Withdrawn but still looking in good external condition. 71003 sits in the former steam shed roads at Stewarts Lane (73A) waiting her fate .
As I approached the end of my Plumbing/Gas Fitting Apprenticeship in August 1974 I started to get my own jobs to do.
At the end of April & beginning of May 1974 I was responsible for the disconnection of the gas & water supplies to the old goods shed at Farningham Road station in preparation for the sale and redevelopment of the site.
Here we see Class 71 No 71003 heading a mixed freight from London towards Dover.
A photo of a class 71 dual voltage electric is a rare feature in my railway collection. I recall this day. Mark and I were part way through a week long "All Line Railrover" which being 16 at the time was quite an adventure. Having made the two mile walk from the station to the back of Ashford Chart Leacon works I recall we were disappointed that this was all we saw for our efforts. Now of course I am pleased that we bothered with this trek. It seems that 71003 was due to attend the works open day on 19th August that year. This photo must have been taken just before or just after that event.
Here's a little background information that I have cribbed from my good pal Keith Long's Flickr upload taken during the open day.
Built at Doncaster Works and delivered as E5018 on 27th April 1960 she was renumbered E5003 in 1968 when the original E5003 was rebuilt as a Class 74, and 71003 with the TOPS renumbering, together with the rest of the class she was withdrawn in November 1977 and scrapped at her birthplace in March 1980.
Chart Leacon Open Day 19 August 1978. 71003 was new in 1960 as E5018, built at Doncaster Works for the Southern Region. These locos were equipped for working from overhead wiring in certain yards and sidings where 3rd rail was deemed to be unsuitable. They were known as "booster" locos because they were fitted with a flywheel which ensured that locos would not become 'gapped' where the third rai lwas not continuous. 71003 had been withdrawn in 1977.
The Newpowers are now applying their trade at Hoeford. Today is the first day for this one.

Seen during an open day 19th Aug 1978. This is a 126 neg from a kodak instamatic camera, so as you can see the quality is not the best, but still worth a scan. I was only 12 at the time..
Withdrawn electric loco 71003 at Chart Leacon during an Open Day. This loco was built at Doncaster Works as E5018 but renumbered to E5003 in 1968 after 10 class 71s had been converted to Class 74. This class of loco was built to run off 650V/750V DC third rail or overhead - overhead wiring was deemed the safe method of working in yards and sidings. I think that overhead was only installed on the old Eastern Section (later the South Eastern Division). There was also a flywheel arrangement for dealing with interruptions in the power supply or short sections of unelectrified track..

The only shot I managed to get of a Class 71 in BR days. 71003 at Ashford Chart Leacon on 2/9/78, taken on one of the NCTS 'Grand Southern' weekends. The loco' had been withdrawn approx' 10 months by this time.
All four Wright Streetdeck's converted to electric can be seen at First Solent Hoeford Depot, however, only this one can be seen with ease, awaiting livery additions before entering service.

The orange curtains behind the loco somehow remind me of the Swindon Class 120 DMU's that worked the Crewe - Lincoln services back in the 1970's.
Screwfix Live! returned to Farnborough today (26/09/2025) for another 3-day free-to-attend diy trade show extravaganza featuring over 200 brands and shed loads more. The annual event, first held in 2013, is big enough to justify a fleet of 7 First Bus car park shuttle buses based in Gosport. This year we have a pair of Streetlites, 3x GB Kites and, for the first time, a pair of double-deckers! The usual Routemaster catering bus was on hand and a bonus Vickery's Van Hool coach made it well worth the trip across town. These are some phone pics from the Friday.
British Railways York works 4-VEP class 423 750V DC 3rd rail four car electric multiple unit number 3122 (76654, 71003, 62323, 76653) of Wimbledon TMD arrives on platform 2 at Aldershot railway station forming the 12:36 (Daily) London Waterloo to Farnham. Monday 6th March 1989
Off the the end of platform 1 at the north-east end of Aldershot railway station stands Aldershot signal box. The London and South Western Railway type 4 design signal box open circa.1900 named Aldershot East signal box fitted with a 24 lever Stevens Tappet frame, replacing an 1870-built signal box on the opposite side of the line. The signal box was renamed Aldershot "A" on 15th September 1957 and was further renamed Aldershot on 3rd April 1977 after the closure of Aldershot "B" signal box. A switch (number 50) was installed on 23rd August 1970 to release Ground Frame "A" which replaced Aldershot Government Sidings signal box on the same day. Ground Frame "A" was decommissioned on 17th August 2009 and the individual function switch was converted to an emergency replacement switch for ASA526 signal. The signal box was refurbished with uPVC windows circa.2004. The signal box was officially closed on 27th August 2013 when signalling passed to Woking Area Signalling Centre
The train is passing beneath AS17 signal (platform 2 starting to up main) which is carried on a British Railways Southern Region bracket along with AS14 signal (platform 3 starting to up main).
In front of the signal box is AS22 (platform 1 starting) signal with WA528 signal, an automatic signal in the distance at the entrance to Aldershot tunnel. Both of which are four aspect colour light signals

This Iveco Daily curtain-sided van from Poland, was parked up on an industrial estate near Bremen. The van was registered to the city of Konin, located in central Poland. I've spotted vehicles from the surrounding county of Konin before, plenty of times, with the code 'PKN', but this was the first instance I could spot the 'PN' code.
