12/7/16: Until spotting this image a few days ago I wasn't aware that it was also one of the 7Up UnCola paper billboards issued between 1969 and about 1975. I have two small 7Up UnCola "American Contemporary Graphics Exhibit" booklets featuring a simplified version of this image. The color is on the inside page and the black front cover is die-cut to expose the sunburst, leaves, snow flakes and flowers beneath. That booklet dates to late 1970 or early 1971 as best as I can discern.

There is no official title so I’ll nickname it: "7Up Sunburst Rainbow Flowers". It's a derivative (or possibly an unsigned original) of "UnCanny In Cans" (avail on eBay) signed by John Alcorn in 1969. John was one of the very first members of famed Push Pin Studios which was co-founded by Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, Reynold Ruffins & Edward Sorel

3/12/18: Note: a 60”x36” Subway Size “B” poster of “UnCanny In Cans” will be marketed soon. Contact me if interested. The edges have some minor repairable issues but I’d grade it at a B or B+ condition.

2/6/17: Just arrived is a 28.25" x 16.5" poster that's the ONLY KNOWN COMPLETE COLOR COPY of this image in ANY size. It came from the estate of a 7Up executive. Two other posters in the same size and kind of frames were acquired from the same source and they are both definitely printer's proofs. Unfortunately, this poster was trimmed to just the central image but it's highly likely that the printer's proof markings were removed 48 years ago before being framed and matted.

I also own 4 of the 12 left side panels that make up a partial 21'x10' billboard of this image.

1970 7Up "Turn Un" TV ad:

The only other instance of this image is a B&W thumbnail image from a small American Contemporary Graphics Booklet produced in late 1970 or early 1971 for a traveling exhibition.

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/8387105130/in/album-72...

This was the 5th 21'x10' billboard design issued in 1969 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back of the top left panel A1 lists this as [Design] DES 69-5, C-2692. Pat Dypold illustrated the bulk of the 53+ 7Up UnCola billboard images issued between 1969 and the mid-1970's. Her signature is in the bottom right, next to the rim of the glass. At least 1 copy each of roughly half of those original billboards have been gathered into my collection and saved from destruction or the trash heap, usually one at a time.

The first 5 of 53 billboards were:

DES 69-1, C-2589, "# Un In The Sun" Pat Dypold (bikini girl)

DES 69-2, C-2587, "Butterfly & Bottle", Pat Dypold

DES 69-3, C-2588, "Un & Un Is Too", Kim Whitesides (guitars)

DES 69-4, C-2691, "Visit Un-Derland", Kim Whitesides (dancer)

DES 69-5, C-2692, "Turn Un", Pat Dypold, (melting face)

It was 1969 and 7Up wanted to appeal to the youth market. What else can I say... The UnCola adaptation of the popular phrase at the time "Turn On" did NOT refer to flipping light switches on during that era. Look it up if you need further explanation. The original phrase at the time was "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out" by psychedelic LSD guru Timothy Leary.

I think there might have been something else mixed in with the liquid in the glass. Just imagine seeing this giant billboard actually looming over your local schoolyard back then. No advertiser would even consider doing anything so absolutely BOLD today.

"Turn-On" was also the name of an ill-fated TV series that was almost pulled before the end of the first (and only) episode finished airing on 2/5/69.

Contact me if you have a serious interest in acquiring any of my dozen or so duplicate billboards. I'm also interested in trades that will complete my collection.

Will also consider a legitimate gallery showings if you have a space large enough to hold over 2 dozen billboards at 21'x10' each.

My prices would be FAR more reasonable and come with in-depth accurate research compared to my $15,000 (linen backed) & $12,500 competition:

This image:

This is Design 70-2 per the rainlap diagram on the rear of top left Panel A1. That indicates it was the 2nd billboard image released in 1970. Kim illustrated 2 other UnCola images that were issued in 1969 ("Un & Un Isd Too" and ""Visit Underland"). A 4th "The UnUsual" image was submitted but not selected for printing. You can find these in my other postings on Flickr.

21'x10' vintage billboard acquired in Mint condition.

To save on printing costs, this image was printed with a larger number of smaller panels so they could ship the all white panels that didn't have to be run through the offset lithograph printing machines. Normally they have 12 panels at 43" wide x 59" tall. I was able to reinforce the panels with minimal clear, acid-free scrapbooking tape on the back (only).

Unfortunately, the very bottom right panel G2 is missing. It's all white with the exception of about an inch of the last "s" in "cents" which I Photoshopped in to this collage.

This is one of maybe 3 known copies in this 21'x10' billboard Size "A".

The illustrator was featured on pages #11 & 12 with his "Un & Un Is Too" image in a small American Contemporary Graphics booklet from about 1971-72. This image was included on black & white inside back cover pages #23 & 24 in the same booklet:

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/albums/72157636886600686

Bottom line: I've never seen this image offered to the general public in my probably incomplete collection of billboard & poster offers.

More info later.

A 21’x10’ billboard version in mint condition of this image has been acquired. Photos and collage will be months away.

21'x10' 7Up UnCola billboard by Pat Dypold.

Pat did the bulk of the UnCola billboards from 1969 until the mid 1970's. This group of characters are similar to the "Go on out to the lobby" characters in the ad frequently played at movie intermissions in the middle of the 20th century.

Is that Sponge Bob Square Pants father on the far right?

Each of the 12 panels are 43" wide x 59" tall and were photographed and assembled in a rainlap fashion (on a real highway billboard or digitally in this Photoshop collage) so that the upper panels could shed water over the top of the seam or cover the 1" white margins on the right and top edges.

To get a sense of scale, the can is about the size of a 50 gallon barrel and each character is close to 7-8' tall.

This billboard collage was color corrected from panel to panel more than some of the others in my collection since it has solid color fills. In actuality, the colors match perfectly but the light meter on the camera is easily fooled.

This is only the 18th 7Up UnCola billboard image to be processed so far out of about 2 dozen different images in my collection to date. Check back later to see more as they get repaired (if necessary), photographed and photo-collaged together. It takes a while to process thousands of square feet of vintage paper that's almost 5 decades old in my limited spare time. I also have a few duplicates of the more popular billboards.

1/30/18:

My previous post from 2014 showing this same poster (not for sale) was a poor quality scan so I decided it was time to re-photograph it properly.

Nancy Martell's name is in the purple hair in the upper right. She married Charlie Martell who was another key member of the ad campaign at J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) in Chicago. There were several inter-office romances that resulted in marriages among this group. They reportedly had a lot of fun working with a dream client who allowed a lot of creative freedom. Call them the Midwest Mad Men.

This poster is in impeccable condition with only a 1" triangular nibble (damn rodents) from near the bottom right corner. I spliced in some matching poster paper from the same era years ago using acid-free scrapbooking tape on the back and the repair is nearly invisible. In fact, I didn't even notice it while photographing it today. When I copied and pasted the text from 3 years ago it reminded me of the only flaw. There's one dot sized stain under the last "U" within 1/4" of the bottom edge but there are no holes anywhere. Even the back side is almost 100% perfectly white.

I have several other examples of this same image posted on Flickr:

It's pure speculation, and I'm not alone in this, but the figure on the left in this image and in Kim Whitesides' 1969 "Un & Un Is Too" look a lot like John Lennon of The Beatles:

This is a collage of the 54 +/- billboard images by the Seven Up Company working with the J Walter Thompson [advertising] Company of Chicago (the Midwest Mad Men) between about 1969 and the middle of the 1970's. They are arranged in chronological order as much as I can determine per the rainlap diagram on the rear of top left Panel A1 of each copy.

I also used my collection of several booklets about "The UnCola" award winning ad campaign and the expiration dates of billboard and poster offers to bracket the possible issue dates of each.

They represent over 11,300 square feet (1,053 sq. meters) which would equal 2.5 regulation basketball courts laid side to side.

Most are ONE-OF-A-KIND, TWO-OF-A-KIND, or one of just a couple dozen known copies at the most. VERY RARE

"The UnCola" story:

My listings come from the largest, one-of-a-kind collection of 7Up UnCola posters and billboards in the world. To learn more about this award winning ad campaign, search for in-depth articles by Collectors Weekly (Collecting 7Ups Most Beautiful Hallucinatory Billboards), Dangerous Minds (The UnCola 7Up And The Most Psychedelic LSD Friendly Ad Campaign of All Time) or DJ Food's (7Up The UnCola Posters) blogs. Alternately, search <7Up UnCola> on flickr dot com and you'll quickly find out more about these art competition winning advertising images issued in the late 60's & early 70's:

These outdoor ads (billboards) were commissioned by the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. of Chicago (JWT) between 1969 and the mid-1970's. I consider them the "Midwest Mad Men". Most of the 54+ extremely colorful billboard & poster images were illustrated by invited outside freelance artists who were allowed to sign their names on the originals if desired - not all did. If their design was selected, they received $2,000 for the final artwork. My collection includes at least one each of over two-thirds of the billboards and only my duplicate copies are being offered for sale. A few images were produced in-house at JWT, and never with the artist's name on them. JWT wisely chose to invite only up and coming artists and not well known graphic stars so as not to let their notoriety overshadow the 7Up product itself. FYI - Peter Max did NONE of the 7Up posters, contrary to popular belief. This famous ad campaign increased sales by 30% in a short time and rescued Seven Up from near bankruptcy. Since then they've lost their fizz.

Many of the artists have gone on to great fame in the graphics community Milton Glaser (I [heart] NY logo) (Mad Men final Season 7 poster; co-founder of Push Pin Studios), Seymour Chwast (co-founder of Push Pin Studios) with Isadore Seltzer (Push Pin), John Alcorn (Push Pin), Barry Zaid (Push Pin), Kim Whitesides, Jacqui Morgan, Simms Taback (1st Happy Meal Box in Smithsonian & Caldecott Honor for children's books), Skip Williamson (underground comics), Robert Abel (1st Tron movie animations), Charlie White III (permanent collection at MOMA), John Craig, Ray Lyle, Heather Cooper, Nancy Martell, Roger Chouinard, Pat Dypold, Bob Taylor, Tom Kamifuji (original rainbow logo for Apple), Bill Bosworth, Ed George, Joanne _ and probably several others.

From time to time Seven Up offered other billboard and poster images to the general public for prices ranging from $0.50 to $1.50 for posters and $3.50 up to $8.50 for billboards. My collection also includes a number of billboard & poster offers that helps me to pin down issue dates.

Before he died in 2017, Skip did confirm to me in an email that this was his image. It's a bit more family friendly relative to the rest of his more provocative work. Search for Sammy Smoot who was perhaps his most well known character and then compare the styles, eyeballs and tongue.

This is Design xxxx per the rainlap diagram on the rear of top left Panel A1. Note: this billboard did not have a Rainlap Diagram design number included.

I've dated it to 1971 based upon its inclusion in the small American Contemporary Graphics booklet from that same year. It could also be from earlier.

21'x10' vintage billboard acquired in Very Good condition.

This is truly ONE-OF-A-KIND. I know of no other copies in any size at this time.

This image:

This is Design 71120 per the rainlap diagram on the rear of top left Panel A1. My research indicates that this image was issued in 1971 based upon the first 2 digits in the design number.

21'x10' vintage billboard acquired in Very Good condition.

This is truly ONE-OF-A-KIND. I know of no other copies in any size at this time.

The illustrator was featured on pages #21 & 22 with his "Hang Un" image and this "Shine Un" was included on the black & white back inside cover pages #23 & 24 in a small American Contemporary Graphics booklet from about 1971-72:

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/albums/72157636886600686

This image was NOT featured (but "Hang Un" was) in issue #47 of the "Dimensions" quarterly booklet published in the Fall of 1973 by the Simpson Lee Paper Company - this time focused entirely on 7Up billboards:

Bottom line: I've never seen this image offered to the general public in my probably incomplete collection of billboard & poster offers.

This image:

This is Design 71132 per the rainlap diagram on the rear of top left Panel A1.

I’m assuming that 5-digit numbers starting with 71xxx were issued in 1971 and that those starting with 72xxx were from 1972.

21'x10' vintage billboard acquired in 2010 in only fair condition. At the time is was missing the two far left panels with the text. As fortune would smile on me, the exact same missing panels came bundled with several other billboards acquired in 2020 from the original seller's brother* across the country and a decade later. * = I assume, since the last name was the same on the return address. This billboard has quite a bit of clear, acid-free scrapbooking tape on the back (only).

To save on printing costs, this image was printed with a larger number of smaller panels so they could ship all white panels that didn't have to be run through the offset lithograph printing machines.. Normally they have 12 panels at 43" wide x 59" tall.

This is TWO-OF-A-KIND, or possibly three.

There are also other copies around in smaller poster sizes, including a 5'x3' "subway" size in my collection and a 34"x21" version.

3/7/17:

I believe this to be the "Printer's Proof" that was used as the gold standard for comparison purposes when offset printing any subsequent copies of the 21'x10' "Size A" billboard version. Look at the cross hair markings, the hand written symbol in the bottom right corner and the mostly trimmed off color scale at the top right. Another clue is that the line of copyright text in the bottom right corner is only printed on the billboard size, not the smaller posters. Another difference here is the presence of a pale green background inside the rainbow in the billboard version that is white in the smaller 34"x21" "Size C" posters.

This treasure came from the estate of a 7Up executive and was behind glass in a sealed frame, probably since it was acquired by him in 1969. It is therefore in nearly perfect New Old Stock (NOS) MINT CONDITION!!! This is the 3rd and final acquisition from the same source. The "Visit Un-Derland" (also by Kim Whitesides) has even more printer's proof markings. The 3rd "Turn Un" by Pat Dypold was significantly trimmed during framing to just the central image, but based on what I've seen from this source, it was also likely a printer's proof. Note: The "Turn Un" Printer's Proof is the ONLY KNOWN COMPLETE COPY of that image in ANY SIZE.

The only repair needed was 2 very small pieces of acid-free scrapbooking tape behind the top left corner. Some of the mat board was stuck to the paper 48 years ago. Only the central image was visible when I purchased it. The rest was a pleasant bonus/surprise when the glossy paper was removed from behind the mat board and glass.

Kim Whitesides's signature* is on the right side, just above the first "Un". * = None of the signatures on the 7Up posters or billboards are hand written. They are on the original artwork only.

My 3 companion Size "A" billboard versions are the 3rd 21'x10' 7Up UnCola billboard image to be issued in 1969 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back lists this as [Design] DES 69-3 - "Un & Un Is Too" (2 guitar players).

There are 4 images by Kim Whitesides for the 7Up UnCola ad campaign that I'm aware of. The most common is this "Un & Un Is Too" from 1969. My collection includes 2 billboards and some smaller posters of this image. More can be seen on-line being offered for sale.

There are at least 53 billboard images in the entire body of work spanning from 1969 until the mid-1970's. Only up-and-coming artists of the day were invited to submit designs which were then judged by the client. The J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. in Chicago orchestrated the entire ad campaign.

Twin copies of the billboard version were up BEFORE Woodstock in mid-August of 1969!

4/14/18: The billboard in this photo is one of 3 or 4 "still" images commissioned after the release of a famous cutting edge (at the time) 1974 "Bubbles" TV ad by Robert Abel & Associates (original Tron movie) and Richard Taylor with an extremely short time frame. My collection includes 28 (and growing) of these giant colorful artworks (plus duplicates for sale) that IMO deserve to be the focus of, or part of a museum exhibit tying together the art, music, fashion and advertising of the late 1960's & early 1970's psychedelic, counter culture & anti-war movements. The 50th anniversary of "The UnCola", Man's 1st walk on the Moon and the Woodstock Festival will all be celebrated next year in 2019. Undoubtedly there will be a LOT of media hype about some of these topics.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago curated a similar exhibition in 2014 built around David Bowie's music, wardrobe and other influencers:

2/16/17:

- - - ONE-OF-A-KIND - - -

This is the ONLY KNOWN HARD COPY of this image in a small poster size. 30" x 16.25". Likewise, my 21' x 10' Size "A" billboard version is also the ONLY KNOWN COPY in that gigantic size.

I believe this to be the "Printer's Proof" that was used as the gold standard for comparison purposes when offset printing any subsequent copies of the 21'x10' "Size A" billboard version. Look at the cross hair markings, the hand written notes for the 4 different CMYK colors and the color scale at the top. In this case, there are no other smaller posters to compare with.

This treasure came from the estate of a 7Up executive and was behind glass in a sealed frame, probably since it was acquired by him in 1969. It is therefore in nearly perfect New Old Stock (NOS) MINT CONDITION!!! This is the 2nd acquisition from the same source. The "Un & Un Is Too" (also by Kim Whitesides) has less printer's proof markings, but there was more trimming at the top. The 3rd "Turn Un" by Pat Dypold was significantly trimmed during framing to just the central image, but based on what I've seen from this source, it was also likely a printer's proof.

The only repair needed was a 1.5" piece of acid-free scrapbooking tape behind the top left corner to repair a short rip suffered during shipping due to inadequate protection (I asked the seller to pull it from the frame that I had no interest in). The blotch in the upper right corner is some of the mat board that I have not taken the time to remove just yet. Only the image was visible when I purchased it. The rest was a pleasant bonus/surprise when the glossy paper was removed from behind the mat board & glass.

Kim Whitesides's signature* is on the left side of the center 7Up circle. * = None of the signatures on the 7Up posters or billboards are hand written. They are on the original artwork only.

Refer to my other recent post showing a scale model of this billboard image. The JPG image used to print the color insert in the scale model graciously came from the artist himself prior to this original poster being acquired.

My companion Size "A" billboard version is the 4th 21'x10' 7Up UnCola billboard to be displayed in 1969 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back lists this as [Design] DES 69-4, C-2691. This image appears to be a slender girl dancing or tiptoeing through the tulips which are common in many of Whiteside illustrations. This also follows falsetto voiced Tiny Tim's "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" done in 1968.

1973 or '74 7Up UnCola "See The Light" by Canadian artist Heather Cooper. Her embroidered signature is in the bottom left corner.

60" x 45" poster (not for sale).

This is #2 of 3 different stunning posters that just arrived in their original Seven Up time capsule mailing tube postmarked JUL 17, 1974. All 3 are in unused, never folded, rolled, MINT condition. Each is also the 2nd of ONLY 2 KNOWN COPIES*.

* Note: poster #3 of 3 (not yet posted) has a 3rd known twin copy that's in the permanent collection at MOMA. Check back later to see it.

This poster is actually a photograph of an embroidered original. Per Heather in an email to me:

"The concept came from the [J Walter Thompson (JWT) ] ad agency, it is not something I would normally create. The plan was to produce a TV commercial, they hired a model that pretended to be the artist, I was on set to make sure nothing went wrong, artwork wise. You may or may not enjoy this detail, butterflies were migrating through Chicago at this point in time and there were opportunities to catch one or two and let them go in the space where we were shooting. I can't remember if we did this or not, in any event it was not a thing that can be controlled. The butterflies do not respond to instruction."

I'd love to see the TV ad.

1973 or '74 7Up UnCola "Neon Lips" by (artist unknown) 60" x 45" poster (not for sale).

This is #1 of 3 different stunning posters that just arrived in their original Seven Up time capsule mailing tube postmarked JUL 17, 1974. All 3 are in unused, never folded, rolled, MINT condition. Each is also the 2nd of ONLY 2 KNOWN COPIES*.

* Note: one of the 3 has a 3rd known twin copy that's in the permanent collection at MOMA. Check later to see the other 2.

These characters definitely look like they came from the 1971 Broadway musical "Godspell" or a later touring company. I'd welcome any confirmation or information about who these people might be.

They are arranged in chronological order as best as I can determine based upon the Design Numbers (DES) included in the Rainlap Diagrams rubber stamped on the back side of upper left Panel A1. For example: DES 69-2 was the 2nd image issued in 1969 and DES 70-6 was the 6th issued in 1970. After that, the codes shifted. I'm assuming numbers starting with 71xxx were issued in 1971 and those that started with 72xxx were issued in 1972. My collection of billboard and poster offers from the award winning "The UnCola" ad campaign further refined the issue dates based upon the expiration dates of the offers.

"Un Un And Away" by Bob Taylor (1970). DES 70-8.

Bob Taylor was one of the most crucial members on staff at the J Walter Thompson [advertising] Company (JWT) in Chicago that orchestrated the entire "UnCola" ad campaign. None of the in-house staff ever added their signatures - just the invited up-and-coming artists of the day.

These were both some of the very earliest 21'x10' billboard designs issued in 1969 & 1970 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back of the top left panel A1 lists the [Design] DES numbers. This image:

This is Design 69-10 per the rainlap diagram on the rear of top left Panel A1. That indicates that it was the 10th image issued in the inaugural year of 1969 for "The UnCola" ad campaign.

21'x10' vintage billboard acquired in MINT, New Old Stock (NOS) condition. It consists of 12 panels at 43" wide x 59" tall. Unfortunately, Panel E2 is missing, but extra copies of a few of the other panels were included.

- - - Do any up-and-coming artists want to make a stab at filling in the section of the boat that's missing? - - -

This is truly ONE-OF-A-KIND.

I know of no other copies in any size at this time.

I could also find no billboard and poster offers making this available to the general public, but here are poster offers that I have found and collected:

Model Railroad "O" Gauge (1/48), aptly named "reefer car" (refrigerated car). Model #701979.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrigerator_car

This solid feeling car is about 10 1/2" long (11 1/2" with couplings), 2 5/16" wide and 3 1/2" tall. The wheel assemblies are die-cast metal and the boxcar is ABS plastic with intricate detail. The spring loaded doors do open.

I'm still researching the history of these cars and the advertising on them. Decades ago a court ruling supposedly outlawed advertising on the outside of a rail car because companies shipping goods inside the cars were not benefiting from the added revenue of the traveling billboards on the exterior surface.

The manufacturer was MTH Trains, mthtrains.com/ although I found this one on eBay. mthtrains.com/30-78074

The Dr Pepper/Seven Up Co.* licensed MTH to produce this replica model train car in 2008, long before I started expanding my collection of 7Up UnCola billboards. In October I purchased a companion "box car" with the "Right Un" (sunrise) image by [unknown] from the same 1969 - 1975 time period..

Maybe more will eventually be located using any of the other 53+ billboards from The UnCola series. See the other restored billboards in my collection in this album:

These two hand-made pop-up booklets just arrived and are in delicate condition (loose glue in places), but can be easily repaired. Some of the loose press-on black tape will be replaced - I used to use this stuff for pre-computer presentations in architecture school in the '70's.

There are many moving parts: wheels that spin, a pair of bicycles that pop up, gear shifter knobs & pedals that rotate, etc.

There are 3 more photos of the 2 booklets adjacent to this post that show more detail.

They came from a source in Pasadena, CA so my guess (& hope) is that these were Tom Kamifuji's attempts to further develop Bill Bosworth's original concept. Bill worked in-house for the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. in Chicago that orchestrated the famous 7Up UnCola ad campaign, but didn't possess the proper American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) credentials for doing the final billboard artwork.

Tom, being based in San Francisco is also credited with being the inspiration for the rainbow in the early Apple Computer logo.

www.seattletimes.com/business/marketing-pioneer-recalls-e...

Model Railroad "O" Gauge (1/48), box car. Model #19709.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxcar

"Right On" was a phrase popularized by youth and hippies in the late 1960's and early 1970's to express agreement. Seven Up and their J Walter Thompson advertising agency adapted it be "Right Un" for their UnCola ad campaign.

idioms.thefreedictionary.com/Right+on!

Until I discovered this image slapped on the side of a model train car, I'd never seen it anywhere else. There does not appear to be any signature in the image so it was either by one of the few invited artists that declined to sign or it was done by in-house staff at J Walter Thompson Co. (apparently not allowed to sign). The "Right On" image also does not appear in any of the billboard and poster offers that I've collected to date. Without a doubt, it's from 1969 until 1975 at the latest. My guess is 1971. Please let me know if anyone can identify the artist by style.

21' x 10' Size "A" 7Up UnCola "Shine Un" vintage billboard by Barry Zaid in 1970. This is the ONLY KNOWN SURVIVING COPY that has ever surfaced to my knowledge.

Barry (born 6/8/1938) worked at the prestigious Push Pin Studios from 1969 to 1975 during its prime. Quite a few 7Up UnCola billboards originated from this graphics shop during that same time period, including another by him entitled "Hang Un".

I think Edward Scissor Hands must have been one of the previous owners. The top 6 panels were all cut in two (or more) horizontally and the bottom white margins are also removed. I ran out of space in my living room to lay it all out. There are a few narrow strips of paper missing from all of the cutting, but it's 95% present. The Rainlap Diagram on the back of top left Panel A1 does not have the usual code that helps me place all 54 +/- 7Up UnCola billboard images in chronological order.

This was the 5th 21'x10' billboard design issued in 1969 to introduce the hugely successful "The UnCola" ad campaign to America. The rainlap diagram on the back of the top left panel A1 lists this as [Design] DES 69-5, C-2692. Pat Dypold illustrated the bulk of the 54+ 7Up UnCola billboard images issued between 1969 and the mid-1970's. Her signature is in the bottom right, next to the rim of the glass. At least 1 copy each of roughly half of those original billboards have been gathered into my collection and saved from destruction or the trash heap, usually one at a time.

See the rest of my billboard collection in this album:

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/albums/72157657430138044

Although the list goes on, the first 5 of the 54 billboards issued were (and I have at least one copy of each):

The original phrase at the time was "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out" by psychedelic LSD guru Timothy Leary.

www.flickr.com/photos/jimedblanchard/4774204283/in/photol...

I think there might have been something else mixed in with the liquid in the glass. Just imagine seeing this giant billboard actually looming over your local schoolyard back then. No advertiser would even consider doing anything so absolutely BOLD today.

www.retrojunk.com/commercial/show/26455/7up

"Turn-On" was also the name of an ill-fated TV series that was almost pulled before the end of the first (and only) episode finished airing on 2/5/69.

I've dated it to 1972 based upon the number "2" as the 3rd digit in the numbering system, but that's pure speculation. Their system changed from very simple to very obscure in the later years (69-x, 70-x, 71-x, 711xxx, 712xx, 73xx, etc.) until some didn't even have numbers at all toward the end.

21'x10' vintage billboard acquired in Very Good condition.

It has 12 panels at 43" wide x 59" tall. As of the end of 2022 when this image from the previous owner was posted, it's the last billboard I need to repair, photograph and collage together in Photoshop. Some of the panels will require reinforcing with clear, acid-free scrapbooking tape on the back (only).

This is truly ONE-OF-A-KIND. I know of no other copies in any size at this time.

The illustrator and their image was NOT featured in a small American Contemporary Graphics booklet from about 1971-72:

Search "7Up UnCola Billboards" on eBay or Flickr.com if you'd like to learn more about this stunning body of work or acquire originals that might be duplicates to me. I keep the best and sell the rest.

This represents 27 of the restored billboards in my collection to date. Still remaining to be restored is "The Youth Fare" (bi-plane) by Bob Taylor from about 1969.

Explore my "Virtual Museum" and various other "Albums" on Flickr.com to see sub-groups in my 7Up UnCola collection:

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/albums/72157657430138044

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/albums

They're arranged in more or less chronological order with the oldest (1969) at the beginning through the mid-1970's at the end. I know of a few that will shift places after I reconfirm the numbered "rainlap diagram" codes on the back.

At 21'x10' each (210 square feet), this sheet represents 5,670 s.f. (63'x90') of offset lithographic paper treasure, enough to overwhelm even the largest museum exhibit halls.

If these were all laid out flat on a standard 60' wide parking lot, they would cover 10 parking spaces on each side of the drive and still hang 3' over the side curbs.

Most are in unused, mint condition having never been displayed. They're simply too big for most homes. Over half are literally ONE-OF-A-KIND. If duplicates are known to exist, they usually number from 2 to 6 as of today. Contact me if you have a serious interest in acquiring one of my dozen or so giant duplicates, smaller posters or 9 1/4" tall mini-billboard models. There will be a comma in the price. www.ebay.com/usr/finishstrong312

Please visit any of my Albums on Flickr to see and learn more about each of these giant colorful posters saved from the trash heaps, typically one at a time:

www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/albums

Museum Directors: Contact me to be the first to curate and display these in advance of the hype that will undoubtedly surround the joint 50th anniversary of both Woodstock and "The UnCola" - 1969 - 2019. That's only about 2 1/2 years away and there's a great story to be told about the interplay between youth oriented advertising and the counter-culture movement of the late 60's. I've documented at least 53 UnCola billboards orchestrated by the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. in Chicago during that period and I know where some of the remaining examples are located.

Artists involved in the collective body of work included such notables as: Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast (w/ fellow Push Pin Studios artist Isador Seltzer), Robert Abel, Pat Dypold, Bob Taylor, Kim Whitesides, John Alcorn, Charlie White III, Jacqui Morgan, Heather Cooper, Bill Bosworth (w/ Tom Kamifuji), Ed George, Nancy Martell, Barry Zaid, Ray Lyle, Skip Williamson, Simms Taback, Roger Chouinard, Joanne _ and probably a few more on the unsigned originals.

If anyone has any UnCola posters or billboards, please extend me the courtesy of providing me with a "first look" before you use my research to market them so that I can fill in the missing pieces.

If you blog, reblog or otherwise use my images in any way, please link back to the original(s) and provide me credit in return for my substantial monetary investment, time and research to share & post these on-line. All of my photographs are "ALL RIGHTS RESERVED" and I will defend them vigorously. Thanks, and enjoy!

They're arranged in chronological order as much as I can tell based on codes on the back of upper left Panel A1 and billboard/poster offers with known expiration dates.

The early releases in 1969, 1970 & part way through 1971 were easy to place in order with the year built into the code on the back. After that, either the printer, J Walter Thompson (JWT) [advertising] Co. or Seven Up adopted a 5-digit code using 711xx or 712xx. I've arbitrarily assumed those are 1971 and 1972, but it's just my guess. Near the end of the campaign, they stopped adding codes altogether so it becomes less clear. My billboard/poster offer expiration dates or other more obscure clues then becomes more important.

These two hand-made pop-up booklets just arrived and are in delicate condition (loose glue in places), but can be easily repaired. Some of the loose press-on black tape will be replaced - I used to use this stuff for presentations in architecture school in the '70's.

They came from a source in Pasadena, CA so my guess (& hope) is that these were Tom Kamifuji's attempts to further develop Bill Bosworth's original concept. Bill worked in-house for the J. Walter Thompson [advertising] Co. in Chicago that orchestrated the famous 7Up UnCola ad campaign, but didn't possess the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) credentials for doing the final billboard artwork.

21' x 10' Size "A" 7Up UnCola "The Island Of Pure Refreshment" vintage billboard by Roger Chouinard in 1973. This is one of the ONLY TWO KNOWN COPIES that have ever surfaced (both are now in my collection).

This image is a "still" harvested from a 1973 animated TV commercial that opens with a blizzard scene in "Don't Be Left Out In The Cola" by Milton Glaser and eventually moves to this more tropical location. Look for this image and spoken title at 1:03 into this 1:09 TV video ad:

Both billboard copies arrived in May 2018 from a seller in Canada in stunningly MINT condition. Duplicate Copy #2 of 2 will be offered for sale once properly photographed (contact me if interested). They were accompanied by the only known copy of "Shine Un" by Barry Zaid (needs restoration - each panel in the top row was cut in two horizontally) and 1 1/3 copies of "UnCanny In Cans" by John Alcorn (mint condition).

This was offered to the general public in a "New For 1973" poster offer as Design #16 in 21'x10' Size "A" and in 33"x20" Size "C":

Also in my collection is one copy of the 33"x20" Size "C" version. As of this writing, I've seen less than a half dozen other Size "C" copies surface total and no copies of Sizes "B" or "D".

The small poster acquired years ago has a lot more green in the water and sky so I was not as excited about buying these two billboards, but the aspect ratio, composition, maritime clouds, softer blue water & sky plus the excellent condition changed my mind immediately about this piece once it was spread out on the floor to inspect.

See adjacent photo for the other side of this billboard and poster offer. It expired on 12/31/69.
