the Boeing 737-300/500 fleet post-Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the ensuing global economic downturn.
United Airlines took delivery of their first Airbus A320s back in 1993, the first time they have sourced aircraft from the European plane maker when at the time, the carrier was staunchly loyal to both Boeing and McDonnell Douglas. Between 1993 to 2002, United Airlines took delivery of 98 Airbus A320s in total, with the smaller Airbus A319s totalling 55 with deliveries from 1997 to 2002.
In the ensuing years and ever since United Airlines merger with Continental Airlines back in 2010, United has once again been fiercely loyal towards the Boeing 737 family with well over 400 of the type in service with new deliveries still ongoing. This isn't to say that United has fallen out of love with the Airbus A320 family, the carrier in recent years have gone on to acquire 29 second-hand Airbus A319s and 2 Airbus A320s from China Southern between 2016 to 2020. United Airlines took on 5 Airbus A320s as a source for spare parts between 2019 to 2021 and very recently, the carrier has begun the process of withdrawing their high-cycle Airbus A320s with 2 no longer in the fleet.
In late-2019, as to find a replacement for their long-haul Boeing 757-200 fleet, United Airlines placed an order for 50 Airbus A321XLRs wit deliveries due from 2024. By mid-2021, United Airlines placed one of its largest order for narrow-body jets, ordering not only 200 Boeing 737 MAXs, but also ordering 70 Airbus A321neos. The first Airbus A321neo for United Airlines has since rolled off the production with delivery expected later in 2023 and will mark the first time in 21 years since the carrier has taken delivery of brand new Airbus aircraft.
Currently, United Airlines operates 178 Airbus A320 family aircraft, which includes 81 Airbus A319s and 97 Airbus A320s. United Airlines have 70 Airbus A321neos and 50 Airbus A321XLRs on-order.
November Four Eight Two Uniform Alpha is one of 97 Airbus A320s in service with United Airlines, delivered new to the carrier on lease from GECAS on 15th November 2001, later being leased from AerCap since November 2021 and she is powered by 2 International AeroEngines IAE V2527-A5 engines. She has operated for United's low-cost subsidiary, Ted between 2004 to 2009.
