Marshall Point Light Station is a lighthouse at the entrance of Port Clyde Harbor in Port Clyde, Maine. The light station was established in 1832. The original tower was replaced with the present lighthouse in 1857. The lighthouse is a 31-foot-tall (9.4 m) white brick tower on a granite foundation. The tower was originally lit with a fifth-order Fresnel lens. A raised wooden walkway connects the tower to land. The lighthouse was automated in 1980 and the original Fresnel lens was replaced with a modern 12-inch (300 mm) optic.

The light station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The lighthouse also appeared in the 1994 film Forrest Gump.

I had some trouble falling asleep last night after the stunning events of the day. Overwhelming gratitude (and not just for the camera, I'm sure you understand) has an adrenaline-like effect on me, it seems. Eventually, I managed to fluff up a quiet corner of cloud nine, bury my face in it, and drift off.

But all of that gratitude had to go somewhere. So today, I sat down and wrote letters and cards to some of my best people.

The original Montpelier was built in 1795 as a retirement estate for Major General Henry Knox and his family. Knox had served as Chief of Artillery during the Revolutionary War and then as the nation’s first Secretary of War, when he retired to Maine to develop his land claim known as the Waldo Patent.

Designed by Ebenezer Dunton, the Federal style building is dominated by the axis-on-oval symmetry and dramatic semi-flying staircase in the hall. Knox’s daughter, Lucy Thatcher, was the last family member to occupy the house and after her death in 1854 the building fell into disrepair and was eventually razed in 1871.

In 1929 that the Knox Memorial Association reconstructed Montpelier, creating the museum that stands today. The Montpelier Museum is now home to many of the objects that Knox kept in the original mansion

The lime industry was one of Thomaston’s first industries, the first quarry being opened on a former prison site in 1734. Warren Ackerman began work on May 3, 1927, on 23 mostly swampy acres. Fourteen distinct buildings, including the main office, were erected in 21 days. Two kilns with two 225 foot stacks were built. These were used by local fishermen at sea as navigational aids.

Limestone, from which much of cement is made, was laid down in marine layers 400 million years ago. Not all limestone is good for making cement; it must have the proper chemical qualities of which only three areas in Maine provided — Thomaston being the best.

Dragon Products, which is a subsidiary of the Mexican-owned company, Elementia, manufactures Portland cement, using limestone mined from local quarries. Dragon currently employs 85-88 workers at the Thomaston plant, and still actively mines its 130-open acre quarry.

In making Portland Cement, rock is blasted from a quarry, some up to piano size, and reduced to small particles in rolling grinding mills. This material is mixed with water to form a slurry which is pumped into the higher end of a revolving kiln, a long, horizontal tube, heated to a semi-liquid at 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. At the lower end of the kiln, this hot mass exists as clinker. This is ground in revolving balls milled to such fineness that 90 percent of it will pass through a sieve. The cement is now ready to be pumped into silos where it will await packaging in paper bags or loading in bulk into rail cars and trucks.

St. George. ME

The legend of Saint George and the Dragon tells of Saint George (died in 303) taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices. The story goes that the dragon originally extorted tribute from villagers. When they ran out of livestock and trinkets for the dragon, they started giving up a human tribute once a year. This was acceptable to the villagers until a princess was chosen as the next offering. The saint thereupon rescues the princess chosen as the next offering.
