Bluegrass band “Never Come Down” Performing at Pine Fest Music Festival in Halfway Oregon
A spectacular Saturday on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway for day Pine Fest - Halfway, Oregon with bluegrass band “Never Come Down”.
Billed as the tiniest music festival in the tiniest town, Pine fest is one of our favorite fall events along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. We had a great day hanging out with locals and visitors from Oregon Idaho and Washington listening to a great line up of bands and musicians from throughout the Northwest at the Baker County Fairgrounds in Halfway.
Pine Fest is the largest musical festival in Halfway but the community also hosts a number of other musical events including the summer concert series on the Main Street Stage. For more information about Pine Fest including next year’s dates and performers visit www.pinefest.org
The town of Halfway is just one of numerous small towns along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, a loop that encircles the Wallowa Mountains, intersecting with Interstate 84 at Baker City and La Grande, and communities all along the byway host a variety of festivals and community events throughout the year providing visitors a chance to celebrate local culture and visit with locals while exploring this incredibly scenic region of North East Oregon.
The byway is a popular destination for group tours and offers visitors a chance to experience small town Americana in small towns like Halfway, as they explore the rugged and spectacular Northeast Oregon landscape along the way.
The entire route is on a paved highway. Plan ahead - you'll find stretches of more than eighty miles without gas and with few services. A segment of the Byway between Joseph and Halfway closes with snow in winter, but allows access to winter recreation areas, offering a whole other kind of Northeast Oregon Adventure.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: One of my Sun Jewel Shani dolls has worn this skirt since 2012....around thirteen years as I'm typing this! When I rescued her from a large outdoor flea market on Father's Day that year, she was sporting just her bikini top. It's a super beautiful piece, embellished with over sized fake crystals. Naturally, my sister and I wanted to try to find bottoms to match the swimsuit top. That way Shani could still sport her iconic bikini top. This was the perfect piece to pair with the top. It's orange, but a lighter shade. The bold print also surprisingly works well with the plain top. I've had this piece since I was a kid...it originated from one of those various flea market lots we got in the early 2000s. I assumed when I began identifying my childhood dolly wardrobe, that this was from a fashion gift set of sorts. I was shocked to learn it was marketed alongside the Splash 'n Color Barbie line! It really doesn't remind me of those dolls at all.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: The Sun Jewel line will always reign as one of the most iconic collections of all time to Colleen and me. Why? Well my first store bought Barbie EVER was Sun Jewel Kira, and Barbie was one of Colleen's earliest dolls too. As kids, we were obsessed with beach themed Barbies, and maybe that had a lot to do with the fact that Kira and Sun Jewel Barbie were some of our oldest dollies. Nevertheless, as adults, we still felt something deep for this line. So it only seemed natural that we wanted to add more dolls from the Sun Jewel series to our collection. We actually had decent luck with this mission the first few years we embarked on our doll collecting journey. Miss Shani, on the right side of the photo, was one of the earliest acquisitions. And I think of all the Sun Jewel dolls I own that I got as an adult, she might be the most special. While I find Teresa to be more beautiful, and I was so excited to get a boxed Kira doll to open once again, Shani has a very special place in my heart. It was Father's Day 2012...several weeks after Dad passed away. His best friend, Jimmy, offered to take Colleen and me to this HUGE outdoor flea market. We had never been to this one before--since it was a drive in movie theater at night, the space was expansive. We literally spent all day at this flea market, and we came home with oodles of goodies. If I'm not mistaken, Shani was the first thing we found, along with one of Colleen's Pizza Party! Courtney dolls. They were in a small white box on the ground, along with a handful of other dolls. I remember that the woman who was selling them offered to sell us all the dolls, but since we were still so new to collecting, we opted to only pick a few. I also got my All American Teresa from this same person. Both Shani and Teresa had evidence of rodent damage. Teresa was missing a chip on her nose, and you can kind of see that Shani has scratches and chips on her face too. I recall that some other doll was wearing Shani's bikini top, and that she was dressed in a red outfit from a 90s fashion gift set. I think I asked the seller if I could redress the dolls, which is how I ended up with Shani's top. Anyways, later that day, we also found Asha (the original one). Who knew that after years of never seeing any dolls from the Shani line, that we'd find TWO in one day?!!! It was very exciting, especially for someone like me, who has always loved specifically collecting African American dolls. Sun Jewel might be my favorite Shani doll ever made, simply because I'm so obsessed with this line. This girl in particular will always mean the world to me--I'll never forget that day treasure hunting with Jimmy, and the excitement we felt finding such an iconic doll.
Obviously our first Shani was not in the best shape. So it was hard for Colleen to pass up the opportunity to get one boxed. The lady on the left was purchased in 2018 at the local flea market. She was still sealed in her package, and only cost $5. Ironically, Colleen says that just a few weeks before, she was bemusing the fact that we still didn't have Shani's whole outfit, and that she would love it if we got a boxed one (especially since one day we hope to have the whole set, so we can take a line photo of them for Flickr). I wasn't too keen on the idea, only because I was trying to be frugal with my money, and we were only missing my first Shani doll's bottoms. But I'm really glad Colleen talked me into buying her, because it definitely would have been something I regretted. Both of my dolls are absolutely stunning. My first has much nicer hair (probably because she's been boil washed more), but my second has the more attractive face in my opinion. Both are treasured members of our dolly family, and I'm so grateful to have them!
