Port Au Choix is about half way up the Viking Trail on the north eastern peninsula of Newfoundland. It’s home to a small herd of Caribou, usually seen around the lighthouse, but often in town as well.

Ice covering a plant at the Runge Nature Center in Jefferson City Missouri. We had a total of between 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch of ice between 12/9/07 and 12/11/07.

Indigo Macaw, Lear's Macaw, Arara-azul-de-lear, Anodorhynchus leari, 75 cm / 29.5 in. RARE, ENDANGERED and on the verge of EXTINCTION. Caatinga (dry, desert-like) with palms. Note that the yellow lappet at the base of the bill is larger on the bottom parrot. This is caused by the open bill, which stretches the skin a bit.

We were lucky to observe ~160 birds flying around us before sunrise and for a couple hours as the sun rose. They were flying up and down the red sandstone canyon.

There were nest and roosting cavities in the cliffs that their activities were centered around.

Conservation efforts are in place for restoring their primary diet source - nuts from Licuri Palms, Syagrus coronata. Planted groves are fenced to protect them from cattle grazing.

Max knows it is his time to play with the ball outside. However at a 1 degree F wind chill I don't think we will be playing much outside. I made a few pictures this morning and that maybe all I do outside but give the birds some more feed.

Single daffodil. Conservatory, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. 11 April 2023

There are some moments, good and bad, that are forever stuck in your memory. Such was the case on the morning of January 29, 1994. Trudy and I headed out from our apartment in Beaver Falls and were driving up to CP WOOD. Suddenly TV-1 could be heard calling out on the scanner, emergency, emergency, emergency. The dispatcher answered and the engineer reported that as they were coming through New Brighton a person ran up to the tracks right in front of them and laid their head on the rail, committing suicide. We drove down to New Brighton and found the head end of TV-1 stopped on the Beaver River Bridge. The conductor was walking back to make a cut where the body lay. The railroad sent a new crew to relieve the unfortunate crew that had to deal with the fatality. The crew change is seen here in Beaver Falls, with the power and cut of cars, with the rest of the train still down in New Brighton. Once the scene was cleared, the new crew put the train back together and continued West.
