Cromford Canal. Designed by William Jessop and Benjamin Outram and opened in 1794, the canal was a success, until road and rail took most of the trade. It was partially closed in 1900 and abandoned in 1944. The Cromford Canal Society restored and reopened about a third of the route in 1989, but after they ceased to exist, the canal again became derelict. A shorter section was restored from Cromford by The Friends of Cromford Canal, and from 2013 reopened, it is now listed as a Biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve. Opened in the early C19th, the Leawood Pumphouse (sometime High Peak Pumphouse) contains a fully restored steam pump, and is grade 2* listed.
