The temples of Khajuraho were built between 950 to 1050 A.D. during the Chandela dynasty of Central India (These rulers claimed descent from the moon, hence the name Chand-ela). After the decline of the Chandela dynasty in 13th century, the temples were left under the cover of dense date palm trees for many years, which gave the city of Khajuraho its name, Khajur in Hindi means a date. In the ancient times it was known as Vatsa.
In 1838, a British army engineer, Captain T.S. Burt rediscovered them. By that time only 22 of the original 85 temples had survived.
During the Chandela rule, many towns in Bundelkhand including Khajuraho were home to large and flourishing Jain communities. At Khajuraho the Jains apparently lived on the east side of town. A number of Jain temples from that period have survived in this part of Khajuraho in various states of preservation. Many Jain inscriptions from the Chandela period can be seen at Khajuraho. All the Jain temples are now enclosed within a compound wall constructed in early 20th century, with the exception of the Ghantai temple.
Two of the large temples - Parshvanath Temple and Adinath Temple - still stand in a good state of preservation.
The Adinath Temple contains an idol with an inscription dated Sam 1215 during the rule of Chandella king Madanavarman. Dedicated to Jain Tirthankar (God), adinath, the temple is lavishly embellished with sculpted figures, including yakshis.

**This mare was not previously listed as being registered, however it turned out that the papers that were believed to belong to 949 actually belonged to this mare. Her age has been edited to reflect the age listed on her papers.

Arthur Hacker (1858-1919)
At the start of his career Hacker specialised in scenes depicting the poor and country life, but later he concentrated on literary and religious themes. Her, realism and spirituality are blended, as was recognized by critics when the painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1891. Particularly commented on was the artiest's treatment of the figure of Christ, mean and even emaciated. Although the scene is set in the carpenter's shop where Christ worked as a young man, the Bible makes no mention of him ever meeting Mary Magdalen there. Hacker appears therefore to have invented the episode or re-staged one from later in Christ's life, as if to draw attention to his artistic freedom to manipulate sources, no matter how supposedly sacred they might be.
