In 2013 Greater Manchester Police produced a series of ‘60 Second Security’ videos each offering simple security advice in bite-sized chunks.

Designed to provide easy step by step tips, including advice on products and how to install and use them, helping to make you and your property that little bit safer.

The four videos, created on subjects such as light timers and purse bells, have so far received over 10,000 hits on GMPTV, the Force’s YouTube channel and have been utilised across the UK by Police Forces, NHS, companies, organisations, Neighbourhood and Home Watch and the voluntary sector to name but a few.

Building on this success, a second series of films is about to be released and focuses on personal attack alarms, shed alarms, bogus callers and door chimes.

The current videos can be viewed on YouTube and via the dedicated GMP webpage where they can all be found in one place - www.gmp.police.uk/60secondsecurity

Whilst the risk posed by strangers is rare, it’s really important to make children aware of simple tips they can follow to keep themselves a little safer.

This video on Stranger Danger is designed to highlight a few key points, to be used to help you have that important conversation with your child, pupil or class. It is aimed at aged 4 - 11 years.

It has been produced for parents, carers, families, teachers, schools and centres to use with young people to raise awareness and generate discussion that helps children keep safe.

We would advise you to talk about who your safe adults are and where there are safe places near you if help is needed.

It’s also important to think about safety on the internet and use of mobile phone apps and games that have ‘chat’ functions as this can be just as dangerous as a stranger in the street.

Courier fraud is where someone phones you and tries to get your card details & pin number claiming to be from the police or your bank, investigating a crime. They may ask you to hang up and ring your bank, but the criminal doesn’t hang up! This effectively blocks the line making you think you’re speaking to your bank! They then send someone to your address to collect your card, which can then be used to take money from your account.

Watch the video to see more about this fraud; it may help you or someone you know avoid becoming a victim….

The most commonly stolen property during a burglary is cash, jewellery, credit cards and sometimes the spare car keys (and then the car), the very sort of property that can be kept in a safe!

You should call 101, the new national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.

Always call 999 in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or where there is danger to life.

You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

In the last few months Greater Manchester Police has produced a series of short crime prevention videos entitled 60Second Security.

The videos, presented by PC Chris Hayden, feature simple security tips and also advice on products - with step by step guides on how to install and use them.

The aim is to help make you and your property that little bit safer in a few seconds.

They have covered a wide range of subjects from bogus callers and courier fraud to shed security and personal attack alarms.

The next video – to be released on Saturday, 10 May, 2014 – looks at the advantages of having a safe in the home.

Most householders keep their valuables such as jewellery, cash, important papers and spare car keys, in the house.

Do YOU have family jewellery hidden at home? Would you be devastated if it were stolen?

Look out for this and other upcoming #sixtysecondsecurity productions.

Coming Soon….Hot off the press!

Greater Manchester Police have already created 8 films with series 1 and 2 of #60SecondSecurity which are videos all around simple security advice. Currently with 40k hits on Youtube and Flickr.

Designed to provide easy step by step tips, including advice on products and how to install and use them, helping to make you and your property that little bit safer.

Series 3 will be coming out in May 2014 but in the mean time we have created a special one off episode due to an increasing and very concerning crime called ‘Courier Fraud’.

Courier fraud is where someone phones you and tries to get your card details & pin number claiming to be from the police or your bank, investigating a crime. During the call they will try and make it seem genuine by asking you to hang up and ring your bank, but this is a trick.

Your card will be collected and then be used to empty your bank account.

To report fraud call police on 101 (999 if it’s an emergency), Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or report it online at www.actionfraud.police.uk
