Returning back north to the SCFE Sebring Subdivision after the quick detour to Southern Garden Citrus, James, Richard and I would once again re-group with Mr. Scott Ogle and Mr. Chris Starnes at Liberty Point where another photoshoot was well underway. Prior to our delayed arrival, Mr. Starnes had SCFE Work Train 1-15 position itself on the easternmost end of the super-elevated curve in the midst of the unharvested sugarcane fields to capture still photographs of the consist. The scene was set to document what could be argued as *the* quintessential U.S. Sugar shot, the perfect angle to showcase the railroad’s new motive power in company promotional material.
Having the train stopped made it vastly easier for Chris and James to launch their drones high up to capture some magnificent aerial angles of the fresh green SD40’s, averting the challenge of photographing a moving subject. Richard and I shot from ground level while Mr. Ogle supervised and relayed communications between us photographers and the Work Train 1-15 crew. We’d spend the better part of half an hour photographing our train at Liberty Point, making good usage of our limited time available occupying the block—it was still harvest season after all, and that raw cane can’t get held up for too long.
Shortly before 14:30, Work Train 1-15 would shove backwards towards East Liberty Point, followed up with a track speed run-by through Liberty Point curve with the highball back east towards Clewiston for one last chance to capture footage at the location. #USSC6322 and #USSC6321 were the Hollywood stars of Florida’s sugarland that afternoon, hauling their train of matching covered hoppers and tank cars through the sweeping curves back to town, making a whole lot of EMD [and Nathan NC P3] noises. Only one more planned photo spot remained unchecked on Mr. Starnes list before the end of our private photo session: the Clewiston Wye.

BN 6321 leads a skittles lashup on Conrail train PRPI at Aley Hill Road in Big Beaver, PA on 1/30/1994. Units are from BN, CR, CSX, & UP.

It seems like this sharp blue SD40, now called an SD40-2, has been avoiding me for an eternity, at least since it came to the Chesapeake & Indiana. it was becoming my White Whale, but I finally found it today just south of Union Mills. It sat in high sun, but my camera seemed to handle the situation very well. TGFD, or thank God for digital. The 6321 started life on the L&N as an SD40, then went through the pains of merger mania, passing from the Seaboard System to CSX, becoming an SD40-2 somewhere along the way, then retirement, finally leased to the CKIN, through the Indiana Box Car company, or IBCX. I don't care what they call her; next goal is to catch her in action.
