After trekking the trails counting bluebirds and maintaining the nest boxes for two or three years, I got to know a couple of the birds, not by sight, but by behavior that didn't change from year to year.
This is "Jules," named after a golden palomino who I met (with his servant, Bob) almost every time I was out on the trails. Jules was the resident of 21C, the number I gave the box after I lost 21 and 21B. (Never did find them again). Almost every time, I approached the nest box, he would fly up to a branch in the oak or sycamore and would observe me until I was done. When I was about 20 feet away and on my way to #22, he would return to the box, inspect the inside, and them come out an perch on the top. And he did that year after year. He came through early and was at 21C for at least three years.
Though they are year-round residents of this part of California, they would disperse into the oaks and grasslands, and wouldn't show up again until the following March (early) or May (late). You might think that a thrush would have a melodious song, but all I ever heard was a chirping 5-8 times. Nothing distinctive enough for me until my sixth year on the trail, and then I could distinguish it from other nesting birds in mid- to late spring.
We finally had a warm hazy Saturday and Amanda and Rachel and I spent a day out searching for abandoned houses and cars, and lupins.
I would like to say thanks to all my friends for visiting and highly appreciated your comments and FAVES!!
Lors d'un séjour en Thaïlande, j'ai découvert le sourire, la gentillesse des Thaï, les sculptures de Boudha.
