I always have very happy associations with railway stations but they can be scenes of sadness; saying good bye to a loved one, waiting for someone who doesn't show, making a journey alone.

This is a shot I've had in mind for sometime but normally with the Mk4 sets the loco ends up under the bridge. This evening I was lucky and the set was short formed by one coach.

it is 9/11

it is 7 years later

it is 9:03

7 years ago i heard the planes hit

the magnitude of everything that was lost on that day

is still overwhelming

at the time i dealt with the shock and the grief by creating theARTproject

a site where people could express their reactions

and communicate with others

using images instead of words

Virgin Trains East Coast 91108 works 1D23 17:03 Kings Cross-Leeds past Claypole on 25/07/17. After several years as a spares donor, 91108 was sent for scrap in March 2022.

Having just left the confines of Stoke Tunnel, 91108 is seen continuing north at the head of 1S23 1530 Kings X to Edinrbugh and is captured passing the site of the former High Dyke Jn.

Both these locos have been scrapped - 91108 in May 2022 and 91104 in March 2022 at C F Booths in Rotherham.

I Think We’re Alone Now

‘And so we're running just as fast as we can’

‘I think we're alone now

There doesn't seem to be anyone around’

Only, they weren’t quite! And the Class 91s don’t run quite as fast as they can (service speed 125mph, design speed 140mph)!

So why the song? Well, it was number one in the charts 30 years ago today, and that was the date GEC Transportation Limited unveiled 91001 to the press at Crewe Works.

There’s a Channel 4 TV documentary about the design and building of the locomotives here:

youtu.be/VvsIYaRmRAM

The locomotive incorporated many innovative features, including being one of the first in the UK to make extensive use of microprocessor control. The mechanical design was highly ingenious, with the GEC G426AZ traction motors suspended from the body in order to reduce the un-sprung mass.

The locomotives have certainly put in sterling service on some of the most demanding trains in the country, with most daily diagrams seeing the locos cover over 1000 miles at average speeds of over 100 mph.

I was hoping to see 91101 at the station this morning but ‘I Should be so Lucky’, that track was the number one record the following week, so maybe I’ll have better luck then!

91108 prepares to leave York with the 06:30 Newcastle to London King’s Cross service of 12th February 2018.

Reported as stored at Doncaster and being stripped of parts is 91108. This UID seems to be a class 91 due to it being fitted with sand boxes - why would a DVT have them, so presumed to be 91108.

Not sure where to end this. At the start of the month 3 91s had been withdrawn from service, 2 and Leicester for export and 91108 for stripping for spares at Doncaster. In the month two more locos have run their last service 91132 and 91104. I believe they are due to head to Leicester from Bounds Green tomorrow.

The news this week is that LNER are retaining the 91s until December 2021 and passengers can enjoy their use.

91108s final run North. Its due to be removed from traffic tonight. All usable components will be stripped at Doncaster, then whats left will be scrapped.

Soon to be withdrawn from service with LNER 91108 heads past Broad Fen Lane Claypole working 1S28 18:00 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh on the 21/7/19

91108 departing York for the final time. The driver certainly tested the air horns to the max.

Apparently according to the list 91108 is the first of three 91's to be withdrawn at the end of next month. So with time ticking for this loco, it is seen at Welwyn North with the 1S07 0800 London Kings Cross - Edinburgh 15/6/19.
