During the Victorian era Penarth in South Wales was a popular holiday destination which was promoted nationally as "The Garden by the Sea". Today the town, with its traditional seafront, continues to be a regular summer holiday destination though predominantly for older visitors.The town has a substantial retired population but Penarth is now principally a dormitory town for Cardiff commuters.
