The expansion of electrified services in the DDR resulted in an order for 37 of these 1883 (DB Class 7083) catenary work cars which were an upgraded version of the original 188 class. They were built between 1987 & 1991. The interior contains a lounge, a workshop area and a toilet beside the driving compartments. On the roof a work platform, an observation stand and a headlight are installed. It is powered by a 6 cylinder diesel rated at 330 kW, 442 hp driving a single axle in one of the 4-wheeled trucks by means of a hydraulic transmission and is capable of speeds to 100 km/h, 62 mph.

Am 26.04.10 passiert der DB Netz Instandhaltung 708 337-1 den Dormagener Rangierbahnhof in Fahrtrichtung Neuss. Der Oberleitungsrevisionstriebwagen wird zur Wartung und Reparatur von Oberleitungen genutzt.
