Coming to the NEC for some high-speed testing, they're a long way from home as the head to Philadelphia to get started.

This is a closeup look at AMTK 79501, the final car on the new Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset. This is a Cab/Coach car that will work as part of a push-pull operation. It has 88 seats in the car. This is a new trainset built by Siemens in California.

I had all but given up photting this working since it ran into major problems north of Cheltenham Spa and consequently was severely delayed.

50008 'Thunderer' t&t 56104 worked the 4Z03 Oakhampton - Chaddesden Sidings up to Gloucester, when as 'planned' (but not on RTT), it was routed into Gloucester Station to enable the 'Grid' to take the movement north.

Unfortunately, a rather smoky 56104 'failed' north of Ashchurch and was routed into Eckington loop where, after much delay, 50008 ran-round the consist to take over the working.

50008 'Thunderer' with the dead 'Grid' soon emerged from the loop and could be heard two miles away, as it got 4Z03 'on the move'.

The consist comprising of the rail-grinder (79501 -7 inc) is seen having just passed over the River Avon at Defford now 2hours late making a great sight and sound.

The New Amtrak Airo Trainset, painted in the Cascades scheme, clears HOLMES interlocking on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor during a test run.

The test run included "Stop Distance Testing" for the SC-44 with the trainset. This includes bringing the train to a steady speed, then braking to see how the test unit(s) responds to a brake application, proving the combination will work for revenue service in the future.

The test only ran one round trip between Amtrak's Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia and HOLMES interlocking, clearing Holmesburg Junction station.

Amtrak Airo Cab Car #79501 lead the Eastbound facing section of the trip, while Amtrak SC-44 #1403 lead the Westbound portion of the trip.

Since the ALC-42E that came with this trainset (#70001) was already tested out in Pueblo, CO at TTCI, this test was necessary for the SC-44s "Stop Distance Testing", along with its compatibility with the trainset, as over 75% of the Airo Trainsets bound for the Cascades will be paired with a Cascades SC-44.

Amtrak's first Airo Trainset, operating under symbol 871, rolls through Bryn Mawr Station during its first successful test on revenue rails.

After mechanical trouble with the first test attempt one week before, the train made it out of Penn Coach Yard to test cut in safety systems, along with performance testing the WASDOT SC-44 along with the new WASDOT ALC-42E, as far as Parksburg, then back. Intermediately, they ran multiple round trips between Overbrook and Bryn Mawr, along with THORN to CALN interlockings.

Leading the charge from PCY was WASDOT Cab Car #79501, being pushed by SC-44 #1403 followed by ALC-42E #70001.

Eagle-eyed followers of my jigsaw puzzle photos will have spotted that this image has appeared before, as a 1000 pc Wentworth wooden puzzle. We still have that one, stored away so we can revisit it at some time in the future. But when we came across this Eurographics version we had to have it too! Obviously not as challenging as the Wentworth, but still immense fun to assemble, as the pieces have that slightly 'wonky' look which is characteristic of this maker. Complete.
