NGC 7023 (sometimes known as the Iris Nebula or with the abbreviation C 4) is a diffuse nebula visible in the boreal constellation of Cepheus. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1794.

NGC 7023 is a reflection nebula, ie it reflects the light of some nearby stars; probably the main star responsible for its illumination is precisely the seventh magnitude star, cataloged as HD 200775, which would be enveloped by the nebula, together with other less bright stars born from its dust and which form the open cluster. The nebula is probably about 1400 light years from us and measures about 6 al. It is probably part of the vast Cepheus Molecular Cloud Complex.

NGC 7023 better known as the Iris Nebula, is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. The NGC 7023 designation is technically the open cluster in the triangular open area to the lower left of the bright blue area, which is actually LBN 487. The nebula is surrounded by lots of dark clouds of dust and molecular gas.

From my night out on the town at Joshua Tree NP, this is one of the composites garnered from the evening. I'm not particularly excited about what this northerly direction captured, though I do like the northern end of the Milky Way. In fact, I was a bit torn whether to crop off the left more and dump that low left meteor, just to tighten up the space closer to the rest of the action. Note the really wide angle too. It feels to me a little like that warning on the auto's passenger side rear view mirror, about "objects are closer than they appear". (I shot also with the 24mm.) All in all, a beautiful night. I'd do it again, with some modifications.

Just for fun, one of the frames actually had 2 meteors in it, low just over the rocks. I marked 'em with notes. Also, far low right is, I believe, the Pleiades - from Wikipedia: "It is among the star clusters nearest to Earth, it is the nearest Messier object to Earth, and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky." I think, and I will welcome correction.

Any comments and favs are very much appreciated

Passing the church camp

I've seen many of the SD9043s pass through Dubuque, but this was the first time I was able to see one after the conversion leading through Dubuque, IA. This is B39 heading to the CP yard across the CN/CP Joint Main.

CP 7023 sits on a spur near Barlow on the CP Brooks Subdivision. The unit was spotted here earlier for a traction motors replacement. I elected to come back after dark for a few night shots.

As I haven't managed a completed colour image since May, here is a re-process of some old data from August 2014. Looking back I was quite short on the RGB which made quite a bit of colour noise to deal with in the dusty areas of the nebula.

Around 8 hours in LRGB subs captured with an Altair Astro 6" RC and Atik 460ex.
