It's not a UP 4-8-4, but a Burlington Northern F7A. No. 844 is leading the Everett Turn northbound south of Kent, Wash. on July 5, 1979.

After a successful rebuild, Union Pacific's famed FEF-3 #844 returned to excursion service pulling the 2016 addition of the Cheyenne Frontier Days special between Denver, CO and Cheyenne, WY. Having highballed Denver right on the advertised the big ALCO has command of 22 passenger cars as it storms across Sand Creek in Commerce City with the downtown Denver skyline in the distance.

The famous Northern-class engine (4-8-4 wheel arrangement) is en route to Boise, ID. Today's run from Rock Springs to Pocatello was a treat with 844 running solo; no diesel assist as has become standard procedure in recent years.
UP 844 leads the Boise Turn west across the Snake River at appropriately named American Falls, ID on the Nampa Subdivision. Several things came together to make this a very memorable photo. First, it was socked in cloudy right up until about 10 minutes before the train's arrival. Second, the flow of the Snake through here is tremendous as the Corps of Engineers has all the gates open to deal with the runoff that resulted from record levels of snow in this part of the country. Third, the classic 4-8-4 Northern on a rare excursion made this an unforgettable shot. If you could only hear the 844's whistle in this photo!

The photo runby crowd is getting the shot on an NRHS excursion which ran from Grand Island to Valley and return. Bill Hanson and I were working on the train as car attendants. I could not think of a better way to spend the day on my 34th birthday.
