With the current lack of any bus-related events going on, alternative entertainment is being provided by what some of us refer to as 'Rail Replacement Running Days'.

Searching through the SWR Planned Engineering Works list revealed that on 26/07/2020 Virginia Water would be the hub of activity by seeing Staines-Reading (fast & slow), Staines-Woking and Staines-Aldershot services all pass through on hourly services.

The Reading runs were each worked by a pair of double-deckers with single-deckers working alone on the other two services.

I caught the comings and goings at Virginia Water, Bracknell and Staines on a busy day for the camera.

I was on campus in downtown Toronto and had a few minutes before meeting a friend for coffee. I have used these decorative boulders as a background before. They are set in a pond during summer and a skating rink in the winter. I was interested in the light and the way a light snow had settled in the textures of this boulder and wanted to use it as a background; all I needed was a Stranger.

It didn’t take long before this attractive young Toronto Blue Jays fan appeared. As I approached her, she smiled and invited contact so I introduced myself and my project and she immediately said “Sure. I’d be glad to.” I explained that to realize my concept would involve a somewhat treacherous walk across the ice and I was concerned for her. She said “I’ll be careful and take full responsibility.” What a gem. We shook hands and started walking around the rink to a spot I had identified that involved the least risky footing. Meet Baillie.

Baillie is a Journalism student at the university and is originally from British Columbia. Her personality was as bright and cheerful as the images. When I checked about her age (19) and started to explain informed consent she said “No problem. I know about that from Journalism class." Baillie’s nature was happy and positive and I think her photo shows it. When she asked how I wanted her to pose, I asked her to hold the reflector and invited her to try a more reflective pose for variety since she had a natural smile in most poses. She obliged and I ended up choosing the smiling one because I felt that was her.

Baillie said she enjoyed helping me with my project and asked if I could help her with something. I said “Sure. What?” She explained her student job is as a server at a local sports bar and she’s been asked to hand out some promotional gift cards for a free order of chicken wings and she gave me four cards. I told her I was aware of the sports bar but assumed that as a couple of seniors my wife and I might be out of place. “Of course not!” she said. “We get everyone in there and you and your wife would love it.” I gladly accepted the cards and said I’d ask if my wife wants to try it out and would give the other two cards to my friend over coffee in a few minutes.

When I asked Baillie if she had any words of advice for the project photographers she thought for a moment and said “I guess it would be to just please yourself. Most people get caught up with trying to please other people and that doesn’t usually work out.” Good words. I said “Except where you work where your job is to please the customers.” She laughed and said “Right.” When I asked if she was facing any dilemmas just now she said she’s trying to decide whether to return to British Columbia and be with her family this summer or stay in Toronto.

Thank you Baillie for participating in 100 Strangers and for the fun meeting. I enjoyed it. You are #714 in Round 8 of my project. Good luck with your studies and with deciding where you will spend your summer.

This was last nights fireworks display in Ouray, Colorado. It was actually one of the lamest fireworks shows I have ever seen. Also the first time I have ever seen a fireworks display with no finale. The show just stopped, and everyone just stood there for about 20 minutes wondering... Is that it?

I'd like to thank the spectators for helping make this shot. The two fireworks on the left were actually sent up by the crowd of spectators. Thanks! They look better than the actual show.

This was shot standing on a rock, in the middle of a river.
