... Plants that are in flower. Chosen by Paul Goodhall MM3JFM Paul Goodhall.
The Blackthorn blossom is doing well in the car park, (my nature reserve). There isn't as much as usual this year, as the trees all had a good pruning at the end of last year. It was needed.

7th April 2021:
Sunny again today, but still very cold. I sat in the garden with Izzy for a short time this morning and saw one of our Collared Doves in the neighbouring apple tree.
Thankfully I'd taken my camera out with me and managed three photos, this being the one that came out the best. A bit too far for a real clean photo.

I'll catch up with everyone tomorrow, a bit busy this evening. :O)
The photo it’s self is two photos taken minutes apart one with a 24mm lens and the second a 400mm this elaborates the size of the moon. Taken 7thApril as the park closes at 9 and tonight’s moon won’t be in this position until 9.30 tonight.
Stay Safe
7th April 2020:
Having had a very bad night what with one thing and another I wasn't up to very much today. Graham nipped down to the little "superette" to get some shopping and I suggested getting some fruit. Huh, almost nothing in and what there was, was very over priced, other than these bananas which are going to need eating pretty fast.
But, at least it's some fruit for the time being and we both like them, which is the main thing. I can see banana custard coming up - one his favourites!

Stabled at Derby on the evening of the 7th April 2017 is 56303.
Locomotive History
56303 was originally 56125 and was built at Crewe Works, entering traffic in October 1983. Less than sixteen years later in February 1999 it was withdrawn, however after seven years languishing awaiting disposal in 2006 freight operator Jarvis Fastline returned 56125 to service following an overhaul as 56303. In 2009 Jarvis withdrew 56303 due to a downturn in traffic and it was returned to RVEL at Derby. 56303 is now owned and operated by BARS as a result of the purchase of Hanson Traction at the end of 2010.

Not long before lunch the sun came out, so to avoid taking a photo of our Sunday lunch, I nipped over the road.
Found this Wild Violet on a garden wall and decided it would do for today's photo.
Sorry I'll catch up with you tomorrow. We have a very unhappy Izzy. :0(

An ex works 40003 drifts through Crewe light engine on the 7th April 1979.
Locomotive History
In 1955 British Railways ordered ten type 4 locomotives from English Electric as part of the prototype diesel locomotive evaluation program. Three years later in March 1958, the first locomotive D200 emerged from the English Electric Vulcan Foundry works at Newton-Le-Willows and by September all ten had been delivered. D200 – D206 were allocated to Stratford MPD and employed on Great Eastern duties between London Liverpool Street to Cambridge, Ipswich and Norwich. With the introduction of the class 47’s on Great Eastern duties, the class 40’s soon found themselves delegated to secondary passenger duties and eventually settled down to a mix of secondary passenger trains, summer holiday trains, parcel traffic and heavy freight trains. By the mid 1970’s 40003 had migrated to the London Midland Region allocated to the Longsight. Class 40 withdrawals had commenced in 1976 although as can be seen classified repairs were still being authorized on the more fortunate members of the class as late as 1980. The classified repair just received by 40003 would keep it in traffic until September 1982 when it was withdrawn from Healey Mills MPD. Following withdrawal it would languish at Stratford (its first depot) for a while before finally reaching Doncaster Works were it was broken up in January 1984.

Standing in what is now part of the expanded station car park at Leicester is local pilot engine 08697, 7th April 1976. In 1976 these sidings formed part of the parcels depot and the grey building in the background was the Royal Mail depot. The vehicle (possibly 87263) next to 08697 although branded Express Parcels started out as an Insulated “Blue Spot” Fish Van. Just over a thousand of these long wheelbase (15 feet) four wheeled vans were built at Faverdale, Darlington between 1954 and 1961 for the then extensive express fish traffic from the fish ports. With the decline in this traffic, bought about by both fish quotas and road haulage around six hundred of these vehicles were from 1968 allocated to parcels traffic. It is also a measure of the decline in parcels traffic that in 1976 there were over five thousand non passenger coaching stock vehicles in service for this traffic, in 2012 there are just a few class 325 EMU’s.
Locomotive History
08697 was built at Horwich works as D3864 and entered traffic in December 1959 allocated as part of a batch of four class 08’s (D3862/63/64/65) to Derby MPD. Interestingly Derby works were also building class 08’s at this time (D3798/99, D3800/01) however instead of allocating these to Derby MPD these were allocated to Stoke MPD. D3864 remained at Derby May 1969 when it transferred to Saltley. Four months later in September 1969 it transferred to Leicester, however in December 1971 it was transferred back to Saltley only to be transferred back to Leicester a month later in January 1972 and I suspect that 3864 never actually left Leicester. At the end of 1984 it entered Swindon works for classified repair and emerged in December 1984 dual train brake fitted and allocated to Toton. It remained a Toton engine through out the rest of the 1980’s until returning to Derby in the early 1990’s. 08697 was stored at Derby Etches Park depot in May 1997 and has remained dumped around its precincts until the 2nd July 2010 when it was towed across to the RTC site for repair (with 08536 providing spares) by RVE. However this did not take place and it was broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham in November 2014.

37800 waiting to depart Derby working 5Q72 Derby Litchurch Lane - Wembley Yard with Southeastern 375902 (fresh from Litchurch Lane Works following overhaul) in tow, 7th April 2017.
Locomotive History
37800 was originally D6843 and was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry Works, entering traffic on the 29th May 1963, allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD. In August 1966 it headed north for Scotland and would spend the next eight years generally on freight duties in the Scottish lowlands allocated initially Polmadie and later Eastfield. At the end of 1974 it was back to South Wales with transfer to initially Landore and then within a couple of weeks to Cardiff Canton. On the 29th January 1975 whilst departing Marine Colliery with a coal train bound for Llanwern steel works, 37143 went through the a set of trap points, incorrectly set by the shunter, and continued through the stopblock and down the embankment stopping just short of the river Ebbw, thankfully the train crew escaped with minor injuries. 37143 would spend the next six months here until finally recovered from the bottom of an embankment on the 4th August 1975 after two previous attempts had been unsuccessful. It was transferred to Tinsley in February 1977, Immingham in November 1977 and Stratford in May 1984 before entering Crewe Works for refurbishment in March 1986 and emerged in September 1986 as 37800, allocated to Cardiff. It was transferred to Immingham in 1993, Stewarts Lane in 1994, Eastleigh in 1997 and Toton in 1998 prior to being sent overseas to France for infrastructure duties in August 1999. It returned from France in July 2000 and departed for Spain for further infrastructure duties a year later in August 2001 operated by GIF and numbered L33. After eleven years in Spain it returned to the UK in September 2012 and following overhaul it was re-instated to traffic in May 2016
43301 is the rear power car of 1E73, 17:25 Plymouth – Leeds standing in platform 1 at Derby, 7th April 2017.
Locomotive History
43301 was built at Crewe Works as 43101 and entered service in October 1978. It was one of a batch of sixty six power cars built to power thirty two, eight coach HST sets for Eastern Region services and was initially formed as part of set 254023. Following the completion of ECML electrification 43101 was one of twenty eight class 43 power cars allocated to the Western Region although it was allocated to the pool for West Coast Main Line services between Euston and Holyhead. The HST sets for these West Coast services were supplied by the Western Region and the services commenced in September 1991. In April 1992 it transferred into the general Western Region power car pool and this was followed by a transfer into the Cross Country pool in May 1995 allocated to Laira. In September 2003 it was placed in store at MOD Bicester and remained in store for almost five years until the summer of 2008 when it re-engineered at the Brush Works, Loughborough had its original Paxman Valenta engine replaced by a MTU unit. It re-entered service on the Cross Country duties in July 2008 re-numbered 43301.
86023 threads its way through Crewe station with a northbound express, 7th April 1979.
Locomotive History
Originally E3152 it was built by English Electric at there Vulcan Foundry works in 1966 and became 86023 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme, 86323 when fitted with modified wheels in the early 1980’s, 86423 when fitted with improved suspension in the late 1980’s and finally 86623 when dedicated to freight traffic and had its Electric Train Heating isolated, and maximum speed reduced to 75mph in the early 1990’s. In November 2003 86623 was stored at Crewe EMD, in need of a B exam that was not authorised. Since then it has remained in store with a period in Basford Hall yard before moving across to Crewe LNWR depot for further storage. In early July 2009 86623 had its bogies removed and the locomotive dumped on the ground. The remains of 86623 were broken up on site at Crewe LNWR during the first week of January 2010.
86015 threads its way through Crewe station with a mixed bag of non passenger coaching stock (the first and third vehicles being of pre nationalisation design) on a northbound parcels working, 7th April 1979.
Locomotive History
Originally E3123 it was built in 1965 at Doncaster and became 86015 in the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme, 86315 when fitted with modified wheels in the early 1980’s, 86415 when fitted with improved suspension in the late 1980’s and finally 86615 when dedicated to freight traffic and had its Electric Train Heating isolated, and maximum speed reduced to 75mph in the early 1990’s. On the 16th March 2005 86615 caught fire near Colchester whilst working 4M59 Felixstowe - Trafford Park in multiple with 86637. The damage was serious and terminal as 86615 was withdrawn in April 2005 and broken up by Ron Hull, Rotherham in July 2007.
HELP REQUIRED _ An unidentified class 25 with bodyside numbers stands at the London end of the Up Slow platform at Nuneaton, 7th April 1976.
As can be seen below this class 25 has been identified as Bescot allocated 25256 and my thanks to Steve Robinson
Locomotive History
25256 was originally D7606 and was part of a batch of thirteen locomotives (D7598 - 7610) destined for Tinsley (41A), being released to traffic during March 1966. In December 1966 it moved to Scotland (Haymarket) where it remained until returning south in June 1969 to the Nottingham Division (Toton). For the next seven years it was regularly transferred between the major London Midland depots until settling down in May 1976 at Cricklewood. Its final transfer was in July 1983 when it moved to Crewe and it was withdrawn in April 1985. Following withdrawal 25256 was stored at Crewe Gresty Lane until moved to Doncaster works in January 1986. It moved to Swindon works in March 1986 and was broken up during October 1986.
Coming off the Midland at Acton Wells Junction on diesel power is class 73 Electro-diesel 73005 hauling a string of 3 plank open wagons, 7th April 1976.
Locomotive History
73005 was originally E6005 and was one of the prototype batch of six locomotives built by British Railways (using equipment supplied by English Electric) at Eastleigh works in 1962. After a career of nearly forty years (the last few based at Birkenhead for Merseyrail shunting and departmental duties) it was withdrawn in December 2001 and sold for preservation. It is currently (August 2011) located at the Severn Valley Railway.

84004 is stabled in the Down yard at Nuneaton, 7th April 1976.
Locomotive History
Ten locomotives of class 84 were built between 1960 and 1961 by the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow with electrical equipment by GEC, as part of British Railway's policy to develop a standard electric locomotive. 84004 was originally E3039. In the early years the locomotives were troubled by bad ride quality and also by major problems with the water cooled mercury arc rectifiers and by 1963 the whole class was recalled for modifications. The problems with the water cooled mercury-arc rectifiers continued, resulting in the entire class being stored in 1968. Reprieved by the northward extension of the West Coast Main Line electrification, the class were refurbished at Doncaster works and returned to service by the end of 1972. Unfortunately, the troubles were not over and tap changer failures together with traction motor failures resulting from years in storage caused the reliability of the class to plummet. Work to correct these faults was initially successful, but the traction motors continued to fail and by 1976, BR curtailed any further large expenditure on the class. Excessive wear on the axle drives caused the first withdrawals (a result of the curtailment of expenditure) in 1977 with 84004 being the third member of the class to be withdrawn in November 1977. It was eventually broken up by the Bird Group, Long Marston over seven years after withdrawal in March 1985.

47488 departs Crewe with an express for North Wales formed of Mark I coaching stock. 7th April 1979.
Locomotive History
Originally D1713 it was built at Loughborough and entered traffic allocated to Oxley MPD on the 28th January 1964. Apart from a two year spell (May 1964 – April 1966) on the Western Region it would be a Birmingham based locomotive for its first twenty one years until transferred to Crewe in November 1985. It was withdrawn by BR still allocated to Crewe in October 1993 and then sold to Waterman Railways who returned it to traffic. Sold to Fragonset and repainted in two tone green it remained in traffic on miscellaneous duties until the end of 2003 when it was stopped due to lack of TPWS fitment. Since being stopped it has languished mainly at Barrow Hill (apart from six months in 2007 at Carnforth) and latterly at Burton where it can be currently (June 2014) found.
Stratford allocated 47163 is stabled in the Down yard at Nuneaton, 7th April 1976.
Locomotive History
47163 was built by Brush, Loughborough as D1757 in 1964 and was the last Loughborough built class 47 to be built with vacuum train brakes only with the next locomotive on the Loughborough production line, D1758 being fitted with dual (air/vacuum) train brakes. The first Crewe built locomotive to be dual brake fitted from new was D1631 two months later. D1757 would have an interesting career and is still in existence. Intially allocated to the Western Region (Cardiff followed by spells at Landore and Bristol) it transferred to Stratford in December 1970. The Queen’s Silver Jubilee year of 1977 proved to be an eventful year for 47163 initially starting very well when, along with 47164 it was adorned with large Union Jacks on the bodysides as a part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations. However the year ended in disaster when in December 1977 it was involved in a collision with 83004 near Kensal Green Tunnel in north west London. 83004 was so seriously damaged that it was withdrawn from service immediately. The number 2 end of 47163 was severely damaged, both by the collision, and a subsequent fire, and it was on decision for a long time before repairs were eventually sanctioned and it was released back into traffic almost 2 years later, minus its Union Jacks. In October 1980 it transferred to York followed by a move to Tinsley before heading north to Scotland (Haymarket followed by Eastfield) in June 1981. Its next major change came in April 1984 when it emerged from Crewe works fitted with electric train heating equipment and renumbered 47610. It was transferred to the London Midland Region (Crewe with a spell at Bescot) in May 1985. Its next change was in April 1989 when it was fitted with twin fuel tanks, renumbered 47823 and transferred to Bristol. Transferred back to Crewe in March 1994 it was renumbered 47787 in October 1994 when fitted with remote control equipment for use parcel trains with driving trailers (PCV’s) and it settled down as a Crewe engine until transferred to Toton in January 2004 and was withdrawn nearly six months later in June 2004. Following withdrawal it was sold the West Coast Railway Company who overhauled and reinstated 47787 to traffic in August 2007 for charter train duties. It is currently (April 2015) still with the West Coast Railway Company however is stored unserviceable.
304045 is working Crewe – Liverpool local services on the 7th April 1979 and is seen here in one of the North bay platforms at Crewe.
Unit History
The class 304 electric multiple units were built for suburban use on the first phases of the West Coast Main Line electrification between Crewe and Manchester/Liverpool/Rugby. Originally classed as AM4 units, they were externally very similar to the class 305 and class 308 units built for the Great Eastern electrification and the class 504 Manchester – Bury units. Forty Five class 304 units were built by Wolverton Works, in three batches between 1960 and 1962. These units were arranged into four-car sets, consisting of: a Driving Trailer Brake Second Open, Trailer Composite, Motor Brake Second Open, and a Driving Trailer Second Open. In the early 1980s, a refurbishment program was carried out, this included the removal and scrapping of the Trailer Composite vehicles, reducing the units to three-car sets. Withdrawals commenced in 1992 and the last two sets (304002/033) were withdrawn in March 1996. All forty five units have been broken up with the last set (304021) succumbing to the cutters torch in November 2000

Heading west around the North London Line and approaching Acton Wells Junction is Cardiff allocated 47125 hauling a Freightliner train, 7th April 1976.
Locomotive History
47125 was built at the Brush Falcon works, Loughborough as D1715 and entered traffic in February 1964, allocated to Old Oak Common MPD briefly before being transferred to Oxley and then Crewe North before arriving back at Old Oak Common in March 1964. This would set the pattern for D1715 as it would appear regularly on the transfer list and spent time on the London Midland, Western and Eastern Regions. 47125 was twice scheduled for ETH conversion, but on both occasions the conversion was cancelled and the locomotive remained a class 47/0 right to the end. The first planned conversion was in 1974 which would have seen 47125 become 47548; the second was in 1987 with the allocated number of 47666, but the ETS programme was halted at 47665. The numbers 47548 and 47666 were never re-used. After over thirty three years service 47125 was withdrawn in October 1997. Following withdrawal it was dumped around Crewe until towed to Wigan CRDC in May 2001. Its stay at Wigan was relatively short as it was towed to EMR, Kingsbury in March 2002 and broken up a few weeks later in May 2002.
Praktica LTL, Orwochrome UT18
47069 and 47454 lean on the curve as they approach Crewe station with a train of coaches from the Chester lines, 7th April 1979. The train is an interesting formation, the lead vehicle is a Mark IIa/b/c SO (Second Open) and looks to be a strengthening addition to the rest of the rake which is made up of a Mark I BSK (Brake Second Corridor) or possibly a relatively rare BSO (Brake Second Open), five Mark I CK’s (Composite Corridor) and another Mark I BSK or BSO. This gives a high proportion of 1st class accommodation for an eight coach formation.
Locomotive History
47069 was originally D1653 and entered traffic on the 16th January 1965, allocated to Landore. It is still in existance today (April 2012) having been fitted with electric train heating in February 1986 (renumbered 47638), long range fuel tanks in November 1989 (renumbered 47845) and refurbished with a new engine and alternator in July 2002, becoming 57301. 47454 was originally D1574 and entered traffic on the 25th April 1964, allocated to Gateshead. It was not as fortunate as 47069 as it was withdrawn in January 1991 and broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham three years later in February 1994.

In the distance standing at a red signal is 222023 with 1B56, 15:05 Nottingham – St Pancras and the reason for this was a rather strange bit of railway operating as 66620 had just spent over five minutes stopped on the Up Main changing drivers. I assume this crew change was not known by the East Midlands Control Centre otherwise 66620 would have been routed via the Up Slow.
