Another visit out east today and this was the target. 66142 with 6C75 1055 Immingham to Scunthorpe passing the Line works at Melton Ross. 31st January 2022.
Pretty much perfect conditions at Garsdale troughs for the passage of 66142 with 6E97, the 10.44 Newbiggin - Tees Dock gypsum empties.
Fri 16th April 2021.
66142 "Maritime Intermodal Three" grapples the 1 in 75 incline towards Shap Summit with a healthy container load on the 4S38 14.16 Seaforth-Mossend, passing Salterwath Farm. The lorries on the M6 motorway behind made easier work of the incline. On the other hand the shed was slogging it at crawling pace and, as is clearly visible, producing a fair bit of clag.
It's also worth noting this working was delayed by 65 minutes, which had a positive impact on the sun angle by the time it finally reached me; the late-running a consequence of the earlier inbound service arriving at the Liverpool terminal three hours late.
Taken with the assistance of a pole.
With snow on the upper slopes of Whernside, it's a raw wintry day up here in the Yorkshire Dales - but at least the sun is shining, if intermittently.
In this, another unused shot from the archives, DB Cargo 'Shed' 66142 rounds the corner towards Ribblehead station with the 10.44am Newbiggin British Gypsum - Milford West Sidings discharged gypsum JRA wagons (6E95).
The station, just a stone's throw away from the famous viaduct, was built by the Midland Railway and opened in 1886 as Batty Green. For some reason that name didn't stick and, just 5 months later, the station was changed to Ribblehead.
Closed in 1970 when the prospects for the Settle & Carlisle line as a whole looked distinctly bleak, it was reopened again in 1986 and would eventually be leased to the Settle & Carlisle Railway Trust who undertook a complete restoration and refurbishment, before reopening it with a visitor shop, resident caretaker, and holiday accommodation. Today (2025) the station is served by Northern Rail services running between Leeds and Carlisle, with a train in each direction roughly every 1½ - 2½ hours.
The two railwaymen in hi-vis clothing are waiting for a light engine to arrive and collect the loaded aggregate wagons from the virtual-quarry railhead behind me. I couldn't resist framing the image around what look to be the original MR gas lamps - nice touches, even if they are no longer operational.
Looks best full-screen. Comments off for this one, thanks.

6M37 Cardiff - Burton steel coils in Cargowagons, a welcome Sunday move. Seen here at Lea Marston, in milky late afternoon sun. Wildlife report, hardly wildlife but as the service was well early at Landor and then held to time I had a few minutes to pass so collected sloes for my winter gin fix.
After being somewhat disappointed to have missed this loco working a rare early morning engineers train north over the line on the previous Sunday, it was nice to catch Maritime liveried 66142 on the gypsum. The blue shed is seen passing Angerholme working 6E97 Newbiggin - Tees Dock.
