The three story tall image of one of the Philadelphia 76ers most famous basketball stars, Julius Erving, has graced this corner of North Philadelphia since 1990.

"Feeling restless and desperate to improve the quality and variety of the murals, Jane made a decision in 1990 that would forever change Mural Arts Philadelphia. She raised money from a private foundation to bring her old friend and mentor Kent Twitchell to Philadelphia. She wanted a “breakthrough mural,” and Twitchell—a nationally acclaimed California artist—was just the man to paint it. “We knew we had to push the boundaries,” she said. 'The goal was to try to integrate superior artwork with a subject that touched the community in a special way.' " Mural Arts website, Jan 2021

Philadelphia. I liked the Barkley years, nothing much since then unfortunately. www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2021/09/Philadelphia_filed Here’s a post I have wanted to do for a long time, and a perfect Sunday post. Growing up in small-town Normandy, my geography (and really all of my knowledge) of the United States originally came from… basketball and the NBA. I’ll spare you how starved of images and information we were, but I soon knew well all the cities that had a team, and totally ignored all the others, no matter big or small, east or west. I’ve travelled to most of them since, but flying in space is a good way for me to reconcile actual geography with the NBA map I’ve always had in mind, where San Antonio is just as big as LA, and Chicago bigger than New York City… ;)

Allen iverson en philadelphia 76ers,nba ,AI3,http://thedanger23.blogspot.com.

I caught this "Sixers" piece about 10 years ago and just filed it away like everything else. I always wondered if it was really as old as it looks (early 80's) or if it was kind of made to look like nostalgic graf. The 76ers went to the NBA finals and played against the Lakers in 79-80, 81-82, 82-83 and the 00-01 season. Upon further review Seza threw up Coach Brown and at least four members of the 00-01 squad by number. #3 Allen Iverson, #55 Dikembe Mutombo, #8 Aaron Mckie and #20 Eric Snow. This graffiti is very cool to me and I wish more people would do it. Especially(not in this case) when the management is putting a sub-par team on the floor / field year after year. -M

I thought I would get everyone's attention for my first post from last night.

This statue of Julius Erving, sculpted in 1987 by Barney Bright, was dedicated in front of The Spectrum on January 18, 1989. The life-size bronze likeness of the 6'7" star sits atop an 8"x54"x60" granite base was donated by Converse Inc.

Julius Winfield Erving II, affectionately known by the nickname Dr. J, helped launch the modern style of basketball by playing above the rim. Erving helped legitimize the now-defunct American Basketball Association (ABA) playing for the Virginia Squires from 1971-73 and then the New York Nets from 1973-1976. In his five ABA seasons, Erving won two championships, three MVP awards, three scoring titles, and played in five All-Star games. After the NBA absorbed the Nets, Erving was sold to the Philadelphia 76ers. He played with the 76ers through his retirement in 1987. With the Sixers, he won another championship, another MVP award, two All Star Game MVP awards, and played in 11 All-Star games. He is the fifth-highest scorer in professional basketball history, with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined). Erving was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team and in 1993 was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
