The Arraiolos Castle is a massive medieval fortress which sits on Monte de San Pedro, a hill north of the present town of Arraiolos. Castelo Arraiolos was built by order of King D. Dinis in the early 1300's, but the site itself is believed to have been a prehistoric settlement dating to 300BC. We took a hike up the tower steps and get a great view over the valley.
Seeing some sprout up here and there, after a bit of rain.
Not sure what these are. The orange makes me think of jack-o-lantern mushrooms, but I can only find pics of mature ones.
I love the velvety texture of the caps.
After spending the morning cycling along the Lachine Canal in Montreal I headed west on Highway 401 and went direct to Newtonville, east of Toronto, and went to Lovekin siding on the CPR's Belleville Sub.
The Belleville Sub crosses a road at grade here but there is a bridge over CN's Kingston Sub which runs parallel to the CP.
Thanks to a tip on Facebook I knew that there was a westbound on CN with the GTW heritage unit leading (ironically I had seen this train in the morning while cycling but did not know that it was train #307 and would be bypassing the yard in Montreal).
I could hear a train approaching and I hedged my bets and set up on the CN. When it finally became apparent that it was a CP train I had to make a quick sprint to the CP side.
