We are approaching Seattle's historical Marketplace, where many old and new shops sell their wares on the scenic bay of the city.
The Thornes Marketplace building was constructed in 1873 to house a dry goods store called McCallum’s. The original structure was designed by local architect William Fenno Pratt in the commercial Victorian style, but subsequent additions and a new facade added in 1933 completely changed the exterior’s look.
Victorian commercial buildings are typically ornate, with pointed arches, detailed cornices (moldings that jut out from the top of buildings) and dentils (the patterned, often tooth-like lines below the cornices).
Much of downtown Northampton was built in this style, said Lumelsky. “Most of the buildings were built around the same time, during and a little after the Civil War,” he says. “Fire destroyed a lot of the previous wood buildings.”
