They are back again! John, Jim, and James (well, not quite) whom you've already met for "Contraption" (see the first comment, please). They are still searching for the Center of the Universe. And this time the Dimension Skipper™ accidentally brought them to Sprout Forest, a particularly thick forest, truly uncharted territory. At the end of that ominous day James went missing. But what happened? To find out, John (the guy in yellow with the phone, the latest and greatest "Pear uPhone 9z Plus Pitch Black SE™") quickly summoned Detective Cagney of SFPD. Soon a suspect was found, Peter Croc, who had lurked about the scene of the crime for a while. Here is an excerpt from the record of interrogation:

Det. Cagney: I see particularly and suspiciously clean teeth here. Did you brush your teeth in order to erase all traces?

Peter C.: Get chat ching oug of my mouch, I can'g chpeak. I alwaych bruch my teech after dinner. And lunch. You chould do cho, too.

Det. Cagney: What did you have for dinner today?

Peter C.: Chrpouts. We are in Chprout Forecht. Now will you pleache...

Jim (kneeling): James? Are you in there?? Can you hear me???

Peter C.: Chtop yelling into my mouch, my chroat tichles!

Jeremy (new team member, the guy with the meter stick / arrow): Detective, I'm not quite sure whether it is possible that our suspect has, err, swallowed our colleague. Ever since James remembered to always bring his lunchbox, he, well, has put on quite considerably. Not sure if he would, ahem, go in.

Peter C.: Chere! I tolg you, I was innochent!!! I'm a gourmeg, nog a gourmang! Now geg chat ching oug of my mouch, my jaw hurtch!

Jeremy: Sir, may I...?

Det. Cagney: Peter Croc, you are still under suspicion to be involved in the disappearance of James. Further investigations will be necessary. Until further notice you are supposed to stay within Sprout Forest limits. Jeremy, you may remove the arrow now.

Jim: ?!?!!! Hey, Jeremy, wait a sec....

Three questions remain: Will they find James? Did the suspect tell the truth? And did Jim get out in time?

Thank you for your kind comments, I appreciate every single one, and your faves! Vielen Dank für Eure tollen Kommentare und Faves!

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!

Some time when the river is ice ask me

mistakes I have made. Ask me whether

what I have done is my life. Others

have come in their slow way into

my thought, and some have tried to help

or to hurt: ask me what difference

their strongest love or hate has made.

I will listen to what you say.

You and I can turn and look

at the silent river and wait. We know

the current is there, hidden; and there

are comings and goings from miles away

that hold the stillness exactly before us.

What the river says, that is what I say.

The Sopwith Triplane was a British single seat fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company during the First World War. Pilots nicknamed it the Tripehound or simply the Tripe. The Triplane became operational with the Royal Naval Air Service in early 1917 and was immediately successful. The Triplane was nevertheless built in comparatively small numbers and was withdrawn from active service as Sopwith Camels arrived in the latter half of 1917. Surviving aircraft continued to serve as operational trainers until the end of the war.

The Triplane began as a private venture by the Sopwith Aviation Company. The fuselage and empennage closely mirrored those of the earlier Pup, but chief engineer Herbert Smith gave the new aircraft three narrow-chord wings to provide the pilot with an improved field of view. Ailerons were fitted to all three wings. By using the variable incidence tailplane, the aircraft could be trimmed to fly hands-off. The introduction of a smaller 8 ft span tailplane in February 1917 improved elevator response. The Triplane was initially powered by the 110 hp Clerget 9Z nine-cylinder rotary engine, but most production examples were fitted with the 130 hp Clerget 9B rotary. At least one Triplane was tested with a 110 hp Le Rhône rotary engine, but this did not provide a significant improvement in performance. The prototype Triplane, serial N500, first flew on 28 May 1916, with Sopwith test pilot Harry Hawker at the controls. Within three minutes of takeoff, Hawker startled onlookers by looping the aircraft three times in succession. The Triplane was very agile, with effective, well-harmonised controls. When maneuvering, however, the Triplane presented an unusual appearance. One observer noted that the aircraft looked like "a drunken flight of steps" when rolling. In July 1916, N500 was sent to Dunkirk for evaluation with "A" Naval Squadron, 1 Naval Wing. It proved highly successful. The second prototype, serial N504, was fitted with a 130 hp Clerget 9B. N504 first flew in August 1916 and was eventually sent to France in December. This aircraft served as a conversion trainer for several squadrons. Between July 1916 and January 1917, the Admiralty issued two contracts to Sopwith for a total of 95 Triplanes, two contracts to Clayton & Shuttleworth Ltd. for a total of 46 aircraft, and one contract to Oakley & Co. Ltd. for 25 aircraft. Seeking modern aircraft for the Royal Flying Corps, the War Office also issued a contract to Clayton & Shuttleworth for 106 Triplanes. In February 1917, the War Office agreed to exchange its Triplane orders for the Admiralty's SPAD S.VII contracts. Production commenced in late 1916. Sopwith and Clayton & Shuttleworth completed their RNAS production orders, but Oakley, which had no prior experience building aircraft, delivered only three Triplanes before its contract was cancelled in October 1917. For unknown reasons, the RFC Triplane contract issued to Clayton & Shuttleworth was simply cancelled rather than being transferred to the RNAS. Total production amounted to 147 aircraft. No. 1 Naval Squadron became fully operational with the Triplane by December 1916, but the squadron did not see any significant action until February 1917, when it relocated from Furnes to Chipilly. No. 8 Naval Squadron received its Triplanes in February 1917. Nos. 9 and 10 Naval Squadrons equipped with the type between April and May 1917. The only other major operator of the Triplane was a French naval squadron based at Dunkirk, which received 17 aircraft. The Triplane's combat debut was highly successful. The new fighter's exceptional rate of climb and high service ceiling gave it a marked advantage over the Albatros D.III, though the Triplane was slower in a dive. The Germans were so impressed by the performance of the Triplane that it spawned a brief triplane craze among German aircraft manufacturers. Their efforts resulted in no fewer than 34 different prototypes, including the Fokker V.4, prototype of the successful Fokker Dr.I. The Triplane was famously flown by No. 10 Naval Squadron's "B" Flight, better known as "Black Flight." This all-Canadian flight was commanded by the ace Raymond Collishaw. Their aircraft, named Black Maria, Black Prince, Black George, Black Death and Black Sheep, were distinguishable by their black-painted fins and cowlings. Black Flight claimed 87 German aircraft in three months while equipped with the Triplane. Collishaw himself scored 34 of his eventual 60 victories in the aircraft, making him the top Triplane ace.

This trackage is the old Pacific Coast Railway – an independent road that served Seattle to the north and coal mines to the east in Black Diamond. It lost its independence in 1951 when it was sold to the GN and ultimately passed to the Burlington Northern and then present day BNSF.

The most fascinating part of this line, however, is that the Milwaukee Road’s Pacific extension had trackage rights over this line and until 1971 there was catenary strung over these ras serving the MILW’s Coast Division thru freights and in an earlier era the Olympian Hiawatha!

MOSE (MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico, Experimental Electromechanical Module) is a project intended to protect the city of Venice, Italy, and the Venetian Lagoon from flooding. The project is an integrated system consisting of rows of mobile gates installed at the Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia inlets that are able to temporarily isolate the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea during high tides. Together with other measures such as coastal reinforcement, the raising of quaysides, and the paving and improvement of the lagoon, MOSE is designed to protect Venice and the lagoon from tides of up to 3 metros.

I had been searching for this scan for a few days, taken in March 1984 in Lucknow shed. The reason - COVID!! I felt a bit feverish and had taken paracetomol before my visit to the shed but I put it down to being hot in Lucknow that day!

I was on my way from Oxford to Amp Pipal in Nepal for the last three months of my medical studies, doing an elective placement in the Himalayas. Travelling via Delhi, Lucknow, Gorakpur and Pokhara - I had taken influenza B with me and became seriously ill in Pokhara with what turned out to be flu pneumonia.

I was so ill, I could hardly walk and I had to ask a lovely couple from Yarm who were in the room next to me to get me to Katmandu with them on the plane. Upon arrival I collapsed on the tarmac. Fortunately a medical missionary was behind me on the way down the aircraft steps and took me to the American mission hospital in Katmandu where I spent 2 weeks, initially unconscious. I was eventually repatriated thanks to the British Commisioner in Nepal and arrived home weighing just 7 stone, having nearly pegged it!

Moral of the story - flu can kill fit 24 year olds, 25,000 folk died of flu that year, I never made the news as a warning about the dangers of flu, nobody locked down anything or stopped international travel (although I didn't venture overseas beyond Europe for another 5 years!!).

Now Germany, France and Italy want to block entry to us even when we are nearly all vaccinated - the world has gone mad!!!

More BrickArms modular fun!

WEEK 45 – Union Avenue OfficeMax, Set I

This shot shows the other side of the roadside sign for OfficeMax (with the Danver’s-shaped Cook Out sign also visible in the background). I’m not sure which side is worse and which is better, but they’ve definitely both become rather sun-worn over the years, that yellow background behind the OfficeMax logo looking very faded here in 2020.

Speaking of 2020 – I should mention that it was not long after my visit, about late February of 2021, that it was announced Gordon Food Service would be bringing a new grocery store to Midtown by opening up in the former OfficeMax location on Union. The trouble is, OfficeMax was not “former” yet: it was still very much operational, and moreover had not announced any plans to cease operating here. Obviously the news was trustworthy, given that GFS had already submitted documents to the Board of Adjustment; and also obviously, it’s not difficult at all to believe that OfficeMax would have any problem closing a store if another prospective tenant approached them wanting to take over the building, the way the Office DepotMax company has been closing stores left and right in recent years. At that point it simply became a waiting game as to when this store would suddenly decide to liquidate and close, and apparently that happened very, very quietly this fall, with a pair of images posted to Google Maps in mid-October being my first and only alert that the closing sale must finally have begun. Less than a week later, the store was marked as permanently closed, meaning it must have shut its doors for the final time sometime between October 16th and 23rd, 2021. (cont.)

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
