Kochel am See, Duitsland
In the far south of Germany (on our way to the first hotel in the Italian Dolomites) the navigation suddenly took an exit from the highway and the route took us through a beautiful green landscape and along some wonderful lakes. At the Kochelsee we decided to take a break. Pretty nice place right?

On our way to the first hotel (Niederdorf, Italy) during our road trip last month, Waze (the navigation app) suddenly chose an alternative route in the south of Germany. And I don't say it quickly, but this region in Germany is wonderful. The route led us through cute villages and along beautiful lakes. This picture was taken in Kochel am See, where we made a short stop.

We must never forget why we have, and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have "guardians at the gate."

On 6th September, 1939, a technical fault at the RDF station at Canewdon, compounded by a series of mistakes within RAF Fighter Command's fighter control system, led to friendly aircraft being plotted as an incoming raid. No. 56 Squadron (Hawker Hurricanes) were scrambled to intercept this 'phantom' raid, only to be plotted as hostile in their turn. Further squadrons were now scrambled and, tragically, a section of 72 Squadron (Supermarine Spitfires) misidentified two Hurricanes of 56 Squadron as Messerschmitt Bf 109's and shot both of them down, one pilot (Pilot Officer M. L. Hulton-Harrop) being killed. 'The Battle of Barking Creek', as the events of 6th September were later to become known, led to a wholesale review of RAF Fighter Command's plotting system.

I called in at my parents' house after work – my first trip there (just outside London) not involving a car! I'd been expecting to have to pay an eye-watering £2.40 for the three-minute journey to Swanley afterwards on Arriva's 477 bus, but then discovered Griffin Bus's rival 409 service, which only operates at certain times but costs just 70p!
Entertainingly, the service is also operated using a rather ancient bus - older than even the rail replacement services I've occasionally travelled on. The photo shows the top deck; the lower deck had still further varieties of seat cover :) There's also a sign on the driver's cab: "This bus is called Vicky. Please treat her nicely."
Also, as I was the only passenger, the driver dropped me exactly where I wanted to rejoin the TfL bus network, rather than taking me all the way to Swanley station. Excellent service!

(Originally buried in the Azmac Dere Cemetery, Row 2, Grave 3)
The Derbyshire Yeomanry War History 1914-1919
Sergeant Holden, one of our most popular N.C.O.'s, was killed by a shell whilst in the act of issuing rations to his men. Curious to say, though he was kneeling at the time, surrounded by men standing, not another man was touched.
This N.C.O. was buried close to where he fell, and as a rough cross was being placed over the grave the Turks fired a single round of shrapnel, which burst low, besprinkled the grave, but without touching the two officers and two N.C.O.'s who were standing at its side

MOMENT ON CHOCOLATE HILL
6SEPTEMBER 1915
SUVLA Bay,
A scene of peace
And beauty
Masking the stark
Obscenities
Of War.
On Chocolate Hill
Where bouts of ribald humour
Deny grim truths
The mind cannot endure;
A sergeant
Issues rations
In the trenches.
Sharing
The hollow jokes
That stifle fear,
And sharing
Silently
The thoughts unspoken
In each man's heart
Of home and those held dear.
He would not hear
The earth explode
Beside him.
That day in Suvla Bay
On Chocolate Hill.
