The second leg of UK Railtours' "The West Midlands Deviator", from Bedford to Burton-upon-Trent, passes Cossington on the Down Fast (as booked). Class 50 Alliance-owned 50049 Defiance is powering the train, while Nemesis Rail-owned 31128 Charybdis and 20205 bring up the rear. The working is 1Z50 07.34 Bedford - Burton Wetmore Sidings.
The full railtour, which was operated by Hanson and Hall, ran as follows:
- 1Z20 05.50 Derby - Bedford via the Midland Main Line, hauled by 31128 and 20205;
- 1Z50 07.34 Bedford - Burton Wetmore Sidings via the Midland Main Line and Castle Donington (at Burton, reversing at Leicester Jn., running north along the Up Tamworth Goods, and then reversing again north of Wetmore Jn. to access the Nemesis Rail sidings), hauled by 50049 to Leicester Jn. and into Wetmore yard, and by 31128 and 20205 from Leicester Jn. to Wetmore Jn.;
- south through the Nemesis Rail sidings, hauled by Nemesis Rail-owned 73114, and then back north, hauled most of the way by Nemesis Rail-owned 20007;
- 1Z51 10.52 Burton Wetmore Sidings - Stratford-upon-Avon via Wetmore Jn. (reverse), Lichfield, Aston, Stetchford, Coventry and Leamington Spa (reverse), hauled out of Wetmore yard and from Leamington Spa by 31128 and 20205, and by 50049 from Burton to Leamington Spa;
- 1Z21 13.59 Stratford-upon-Avon - Birmingham Moor Street via Henley-in-Arden, hauled by 50049;
- 1Z52 14.58 Birmingham Moor Street - Stratford-upon-Avon via Henley-in Arden, hauled by 31128 and 20205;
- 1Z22 16.00 Stratford-upon-Avon - Codsall via Dorridge, Birmingham New Street, Soho, Walsall (reverse), Bushbury Jn. Down Goods Loop (reverse) and the Oxley Chord, hauled by 50049 to Walsall and then from Bushbury Jn. DGL, and by 31128 and 20205 from Walsall to Bushbury Jn. DGL;
- 1Z53 18.53 Codsall - Bedford via Wolverhampton, Bescot Stadium, Aston, Birmingham New Street (reverse), Lichfield, Castle Donington and the Midland Main Line, hauled by 31128 and 20205 to Birmingham New Street, then by 50049;
- 1Z23 23.07 Bedford - Derby via the Midland Main Line hauled by 31128 and 20205.
The coaches were ex-Greater Anglia mark 3s, now owned by Nemesis Rail; they were reported as 11096, 10403, 12167, 12079, 12146 and 12061. This was, I think, their first outing in this livery with the grey and red additions to the Greater Anglia white, light and dark grey, and red doors (at least, I'd not seen any photos of this scheme before those of the empty stock move from Burton to Chaddesden Sidings the previous day).
Cossington was my first encounter with the tour (I'd not really fancied the very early start required to get a shot of the Derby to Bedford leg!), and I came here because I realised I'd be able to photograph the train approaching (albeit without the sun on the front) and going away - and it's a long time since a class 31 worked any sort of passenger train on the main line!
I then chased it to Burton-upon-Trent, intending to photograph it setting back into Wetmore yard, not appreciating it would run north on the goods line next to the yard - but there was almost wall-to-wall cloud when it did that move. I then photographed it as it set off on the next leg, from the road bridge at Branston, but, although the cloud had broken up and there was lots of blue sky around, the train was less than twenty seconds too early for the sun to have completely cleared one of the clouds (but the shot will probably razz up quite easily).
I'd not intended chasing the tour into the West Midlands, intending to go for 60095 on the sand from Middleton Towers and then head back east for 37425 and 37421 on 1Q86, but decided this tour was a less common event and ended up at Tyseley and Small Heath... In fact, my original plan had been to spend the day at the Mid-Norfolk Railway diesel gala - but there was some doubt in the weather forecast as to how quickly the cloud would clear in Norfolk, and it looked like it would be better here (and, anyway, I could cover the MNR gala on Monday).

After a seemingly never ending wait in bitterly conditions my perseverance paid off when West Coast Railways Class 57 diesel locomotive 57009 "G.J Churchward" finally appeared with Class 86 electric locomotive 86259 "Les Ross". With 86259 being under cover in one of the sheds its removal necessitated considerable shunting of stock by 57009 and 73114. Due to the cold weather I didn't wait for the duo to depart as 0Z57 to Lichfield Trent Valley low level.
An array of motive power can be seen in this panoramic view of Nemesis Rail. From left to right can be seen Class 08 diesel shunter 08575, Romic Class 43 HST powercar 43122, Class 73 diesel-electro locomotive 73114 behind which is 31128 and finally Class 57 diesel locomotive 57009 "G.J Churchward".

56040 "Oystermouth" leads 73114 through Congerstone with the 1715 Shackerstone - Shenton on 19th Sept 09.....despite its fine external condition and being a long term grid favourite for many,it only had a year or so left in preservation before being scrapped in favour of 56301......which isn't exactly doing much preservation activity now a days for the owning group......if you had worked on this loco at Dereham i don't suppose you would be best pleased..!

From the street level at Eccleston Bridge, I was able to peer down into the western platforms of Victoria Station, recording a scene that was lost to posterity soon afterwards when the site was redeveloped and this airy vista was replaced by the gloom of the Victoria Plaza shopping centre. Prominent in the view is electro-diesel 73 114 ready to haul a Gatwick Express train of Mark 2 coaching stock - a frequent service that British Rail had introduced in 1984. More mundane rolling stock is represented by a Sussex-bound 4-CIG unit (Class 423) while a suburban 4-EPB is also in view.

73114 in InterCity livery approaches Strood station with 7T64, the Tonbridge-East Peckham Tip-Hoo Junction engineers strip on 30th June 1994. The line to the left goes to Rochester and onwards to Faversham whilst the line over the bridge is the direct route to London via Swanley. The train would have carried spent ballast on leaving Tonbridge and then reversed into the tip siding at East Peckham. Once unloaded the next move would be empties to Hoo Junction and probably engine back to Tonbridge. 73114 was withdrawn in January 1999 and lukily making preservation. It spent some time on the Battliefield line at Shackerstone and currently with Nemesis Rail at Burton on Trent.

I normally steer clear of purchasing prints, however I came across a whole album of original Tonbridge shots. I collect old Tonbridge Slides / Negs so thought these were to good to let go, some very nice shots in there too. I will upload them all as and when I have time to scan them, probably around 50 in total. Unfortunately I can only assume the original negatives have since long been destroyed...
I hope they are of interest...

I have started to collect a number of original slides (with copyright) 'most' of which probably haven’t been seen before. Some come with image information and some don't. Please feel free to leave a comment if you know locations, dates, numbers etc, it would be much appreciated. I have uploaded these at a low resolution, please don't copy / download without my prior permission.
I only collect slides on the understanding that the full copyright transfers over to me. If you believe there to be a copyright issue please drop me an email.
73114 waits to leave Tonbridge Post Office with the 13:24 mail to Glasgow on 27 September 1996. This was the last day of operation for this train, Royal Mail deciding it would go by road in future. The purpose built platform still stands unused today over 20 years on.

Sat. 2nd June 1984 1Z38 - 'The Midland Executive' railtour
A rather excellent railtour that managed to include scheduled stops at Derby and Crewe for the two works open days :)
After arrival at Coventry, celebrity Class 40 pioneer D200 (40122) was removed from 1Z38 and is seen here returning to shed in the evening sunshine. 'Grid' 56031 took over the tour as far as Reading. What a fine looking locomotive :)

Watching Kira become more at ease over the course of the shoot was definitely affirming, and that's not really about the photos, or art, but about being able to put someone at ease, maybe/hopefully convincing them they are being portrayed well, that neither I nor the camera will do them a disservice.
The shots from that day are a representation of two people getting to know each other, and the comfort that familiarity brings.
And of course as I finish writing that sentence, look over at the picture and realize it's a harsh shot of Kira looking straight into the fucking sun, which she was only able to do for a fraction of a second until the pain of solar rays driving right into her eyeballs forced her to blink and look away.
BUT TRUST ME, SHE WAS TOTALLY DIGGING THE SHOOT BY THE END!
At Shackerstone station on the Battlefield line, 73114 has taken its position in readiness for the 15:45 departure to Shenton, as 56040 (with 56086 out of view) carefully take up their positions. 20th September 2009.

73.114 passes Sway.This was during the period when they were whipping the traction motors out of the REP's for re-use in the 442's.This left a bit of a short fall power wise hence the use of 73's on the Bomo trains,harking back to a time in 1967 when 73's could be seen doing a similar thing.

I will always judge the Polaroids I take now against the Polaroids I took back in what I consider My Prime.
Call it 2005-2008, when I was scoring Polaroid film for $5 a pack, shooting as much as I could carry, no idea how rare that film would one day become.
And that freedom allowed for experimentation, for play, for me to find my voice/style or, as me ol' mate Kevin Mason calls it, Visual Language.
And oh the Polaroids I took, back then. I look at 'em every day, what with 'em covering several walls of my apartment, the Polaroid Wall around 1100 strong. I look at 'em every day and find my more recent work wanting, which is unfair, I know.
Doesn't make sense to grade every Polaroid I take against the Best Polaroids I Have Ever Taken, but I do. Makes me hesitant, overly-cautious, conservative in my choice of composition.
But it also means on those rare days when I do find myself putting a newer shot on the wall, means I still got it. Maybe. Sometimes. Oh sometimes.
