As she was leaving, this Great Grey Owl flew almost directly over top of me. Amazing how silent and effortlessly they fly!

I had to visit my archives to find a wintry image this year! We passed this red quilt barn (Ashe County, NC...quilt pattern is "Delectable Mountains") on a trip to enjoy a "snow day" in the NC mountains several years ago. Merry Christmas to all of you and your families!

If you're going to have a little picnic or lunch at Coulter Bay (by Oxbow Bend) expect some friendly marauding by gray jays. We even had a gray jay take part of a sandwich out of our hands, but they're such charming clowns - perhaps the most fun of any jays - that not only did I forgive them, I welcomed the opportunity to get one good shot after running all over Coulter Bay, and I mean "all over." That's four years ago. I doubt if I can keep up, so the plan this year is to let them come to me.
In his beak, that is one of many grapes he stole from our plates, foregoing Fritos and potato chips. Nice to know they take care of their health.
