#1 Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Saturday 3/27/2011 @Cabaret Metro in Chicago

As a photographer, I looked forward to Portishead the most this year. I'd already taken a ton of dark grainy photos of Efrim Menuck already to be honest and I wasn't exactly looking forward to another grueling time of it. Yet, being the person I am, I couldn't resist taking them either. I saw all three nights of GY!BE in Chicago and the only reason why Sat. was the best was really because it was the longest-between 2 1/2 hours and 2hrs.45min. And, as much as I adore Portishead musically, Beth Gibbons couldn't compete with Godspeed. In another year, she would have been #1 but this time, it had to be GY!BE.

#2 Portishead: Tuesday, 10/13/2011 @ Aragon Ballroom in Chicago

Ah yes, this is probably what most people expected to be #1. Beth Gibbons was extremely high up there on my people to photograph before I die. Now, to tell you the truth, all that seems to be on that list is Bjork and a bunch of French recluses. This show was quite phenomenal and I was glad I decided to get back into the center of the venue after photographing the first 3 songs (where it sounded really great and there weren't people talking) I actually started to have a panic attack as I was entering the photopit because I'd been anticipating it for so long and I had to hit myself in the face several times to jolt my nervous system.

That is not an exaggeration.

#3 Julianna Barwick: Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park: Saturday, July 16th, 2011 in Chicago

People, rarely do I cry this hard on a Saturday morning without any tragedy involved. Seeing Julianna Barwick was something like a religious experience for me. If you get a chance, do see her! Amazing musician both live and on record.

#4 Besnard Lakes, Tomorrow Never Knows Festival at Lincoln Hall in Chicago: 1/13/2011

Though Besnard Lakes came back a second time this past year, this show was definitely the better one. The songs were still great and the performance exceptional for the latter one but the sound mix wasn't as good as this first one where they really blew me away. They've become an exceptional live band instead of merely just an accomplished one. Truly memorable, forceful at all the right moments and gentle still in the perfect remainders of the evening.

#5 A Place to Bury Strangers: Do Division Festival at Division Street and Damen Ave. in Chicago 6/5/2011

Awe is a word that comes to mind when I think about this powerful performance where I literally thought anything could easily happen. There was such excitement in the air combined with such thrilling and solid music behind it that it seemed like every cell in my body was literally scrambling like eggs...and I loved it.

#6 Blonde Redhead: Downtown Sound Series at Pritzker Pavillion in Millennium Park, Chicago 7/18/2011

There is something to be said about hearing a setlist that includes all of your favorite songs. You really can't beat that. When I first started seeing Blonde Redhead a decade ago, the band was downright creepy. They had virtually no stage presence and there was little difference between the record and the performance except the weird pseudo chemistry between Kazu and Amedeo. The years have made an improvement on the band live. Theirs is now a more mature sound and interaction style. They even brought mood lighting this time.

#7 The Flaming Lips perform The Soft Bulletin at Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, 7/7/2011

Keeping the confetti factories in business, The Flaming Lips returned to Chicago with their plethora of large sized balloons and lazer hands. Even more meaningful was the fact that they played one of my favorite albums from university that I never thought I'd be able to hear front to back live and I was very thrilled to see them both nights playing the album as if they had just released it only with a great deal of solid practice of the songs in a live context obviously. Well, they were excited and so was I!

#8 Woods at Subterranean in Chicago: 7/16/2011

I believe I saw Woods about 5x last year in two separate states. The photo in the montage is actually from Pfork fest and there was minimal difference between their set at SubT and their set at the fest except for the fact that SubT is a much smaller club and I could stay for the entire set as I was not running around. In any case, this band makes me so weak in the knees people. I think that Jeremy casts a spell on me every time whether he realizes it or not.

#9 Wild Flag at Subterranean in Chicago 7/23/2011

I'm pretty sure years from now, people will gather around and say, "I can't believe you saw Wild Flag in a venue that small. What was it like?" I'll probably just say "It was amazing!" Though, really if you see Carrie Brownstein play at any show, you are bound to see such amazing energy between her kicks and laying down on the stage. But there was even more anticipation for this show than any of the other shows they've played in Chicago by post Sleater Kinney fans and that also helped made it great. The crowd adored the band and the band knew it and seemed to play all the better for it.

#10 Low at Lincoln Hall in Chicago 4/21/2011

Both Low's show at Lincoln Hall and at Pritzker later on were something I will treasure and, truly, every time I see the band I have an acute pain in my chest out of love for their songs. The main difference is that the set at Lincoln Hall was slightly longer, which is why I am saying it deserves this spot in the list over the other night in Millennium Park.

#11 Yo La Tengo at Cabaret Metro in Chicago 2/4/2011

Some people remember this show much differently in that they were so annoyed that Ira, Georgia, and James spent about a half an hour re-enacting a Seinfeld episode (the one where they are all waiting at the Chinese restaurant) after a fan spun the wheel and chose this option. But those people were clearly missing the fun of seeing what great personalities the band has and relishing in the very enjoyable enactment. Oh, and the songs were great as usual too.

#12 Deerhunter at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago 7/17/2011

In some ways, it does feel a little wrong to place Deerhunter on this list, mainly because I missed about 10 minutes of their set photographing Toro y Moi (though, I swear I could hear Deerhunter the whole time from the other end of the field anyways). In any case, I decided that the fact that I missed a bit of the set wasn't the band's fault and what I did hear was fantastic as always, making the impression that they have truly come into their own greatness.

#13 Thee Oh Sees at Woodsist Fest at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, California 7/31/2011

Seeing Thee Oh Sees is ALWAYS great fun but the reason why this time was best out of the other times I saw them this year is that West Coasters don't really know how to mosh, even to incredibly energetic garage rock with two drummers and, to be honest, I like it that way. No, really, big 300 pound 6ft2 dude..you can keep your elbows and gut to yourself because I don't want them!

#14 Smith Westerns at Lollalooza in Grant Park in Chicago 8/05/2011

Here's another one that I was relishing in and had to leave midway through as my friend Brandon Lee can attest to. I thought I was going to melt into the ground and sob my eyes out. But, know that sometimes us concert photographers have to make our own sacrifices and instead of dwelling on it any farther, I'll say that I did manage to see most of this set and what I saw sent soundgasmic chills down my arms and legs. I will be at the Metro show on 2/3/2012 and boy will I be happypants then!

#15 Parenthetical Girls at Subterranean in Chicago 6/8/2011

I've waited about 5-6 years for this band to come back and, though their lineup has changed, it's still Zac Pennington that was and always will be the main crux of the band. This band is incredibly unique, always bizarre, perhaps a little scary to the casual music fan who prefers only soundtracks and accessible upbeat choruses. But, as in a great deal of deep art, you either get it or you don't and I feel very deeply that Zac Pennington is quite remarkable and fascinating. Also, no matter how small the venue or the crowd, Zac performs his heart out in a way that few can lay claim to.

Here's an interview I did with him in April while vacationing in Portland: www.bigtakeover.com/interviews/an-interview-with-zac-penn...

#16 Art Brut at the Double Door in Chicago 6/15/2011

Sometimes, every show seems less fun in comparison to one featuring the likes of Eddie Argos. Argos is candid, insightful, sometimes filled with an emanating genius with some jolly stage antics to boot. He has an amazing backup band but they'd be nothing without his witticisms on life that show forth in his music.

#17 White Fence at Woodsist Festival at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, California 7/31/2011

Those who know me are pretty confident in my love for psychedelic pop music. I loved Darker My Love and this newer incarnation White Fence but I had been disappointed when I saw them at The Empty Bottle earlier in the summer during the night of the freak summer hailstorm. This definitely made up for it as the band was in top form and was definitely one of the highlights of the festival.

#18 Dum Dum Girls at Empty Bottle in Chicago 2/25/2011

There is such a fantastic excitement that Dum Dum Girls bring to their shows every time but I preferred this set to their later one this year in the fall. There was just something that clicked here about the way they all sang and played together that impressed me more. Either way, the songs are always great and man, if you can stop being transfixed by their tights you are a stronger person than I.

Here's a larger sized diptych I did of the whole band:

#19 Andrew Bird at Hideout Block Party in Chicago

Ok, I admit it, part of the reason that I loved this show so much is because I photographed the whole set. I took well over 16gigs of photos and tbh haven't even looked at all of them yet. There are SO MANY PHOTOS! Anyhow, I have a real soft spot for Andrew Bird. The man enchants me with his delicious violin like an indie sorcerer...you've all heard of those, right?

#20 Karkwa at Schubas Tavern in Chicago on 12/6/2011

There isn't too much more I wanted to say about this show that hasn't been said in my review. Basically, I never thought Karkwa would ever come to Chicago and I was really ecstatic they made the trek out here. I was as impressed with their live show as I thought I would be, though their sound mix was not absolute perfection but was certainly miles better than most bands that play-basically, I'm being a little picky. I said many great things about them here with more photos:

#21 The Joy Formidable at Lincoln Hall in Chicago 4/5/2011

I was lucky enough to see this band twice this year and, though both times the band put on a stellar performance, I still prefer the show in a smaller venue 9x out of 10. In any case, Ritzy really knows how to own the stage and one can't help but be quite impressed just by watching her move. The sound the band conjures up with only three is just baffling.

#22 CSS at The Cabaret Metro in Chicago on 5/21/2011

Is there anyone more photogenic and unbelievable than Brazil's Lovefoxxx? Doubtful! The woman is a little bit insane and a great deal amazing. She had costume changes and jumped into the crowd, plus her songs are just downright fun!

#23 My Brightest Diamond in Pritzker Pavillion/Millenium Park, Chicago on 8/08/2011

I'm a huge fan of the very enchanting multi instrumentalist Shara Worden and I almost didn't get to this show as it seemed post Lolla exhaustion, storms, and close-by violence in the area were all conspiring against both her and I. I was really glad I did, though. Worden is one of those underrated super talented musicians that everyone should listen a great deal more to...I hope someday she gains more of he audience she deserves.

#24 The Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Lincoln Hall in Chicago 4/28/2011

I'm not a huge party person and I'm REALLY NOT a huge birthday person. My favorite thing to do on birthdays as well as Valentine's Day in particular is go to a show I like and forget about the rest of the awful world. Pains are always great but this was a little more special as they played on my birthday and, also, my friend Leigh told Kip and he said Happy Birthday to me from the stage. Aw!

#25 The Naked and the Famous at Cabaret Metro in Chicago 10/07/2011

This band's sound immediately impresses...they definitely have a rock influence but such a strong and catchy anthemic appeal. Ah, you Kiwis...! I enjoyed NATF both at Lolla and at this show and wrote a review of them with more photos here:

After getting wet and muddy all weekend and having probably close to 10,000 photographs to still look through from Lollapalooza that just ended, I braved the Monday storms and the close vicinity violence (a man was shot in the head on State and Wabash yesterday close to the Wilco/Marina Towers) to go see My Brightest Diamond perform with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. I was really glad I did when I saw her walk out wearing this. Even more importantly, she sounded divine.
