Reading Buses 822, YN06JWF, an East Lancs Omnidekka bodied Scania N94UD seen in Reading with a 16 service.

Three years and one week since my only other photo of this vehicle, here is TrentBarton Versa 822 departing Nottingham up Mansfield Road with a Threes to Mansfield on 28.3.22
Although I said before that it was great that the Threes Versas have lasted so long, the more I've seen (and heard) of them, the more it becomes apparent that they are kind of old and battered now. Any great load on the engine is usually accompanied by the 'hoover' noise, or more often the distinctive, high-pitched sound of slipping auxiliary belts. Also, with the same 4 cylinder Merc engine as a smaller Solo, acceleration was never going to be amazing, but they do appear so incredibly slow getting away from the traffic lights up Mansfield Road and stops on other hilly sections.
My knowledge of the various TrentBarton garages is limited, but Sutton Junction is clearly bottom of the pile when it comes to fleet renewal. Of course, that's great for its concentration of Solars and various mid-life Optares (and 462), but when it comes to one of the ex-Rainbow routes you would think it deserves better than some tired, ten year old Versas that, afaik, haven't even had a refurbishment in that time.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with having a ten year old bus on what is meant to be a 'flagship' route, but I've not encountered a single branded Threes bus that doesn't sound rough, and the nature of the route isn't exactly easy on the drivetrain either. Out of Nottingham City alone it's up and down three hills one after another and then each of the Threes A, B and C has to remain on-frequency for its whole length to integrate properly into the ten-minute intervals of the core route. As much as I like these buses and want to see them continue, I'm a little surprised TrentBarton haven't cascaded them onto lighter work (which they deserve after the service they've given) and stick some beefier 6cyl MMCs on the Threes.
Of course with anything, there are a number of reasons why a Threes fleet renewal may not have happened... maybe the route doesn't generate enough cash for eighteen new vehicles, an operational reason might prevent MMCs from running out of Sutton garage, plans for new vehicles could've been shelved during the pandemic, or maybe they simply thought that if the Versas have lasted this long then there's no reason to say they can't last longer.
Given TrentBarton's current lack of new purchases, I can only assume they are waiting for a bite of some ZEBRA meat before they go making their next orders. Their extensive, intensive and at times round-the-clock operation doesn't sit well with the characteristics of electric buses, so as yet I'm not sure what could actually kill the Threes Versas off, barring a surprise order for more diesel E200 MMCs. They could go down the path of hydrogen with the new Wright single deckers, but in terms of immediate new replacements that still doesn't leave anything.
