Wisconsin Central Limited #17 is seen at Stevens Point, WI on August 12, 1988.

 

Perhaps with an obvious lineage, the #17 is former Milwaukee Road #992217. Having come to the Soo Line through their 1986 merger, this caboose remained on the former Soo Line property and was assumed by Wisconsin Central forces to have been included in the WCL transaction. As it turns out, the financial institution that held the lease did not approve of this and required that the caboose be returned to Milwaukee reporting marks and sent off property.

Milwaukee Road #992217 is seen at Minneapolis, MN on March 19, 1989.

 

Inherited as a part of the Milwaukee Road / Soo Line 1986 merger, this caboose remained on the former Soo Line property and was assumed by Wisconsin Central forces to have been included in the WCL transaction. The caboose was painted into WCL's attractive maroon and cream scheme and placed into service in early 1988 - even making an appearance in Trains Magazine's news section.

 

As it turns out, the financial institution that held the lease did not approve of the transfer to WCL and required that the caboose have its Milwaukee reporting marks restored and sent off property. A photo of this caboose in its original WCL scheme can be found here:

The last image featuring WC #17 / Milwaukee Road #992217 for a while is this 'gem' taken on October 4, 1988. The glinty light clearly acknowledges the former owner's number atop the bay. A reminder of the Milwaukee lineage, and the frugalness of Wisconsin Central in its early years.
