Harrogate Theatre - the stage and boxes from the dress circle. Opened in 1900 as the Grand Opera House, designed by Frank Tugwell, Harrogate Theatre retains its Victorian opulence and is grade 2 listed. It was constructed on an awkward wedge-shaped site at the junction of Oxford Street and Cheltenham Parade - the stage has a particularly odd footprint. It seats just under 500, down from 797 following a refurbishment in 1974 by Roderick Ham which reduced the gallery level seating. The initial 1900 capacity was 1,300, when the pit and gallery would have been tightly packed bench seats. A further refurbishment in 2007 focussed on the front-of-house. The theatre is equipped for film performances and accommodates the Harrogate Film Society. There is also a 70 seat studio theatre.
