These aren't just any wild California Poppies. These are MY poppies. It went like this: I work part time at one of the county regional parks, and I got permission to try an experiment. The big shop equipment area was rough and wild, so I hoped to clean up a good patch in front of the building and sow in some seeds of my favorite wildflower, the California Poppy. My own poppies at home begin to bloom in mid February, so I started the seeded patch at work in January. Even though this place is only 20 miles from home, there's a big difference in weather - it's in the mountain pass and the weather is more harsh and extreme, not to mention the winds that come down the pass. So it was a gamble. By April, I began to lose hope. Then a few teeny plants began to show up. My enthusiasm returned and I started pulling out the undesirable intruders. In the last couple of weeks, I've cleaned it up so mostly just poppies remain, and some are standing tall, with lots of additional support still coming in. It's not gonna rate with my mature yard or the California Poppy Preserve around Lancaster, but it's really super cool. It's a whole sprinkling of just poppies across the front of the shop area, clean and downright delightful. They may or may not return in force or at all next year, but I'm hoping it will be the start of something grand.
