Western Grebe Pair (Aechmophorus occidentalis)

Western Grebes partake in some of the most interesting and complex courtship displays in the birding world.
There are two main displays, which are commonly referred to as ceremonies because each involves a specific set of behaviors. The two most obvious are the Weed Ceremony and the Rushing Ceremony, but there are also less pronounced behaviors that often go unnoticed.
In this image the pair is running along the top of the water in the "Rushing Ceremony". I'm not sure if it's known to help pair bonding or if it's simply a challenge of some sort. Since two males may sometimes preform this ritual, it may be a way of attracting the female Grebes attention.

I thought the contrast between the foreground and the mountains in the background was very stark. I like that the image is split in half with the contrasted tones. The foreground would look just like this in summer.
Deadvlei
Close to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei is a clay pan characterized by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded and the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. However, the climate changed and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area. The trees are estimated to be approximately 900 years old, however they have not decomposed due to the dry climate.
Deadvlei is a paradise for photographers as the contrast between the pitch-black trees and bleached-white pans, and the rusty-red dunes and deep blue sky make for incredible images. Deadvlei is at least 1km walk from the parking lot so be sure to take drinking water with you..

Oh the stories I could tell from my adventures in these two buildings from decades ago. Downtown Cheyenne by the town square.
I visited RSPB Bempton Cliffs on14th August for the first time. It is an amazing place to see & photograph sea birds.
Too late for Puffins, Razor Bills & Guillimotts but, the Gannets & Kittiwakes are still around in numbers with some Gannet chicks still very young.
