Oakway SD60 #9001 leads Santa Fe SD40 5013 and a pair of Burlington Northern engines, SD60m 9272 and C30-7 5583 on a Southbound loaded coal train in January of 1994. This location is just South of Academy siding on Colorado's Joint Line. It is traveling on the ex-D&RGW mainline as Santa Fe's track, which ran a mile or so to the East was abandoned due to the many road crossings that line had through Colorado Springs.

We woke up in Coalville, Utah on a very cold but clear Wednesday morning arriving very late the previous night after driving from Cheyenne, Wyoming. "The Chief" and I were on our way to California, and we headed west to Salt Lake City. As we came down out of the Wahsatch Mountains the nice morning turned into a miserable foggy mess. We blew SLC off and kept heading south and by Provo it wasn't any better. So I suggested heading back up into the higher elevations along the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad with the goal of possibly catching a Utah Railway coal train going over Soldier Summit. A while later we found ourselves in Martin, just outside of Helper, Utah. The skies were pretty much cloudless with fairly fresh snow on the ground. And lucky us, a coal train was just coming off the branch and we knew this would be an epic chase with recently rebuilt SD40’s.
The highway closely follows the road west so we filled our bucket with "guardrail shots" such as this west of Castle Gate.
