When I first really noticed dragonflies around 2005, it was because of one large bright red (really orange) one that seemed to rule the swamp. They would fly at great speeds (well, up to 35 mph) patrolling their overlapping territories which covered two-thirds of the lake.
For awhile it seemed I was taking photos of Flame Skimmers to the exclusion of every other species (until competition from Widow Skimmers), but their numbers were only part of the reason. The other was that they perched perfectly on blades of water grasses, at the very end of a branch, or atop my favorite, the Horsetail Grass which has a matching evolutionary period of 330 million years! If that doesn't gain your interest, well, then I'll just count myself lucky enough to discovered them in the first part of the digital age.
Taken in North Yorkshire.
Will have to return with better lighting conditions.

Dat is nou leuk. Vind je achterin een kast een envelopje met foto's die je ooit ingestuurd hebt naar de redactie van Spoor & Trein.
Deze foto is op 12 oktober 2001 aan de Industrieweg in Deventer. De trein zal doorrijden richting de Hanzeweg en daarna geduwd de Kamperstraat in rijden naar de overslag.
Het betreft loc 6485 van toen nog NS die de Essent Milieu VAM-wagens aan de haak heeft. Op dit stukje stonden overigens vaak verkeerd geparkeerde vrachtwagens zodat het tijd kostte om de vaak buitenlandse chauffeurs te zoeken die dan hun vrachtwagen moesten verplaatsen.
Dat is nou leuk. Vind je achterin een kast een envelopje met foto's die je ooit ingestuurd hebt naar de redactie van Spoor & Trein.
Deze foto is op 12 oktober 2001 gemaakt aan de Kamperstraat in Deventer. Loc 6485 duwt of trekt volle of lege ACTS-wagons van Essen Milieu het laatste stukje naar de VAM-overslag. 2 jaar later zou alles gesloten en later gesaneerd worden en resten er nog een paar stukjes spoor ter herinnering.
Ik snap na het zien van deze foto wel waarom je niet vaak kiekjes ziet van deze locatie. Schaduw van hoge gebouwen, kromstaande lantaarnpalen, verkeerde zonstand, allemaal aanwezig, maar daar was ik in 2001 totaal niet mee bezig.
Volgens mij reed de trein hier geduwd naar de overslag, op de terugweg werd dan een spoorkruising overgestoken waarna kop gemaakt werd aan de Hanzeweg om vervolgens weer terug te keren naar de Industrieweg.
Wel leuk om te zien dat in deze tijd de transitie naar de nieuwe kentekens plaats vond (dat blauw EU-sysmbooltje aan de linkerkant). De Seat Cordoba links heeft nog geen nieuw kenteken de Peugeot 205 (grijs kenteken) aan de rechterkant wel.
A place to escape and away from the TV. A split AC device was installed and that sure has helped in being able to sit in the patio and watch the birds at the feeders.
These guys ran in front of us in the woods next to Curbar in Derbyshire. I almost didn't bring my longer lens so was very lucky to get this. They stood together for a few minutes and this was the best I could manage.
Not one of my most technically brilliant photos but happy with it nevertheless. It does make we want to spend some money on a longer prime lens and really get onto nature photography a bit more.

Parasitised by Shinning Cuckoo, so nests early in spring to avoid the visiting Cuckoo's who get their opportunity with the second round of nesting around November onwards....
I suppose evolutioniusts would say they evolved this practice, the Cuckoo's just having to wait for this event....LOL
