A female Kalij Pheasant walks softly amongst the brush in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Kalij pheasant were introduced to Hawaii as recently as 1962. In Hawaii they exist only on the Big Island and are plentiful in the Volcanoes National Park area. They frequently travel in pairs, male and female, or in small groups with several males and a female. They are monogamous but male hatchlings may stay with the parents and help rear subsequent generations. What is unclear to me is why they were introduced to the island at all and to what end? Though they are not listed as an invasive species we already know just how unpredictable things can be.
