Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire - 2017 Volvo 7900E Demonstrator

807 (BN68XSC) leaves Harrogate Town Centre as it heads to Pannal Ash on route 6.

In February 2017, a five year plan was revealed by Transdev for Harrogate to become a low emission town. This renewable energy approach was signaled with an order for eight Volvo 7900E single deckers with integral bodies built in Poland.

The plan was to have these new buses in service by the summer of 2018, replacing the eight Optare Versa MV1170s which had been in service since May 2012. Before the new Volvos arrived Harrogate bus station saw the arrival of three pantogragh stations, these were for the oppounity charging process. To fast charge the buses during the ten minute pause at the station between duties. 801-4 arrived first with all four taking part in a special event held in July 2018, to showcase the new project. However by the time August arrived the new electic equipment was still to be conected to the main supply. 801 was shown to the public during August on Oxford Street in Harrogate, just outside of Marks and Spencers.

As it transpired an diesel generator was installed to try and get these impressive vehicles into service. 805-8 arrived during September 2018, by now some had entered service, working alongside other vehicles. By early 2019 the issue/dispute with Northern Powergird was resolved and the elctric power unit conected to the mains. Now 801-8 were able to be used all day, they were nicely appointed inside with the usual Transdev features. High back cloth seating, wood effect floor and ceilings, up lights and LED strip lights, ample legroom, bins and large tinted windows.

By 2023, some issues with the batteries, saw 805 return to Poland, here the bus stayed until early 2025, returning to Harrogate. The main issue was the low range batteries which were fitted to the batch, with upto 40 miles range, mid range batteries and a better charging regime might have seen these buses last longer. However in early September 2025, 801-8 were advertised for sale at a dealership. By mid September 801-8 were removed from Harrogate and sent either for disposal or in the case of 806 resale to another operator.

Here 808 is seen in Bilton working the revised joint operation of the 2A and 2B in Febuary 2023, but still displaying 2A in the destination screen. The current plan is for extra spare vehicles being brought in which means some Volvo B7RELs are still in service at Harrogate, 1837 and 1838, plus 1860 and Mercedes Benz hybrid 1513 from Flyer helping out. By November replacements for the Volvos are due, at the time of writting vehicle type has not be disclosed.
