- Online Auctions to be provided by Gmarket as Yahoo!’s Open Strategy provides a platform for third parties to gain distribution through the Yahoo! Front Page

SINGAPORE, 28 October 2008 – Yahoo! today announced that it has launched the trial of a new online marketplace on the Yahoo! Singapore Front Page (www.yahoo.com.sg) in partnership with Gmarket, a leading online auctions provider in Asia. The new co-branded Yahoo! and Gmarket product is a significant example of Yahoo!’s Open Strategy, which allows consumers to experience the best of the web while third parties benefit from Yahoo!’s leadership in consumer reach and engagement on its network, including the #1 position of the Yahoo! Singapore Front Page.

Gmarket in association with Yahoo! Singapore is a new service that allows sellers to reach more customers and increase online sales. Currently the site is in a trial-stage where sellers can register before listing items for free. Fees are only applied once a transaction is complete. The new service is designed to put sellers in more control. For example, sellers can offer fixed price trading, price bargaining and discount coupon options to entice customers. The service also provides Mini-Shop online storefronts, loyalty (including Mileage Points) programs and online marketing services from Yahoo! that can help boost selling potential through customer leads.

“Yahoo! Singapore is the leading online starting point for internet users because we provide an open platform to give consumers the very best online content and user experience. Our partnerships are key to that strategy, and allows people to access what they like best about the web,” said Ken Mandel, vice president and managing director, Yahoo! Southeast Asia. “Yahoo!’s partnership with Gmarket will provide an essential marketplace experience for online sellers and buyers in Singapore,” Mandel added.

“Gmarket is a leading auctions provider in Asia and the largest online marketplace in Korea – one of the most wired nations on earth. We have the experience and the technology that provides a better experience for sellers and buyers in an internet savvy market like Singapore,” said HyunWook Cho, Leader of Global Business Group, Gmarket. “Gmarket’s partnership with Yahoo! will enable buyers and sellers to tap into world-leading technology and cutting edge e-commerce tools and services to help them buy and sell items more easily,” said HyunWook Cho.

Yahoo! retired its Singapore Auctions service in September and shifted to a more open and partner-centric approach utilizing Gmarket in association with Yahoo! Singapore. Yahoo! is currently migrating the loyal Yahoo! Singapore Auctions community to the co-branded Gmarket service.

“The partnership with Gmarket is just the start of Yahoo!’s Open Strategy for publishers in this region,” said Fernando Pizarro, head of business development for Yahoo! Southeast Asia. “We welcome more online companies into the Yahoo! network, to help them with distribution and, at the same time, become more essential for online users,” Pizarro added.

Out of desperation, Indy shoots away at the truck he thinks Marion's in, causing it to careen out of control, ride up on the side of a building, flip over, and blow up. A perfect example for why he doesn't have many girlfriends.

Photos taken on August 16, 2009. This corner, Centinela and Venice Blvd. in West Los Angeles, California used to be the site of a singe SAFEWAY Supermarket. That supermarket was closed in the 1960s and demolished. SAFEWAY Supermarkets rebuilt on the site, turning the property into a shopping center. This shopping center opened around 1972. When the older SAFEWAY closed, the property sat vacant for a few years. The new SAFEWAY Shopping Center contained a SAFEWAY Supermarket and a Sav-on Drug Store. The old SAFEWAY, which I don't remember very well, nor do I have a photograph of it, as far as I can remember, looked close to the former SAFEWAY in Westchester on La Tijera that is now a Pep Boys Auto Supply Store.

The view here is along Centinela of Mitsuwa Marketplace (former SAFEWAY Supermarket), which is to the left of the CVS Pharmacy Drug Store. The CVS is a former Savon Drugs, converted to CVS Pharmacy in 2006. It was part of the take over of CVS on all the freestanding Sav-on and Osco Drug Stores from Albertsons Supermarkets. Albertsons kept all their in house Sav-on and Osco Drug Store Pharmacies. This former Sav-on was also renamed OSCO Drugs in the 1980s, however it did not last a long time, as the parent company renamed all the West Coast (and a few other regions) back to Sav-On Drug Stores. It was a Sav-On Drug Store at the time of its conversion to CVS Pharmacy.

Next to CVS, on its left is the former SAFEWAY Supermarket. SAFEWAY operated at this site from around 1972 to 1984 when it converted the former SAFEWAY to a Liquor Barn Store. The conversion to Liquor Barn was the result of SAFEWAY acquiring several Thrifitmart Supermarkets. Thriftimart had a location about a mile south at Washington Place and Centinela. SAFEWAY remodeled the Thriftimart Supermarket and closed down this store. Almost immediately after SAFEWAY closed this location, it stripped the old SAFEWAY of all its refridgeration units and converted it into a LIquor Barn. This was a giant liquor store that had a large selection of liquor (same concept as Bev More--started by the same former SAFEWAY Executives), sodas and crackers/chips. SAFEWAY operated this LIquor Barn for a few years, until they divested the chain, which subsequently closed down. After LIquor Barn closed down, the store sat vacant for awhile, then reopened as an independent Asian Grocer. The old SAFEWAY was converted into an independent market/cafe/shops, which includes a small market, cafe and a book store. It almost appears that each section is owned by a separate vendor, or owner. The bookstore has it own glassed off section. The owners of this store had a couple of others in the area, including Downtown Los Angeles in LIttle Tokoyo. A few years ago another company, Mitsuwa Marketplace took over the store. It is basically unchanged in its format. There is also a Mitsuwa Marketplace in Torrance as well as some locations in Northern California.

From Mitsuwa's Website:

Located at the corner of Venice Blvd. & Centinela Ave., Mitsuwa Marketplace, Santa Monica store provides one-stop shopping of Japanese groceries and products. The specialty shops inside this unique store offers Books, Cafe, Household Items, Video Rental, and more. Our Restaurant Row is the place to enjoy your lunch or dinner with many authentic choices; Ramen, Udon, Donburi dishes, and more. Our recent addition to the store is "Books & Cafe", providing a serene and comfortable space with Japanese books and robust brew of premium blue mountain coffee.

Last night we pushed out some refinements to one of our products at work, Marketplace. I'm pretty happy with the UI tweaks. This is the homepage with a better search form layout and tighter design. Hoping to continue to improve this.

Newness is on top :)

Check out the FREEBIES on Marketplace Monday. There's an OOTD for tweens, but something for the littles too!

Take me to an Electronic Supermarket i said, and that's where i landed ;) Perfect location for street photography on the run and fantastic natural colors. In the narrow walks with lot of people pushing around there's no place and no time to use a tripod or care for camera settings. It's mainly point your camera above your head to a desired direction and shoot with possible best settings for handheld exposure and depth of field in low light condition.

Title: Mercado Ferreria Borges

Creator: Machado, Joao Carlos

Creator role: Architect

Date: 1885-1888

Current location: Porto, Porto, Portugal

Description of work: The Mercado Ferreria Borges was built in 1885, by order of the city council, in order to replace the old Mercado da Ribera. It was named after Jose Borges Ferreria, a Portuguese politician and author of the 1833 codification of commercial law. It operated as a market for a very short period of time, but was hardly used because of the reluctance of traders to leave the old market. Between 1939 and 1978 it was used as a fruit market and was later renovated after a long period of neglect. Today the Mercado Ferreria Borges is an exhibition and cultural hall.

Almost all the people at the marketplace of Bac Ha belongs to the Flower Hmong tribe.

The Hmong, also known as the Miao, originated from southern China and started to settle in Vietnam during the 19th century when they built hamlets in the highland regions of Ha Giang and Lao Cai provinces. The history of this emigration is closely linked to that of the Hmong struggle against the Chinese feudal authorities.

The Hmong belong to the Hmong-Mien group of the Austro-Thai language family. Because of their dispersion and geographical isolation, the various groups are separated from each by language, dress and customs, which may vary greatly from region to region and even from village to village.

There are about 750,000 Hmong in Vietnam (over 1% of Vietnam’s population).

The Hmong are widely spread across the highland areas of Vietnam, but particularly near the Chinese border down to the 18th parallel.

The Hmong particularly value silver jewelry as this signifies wealth and a good life. Men, women and children wear silver necklaces and bracelets. Hmong society is characterized by great solidarity among members of the same family and among villagers.

The Hmong are spirit worshippers. They believe in household spirits and those of the door and cattle. Every house has an altar, where protection for the household is sought.
