BR found the single vehicle Plasser & Theurer OBW8 General Purpose Maintenance Vehicle delivered in 1975 a success despite no follow up orders it was followed by its bigger brother the OBW10, with BR ordering 3 in 1982-83.

The OBW10 was what can only be described as a "Super Trolley" being a two car unit with a powered vehicle and trailer encompassing all the latest features like crew cab, crane and large stowage area for materials. It was no surprise under the 1987 regrouping of the DX 68xxx Trolleys these machines were moved to the DX 98xxx General Purpose Machines group. From the outset the OBW10 designation by Plasser & Theurer was purely a model type as BR always referred to them as G.P.TRAMM's (General Purpose Track Repair And Maintenance Machines). They carried a single number with the powered end designated vehicle 'A' and the trailer 'B'. They could run at 45mph and had the ability to be hauled within a train although such moves were rare. So successful was the design that BR placed three further orders between 1984 & 1988 totaling another 18 units. The final order for 9 placed in 1988 saw them delivered with DR prefixed numbers (DR 98213 to DR 98221) thus being reportable on TOPS.

DR 98217A+B (Plasser 53194/1988) from the final batch is seen here being fueled from a drum in the Workshop Yard at Ashford CCE Plant Depot.

Quoting New York TImes | Robert T. McCall, Space Artist, Dies at 90 March 5, 2010:

Robert T. McCall, Space Artist, Dies at 90

By DOUGLAS MARTIN

Published: March 5, 2010

Robert T. McCall, an artist whose fervor for space exploration found expression in his six-story-tall mural at the National Air and Space Museum and two postage stamps canceled on the Moon, died on Feb. 26 in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 90.

The cause was heart failure, his wife, Louise, said.Mr. McCall eagerly translated his youthful enthusiasm for drawing knights in shining armor on spirited steeds into paintings of intrepid astronauts in gleaming space vehicles, both real and imagined. When NASA in 1962 hit on the idea of enlisting artists to promote its mission, Mr. McCall was one of the first three chosen.

He went on to create hundreds of vivid paintings, from representations of gleaming spaceships to futuristic dream cities where shopping centers float in space. His most famous image may be the gargantuan mural, showing events from the creation of the universe to men walking on the Moon, on the south lobby wall of the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington. More than 10 million people a year pass it.

Or it might be his painting showing a space vehicle darting from the bay of a wheel-shaped space station, which was used in a poster for Stanley Kubrick’s landmark 1968 film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Then there are the mission patches he made for astronauts, including one for the last men to walk on the Moon; the many paintings that hang in military buildings from the Pentagon to the Air Force Academy; and the enormous mural at the Johnson Space Center in Houston showing the progression of the American space program, from the first Mercury missions to the space shuttle.

He also designed more than a dozen stamps for the United States Postal Service, and a set was ceremoniously canceled on the lunar surface by David Scott, commander of the Apollo 15 mission.

H. Lester Cooke, former curator of painting at the National Gallery of Art, once noted that Mr. McCall had “the quality and scope of imagination to travel in space, and carry us along with him.” Isaac Asimov was widely quoted as calling Mr. McCall “the nearest thing we have to an artist in residence in outer space.”

NORFOLK, Va. – A Notice of Intent (NOI) will be published in the Federal Register on October 10, 2014, announcing the Navy’s intent to revise the scope of the ongoing Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for EA-18G Growler airfield operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island and to announce public scoping meetings. The EIS will now address the environmental impacts associated with the potential addition of up to 36 EA-18G Growler aircraft.

Last September, the Navy began an EIS to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the addition of two new expeditionary squadrons and additional Growler aircraft to the training squadron. Scoping was conducted between September 2013 and January 2014 on that proposed action, and open house scoping meetings were held in December 2013 to discuss the proposal.

During spring 2014, the Chief of Naval Operations submitted an Unfunded Requirements List as part of the President’s Budget for Fiscal Year 2015 that included a request to purchase 22 additional Growler aircraft. While it is unclear whether more Growlers will ultimately be procured, the Navy is electing to analyze the potential for these aircraft in order to be proactive and transparent. Therefore, a new scoping process is needed and has been initiated based on the proposed action.

To meet current and future mission and training requirements, the Navy proposes to: (1) continue and increase the existing VAQ operations at NAS Whidbey Island’s Ault Field and OLF Coupeville; (2) increase VAQ capabilities and augment the training squadron by adding up to 36 aircraft to support an expanded Department of Defense mission for identifying, tracking, and targeting in a complex electronic warfare environment; (3) construct and renovate facilities at Ault Field to accommodate additional aircraft; and (4) station additional personnel and their family members to NAS Whidbey Island and the surrounding community.

The Navy will host three open-house scoping meetings to provide members of the public with the opportunity to review project-related information, ask questions of Navy representatives, and submit comments on the scope of the analysis and content to be addressed in the EIS. Each of the meetings will be informal and consist of information stations staffed by Navy representatives. The meetings will be conducted between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on the following dates and locations:

The city, state and 5-digit zip code of individuals who provide comments may be released.

Comments may be submitted anytime during the public comment period which will run through November 24, 2014.

NOTICE TO MEDIA: Members of the media are invited to participate in a media availability Monday, October 27, to discuss all aspects of the Environmental Impact Statement with Navy subject matter experts. Broadcast media will be afforded the opportunity to obtain b-roll of Growler operations as well. RSVP to U.S. Fleet Forces Environmental Public Affairs Officer Ted Brown (757-836-4427) or NAS Whidbey Island Public Affairs Officer Mike Welding (360-257-2962).

Miss this. Appreciate the defense of our way of life and some naval aviation action. Just makes me proud to be an American. Hopefully We the People can work out the land use issues around them Growlers I love so much.

As the sky was overexposed, decided to go into black & white. I really like dialing back the shutter speed to get prop blur when available and also blur the background to get motion. Looks exciting, fast and contrasty right? Like a picture that you'd want to buy, eh?

Artist : Eduard (unknown last name)

Days to Complete : Probably around 24 days, but laid on the jigsaw table for 40 days.

BG 2087

This one took a lot longer then I planned. I spent about two weeks painting the house and another two days repairing the awning in front of the pool so I may have only worked 24 days on it though it was on my puzzle table for nearly 40 days.

I liked the artwork and it wasn't that difficult but for some reason I just couldn't stay focused. I think it was because I couldn't find an audio book I enjoyed listening to. Finally I got hold of Dark Voyage by Alan Furst which is really good. After that I listened to Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now, which is Bill Gates favorite book about technology and civilization. I highly recommend both books.

Eeyore says the smoke from the California fires may have slowed me down. I told him "possibly but on the other hand it kept me inside the house".

My next puzzle will be Quilting Shed, which is another Buffalo Games 2000 piece jigsaw by the same artist. I chose it because I think Eduard is a very good artist and want to do more puzzles by him. Hopefully I can finish the next jigsaw faster than the last one.
