Before the closure of Leeds depot, the three routes run by Yorkshire Tiger to Leeds Bradford Airport were predominantly in the hands of purpose built Optare Versas and refurbished Scania Omnicities, all decorated in 'Flying Tiger' livery. More recently, since the relocation to a new depot in Idle, four Wright Cadets from the Tiger Blue branch of the company have been drafted in as spares. And future buses would appear to be ADL E200s, as an order has been placed for new buses as part of the contract renewal. Double Deckers on the airport routes, however, are a thing of the past. It was always requested by the Airport that the route be run be single decks only, but occasionally when needs must or nothing else was available, the deckers would appear. From my experience, more so in the evenings. Perhaps it was hoped that under the cover of darkness, nobody would notice... New to Greater Manchester South in August 1997 as fleet number 899, this vehicle was later numbered 20899 (R899 XVM) in the Stagecoach national fleet number scheme. After internal transfer in the Stagecoach UK fleet from the Manchester division to Merseyside & South Lancashire, this vehicle was eventually sold outside of the Group fleet to ClassicBus North West. It has now been acquired for preservation and restoration, and presently wears Stagecoach's Magic Bus livery.
Stagecoach Cumbria & North Lancashire celebrated its 22nd annual family open day in Carlisle on Saturday 27th May 2017. The event offers the opportunity to explore behind the scenes at one of the North West's biggest depots between 10am - 4pm, and see a variety of historic buses, both past and present.
Refreshment stalls were on-site, offering a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and ice cream. Inside the workshop area there were stalls trading in transport related items; although aimed at transport enthusiast, they will be of general interest to all.
For younger visitors there was stalls with toys and models, the opportunity to get their photo taken with their name in lights on the front of a bus, and rides through the bus wash too!
