St Simons Island

Although I don't feel like apologizing for the vignetting in my one and only image of a Western Kingbird, I think that an explanation is in order. For seven years, I tried to capture this endemic grassland/prairie/rangeland bird. Instead, I (and Doris) got a vagrant Tropical Kingbird three years before this. He's spot on focus-wise, but why it placed a vignette - or put another way - why it blurred the composition as though I was in our darkroom again (1950) and purposively dodged the image.

Well, I'm in its range and he was in mine, and there was no way this would be relegated to the archives. Hundreds of dragons, yes. A "collection" of two kingbirds will have to stand on their own four feet!

This edge-on spiral galaxy is located in the southern constellation of Indus. It is about 31 million light years from us, and was first observed by John Herschel on the 4th of October 1834.

It has an apparent magnitude of 10.51 and an angular extent of 8.15 X 1.63 arcmin. I love looking for all the other objects far off in the distance. The halo reminds me of a fish with the tail at the base flaring out, and the head at the top.
