Silvestri Craters at Mt Etna, Catania, Sicily, Italy.

Mount Etna is Europe's highest and most active volcano. Towering above the city of Catania on the island of Sicily, it has been growing for about 500,000 years and is in the midst of a series of eruptions that began in 2001. It has experienced a variety of eruption styles, including violent explosions and voluminous lava flows. More than 25% of Sicily's population lives on Etna's slopes, and it is the main source of income for the island, both from agriculture (due to its rich volcanic soil) and tourism.

It's 2009!

Sydney always puts on a good show. This year the programme was titled "Creation". This photo is pretty much the last wave of fireworks (i.e. last seconds) of the whole show. Incidentally, there are no clouds in the sky; what you see is smoke from the $5m worth of crackers. About 1.5m people turned out to see it in person.

This pic made the flickr blog (http://blog.flickr.net/en/2008/12/31/happy-2009/) and Explore, which explains why it accumulated more views compared to many of the more-worthy shots from the same event.
